  • These new bi-mode expresses certainly take off well (and quietly), even if their top speed on diesel is a bit "so so".
This is Port Talbot Parkway 18/10/2017. In Coach B (powered) on the 17:29 from Swansea.

The IEPs act like a tube train when accelerating

The class 800's are capable of 125mph on diesel power; so the top speed on diesel is not "so so". The only problem is the time required to get to 125mph on diesel power.

Isaac O 125mph is only possible on the downhill, with the wind behind it. It's not really a regular possibility (as on the HST). They were designed as 100mph for diesel, but obviously had to be able to do over that for the oversees requirement. It so happened that the design was good enough to push 125 on a good day. On diesel, they turned out to be basically 110mph units that can over perform. I know this as I have some political links and also some links into the IET testing and training program. I also travel on them regularly and really like them as 110 mph diesel / 125mph electric, they are awesome.
