Yesterday I saw a new ridgeline with lumber racks and tool boxes. Was a bit of a strange look, but the guy was totally using it as his work truck, which was kind of cool.
I had an electrician at my house once that worked out of an old Odyssey. He'd gutted the back out and installed plywood up the sides and shelves on that. You can make a work vehicle out of anything, ha!
I do tile installation and renovations I use a first Gen as my vehicle.
No surprise really, it has the best in class (mid size) payload of 1580 lbs. In context, the original definition of a half ton truck is that it can carry a half ton in the bed (it has morphed since). By the original definition the Ridgeline would qualify as a half ton. Some half tons still max out at 900-1000 lbs in the bed.
I was just revisiting this video after watching the 2020 RAM ECO Diesel Towing MPG Test...so I thought I'd mostly copy and past my comments from that video since we have now owned the 2017 Ridgeline for 3 years now.
So again to repeat...First let me say I love you guys and your channel...I tell all kinds of people about y'all! :-)
Second, let me preface...I've personally owned 10 Trucks/SUVs in my 50 years, where we pulled a 4,000 lb. Malibu Echelon or Malibu Response LX on a Tandem sold tube Ryan Trailer. I have always hand calculated the MPGs after every fill-up of every vehicle we've ever owned (car, truck, SUV), and if they were pulling or not. Below are the vehicles we've owned that have pulled that 4,000 lb. setup...and they are listed sequentially in the order we'd purchased them. Plus, I listed the Average MPG's we'd get going down the highway, or pulling.
My point is this...when we had our '97 Cummins Turbo Diesel...Diesel Fuel cost WAY less than Gas. So I had it all figured out on a spreadsheet...so with the extra cost of the Cummins Diesel Engine...its break even point would be 77,000 miles. However, what my spreadsheet could NOT tell me...was how "cheap" the Cummins felt to operate with its 36 Gallon Tank that would go 800+ miles without fail with an empty truck. Soooo compared to our 454 Suburban that averaged 9.4 MPG (just carrying itself around with a 42 Gallon tank) where a person could literally watch the fuel gauge go down. The Cummins "felt cheap" to operate (well it did until the transmission gave out at 37,000 miles which made me afraid about how the rest of the truck was built in comparison to the awesome Cummins). ;-)
Plus, I will also note that at the time we bought our 1997 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel, my good friend was the Cummins Mechanic at the Dodge Dealership, so he had done the "110%" Tune that was possible back before all the computers. AND, also at the time, Diesel Fuel cost WAY less...AND a person did NOT have to add the Blue DEF (which a quick search online says that a person needs 1 Gallon of DEF [about $6.50 per/Gal.] or [$4.57 per/Gal in 55 Gal DEF Drum] for Every 50 Gallons of Diesel Fuel.
So many things come to mind...so where is a normal person expected to store a 55 Gal Drum? So, if it was me, I'd be buying 2.5 Gals...but anyway...so that means that not only does the Diesel Engine Option Cost WAY more...and Diesel Fuel now Costs WAY more (at least here in the NW). But then a person is also adding DEF at the ratio of 1:50 that's another cost of 13¢ to 8.3¢ for every gallon of Diesel.
As a person will see below our '97 Cummins pretty much got 22-24 everywhere it went empty and averaged 14.9 pulling 4,000 lbs...where my wife's new 2017 Honda Ridgeline gets 26.3 on the Highway all the time...and has averaged 22.3 MPG over it's whole life...and we got 15.3 pulling the same 4,000 lbs. BUT NOW keep in mind this is a Boat which is more aerodynamic...Yet it would seem that Diesels no longer pencil out anymore UNLESS a person has serious heavy hauling to do like 20,000 - 30,000 lbs, and is pulling those types of heavy weights all the time.
So a 2020 Dodge ECO Diesel in good weather gets 12.43 MPGs and on a 28 degree day the TFL team gets 11.5 MPG with a Honda Ridgeline. So again, I know the Dodge was pulling 7K and the Honda 4K...and yes I know some people need to pull more. But my point is more about the viability and "True" Cost of Diesels anymore.
So, I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer on diesel, as a person will see below...I've owned a bunch of rigs...and YES, I'm 50 now...so maybe I am old and do not want a harsh ride anymore...and I love to "borrow" my wife's Ridgeline and put it in Sand Mode where it's i-VTM4 / SH-AWD puts all the power down and rockets up to speed and around corners (it actually handles better them my car does). So for me and our much LOWER towing needs...Gas is the most practical for us (just food for thought).

Wow you did the math! Awesome comment thank!
@@horvath3000 Thanks for your kind words of encouragement...I appreciate it, and I am glad it helped! :-)
@@teknightrider2586 thanks for the information. My question is what did you like about Toyota to make you purchase several of them? I'm in the market for a new truck and don't want to waste money on a truck that's not as good
@@mikeyjoseph8714 Thanks for your kind words Mikey 😇 Well, a much longer story shorter (longer I guess after I re-read)...you saw my "truck history", but I've actually owned 33 vehicles total (including the SUV & Trucks listed above). Of all of them, for me/for us, I'd have to say the Honda Ridgeline has been the very best truck by far.
We recently bought a Venture RV Sonic 200VML Travel Trailer (4,500 lbs. Brick on the Road). 😉 I drove from Oregon to Michigan w/3 people in the Ridgeline to pickup the trailer and drag it by the tongue over the continental divide and back home to Oregon. I was the most serious longest trip towing anything ever...and it was FABULOUS...no problem at all! I could easily go the speed limits or more if I wanted over any mountain pass.
Plus, as it turns out the Ridgeline is so wide I ended up taking OFF the extended mirrors that I'd bought...I know it sounds crazy to say "so wide" but it is...a person just has to go and sit in like a Tacoma, or Ford Ranger. The passenger's shoulder is like right there...where the Ridgeline is wide...and it really pulled like dream. It only got 10.1 to 11 mpg (which I thought was horrible after pulling competition ski boats getting 15.3 mpg), But then when I went to cry my low MPG woes to some friends...they replied with a "10.1 to 11 mpg pulling a travel trailer...that is GREAT!". Which surprised me at first, until they revealed that their brand new Dodge and another friend's new Nissen Titan that pull similar sized Travel Trailers get 7.5 - 8.1 mpg (so they made me feel much better). 🤪🤓
The Honda has been the only "Truck" that has had ZERO squeaks and rattles (which drive me nuts). And ZERO problems at all...it's been the same with my 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring...daughters 2015 Civic EX-L and my other daughters 2016 Civic EX-L w/Honda Sensing...they've all made me a Honda believer (again from my experience). Anyway the Honda Ridgeline is just exceptional for ride, handling with basically the Honda/Acura SH-AWD system.
Mini History of Domestic Woes...So, after all my woes with Chevy buying back our Suburban, and the Cummins being great except for the transmission going out at 32,000 miles, and the F-150 costing a lil' over $1,000 a month (month after month after month) in repairs when it got about 90K on the odometer...I had had enough of the domestics (at least from my personal experience back then). As they say a person's milage may vary with any vehicle (so I know some swear by Fords or whatever). But still anyone can look a Consumer Reports historical data from feedback from TONS of readers...and it's pretty clear when some car makers have a bunch of Black Filled Dots (which is bad) and car makers like Toyota and Honda have mostly Red Filled Dots (which is good) for longevity.
I owned several Toyotas because the family kept growing (notice the various cabs). However I will have to say that my last three (3) Toyota's were very "un-Toyota like". Meaning my 2013 Limited Avalon Hybrid w/Tech Package was a RATTLE TRAP, it squeaked like Styrofoam rubbing together over the tiniest little bump, or even going over like the crosswalk lines (I'm dead serious). Headline feel out of it, the front seats broke. Interior integrity was very bad in the last 3 Toyota's...the 2013 Tacoma road rough...it had 3 rear ends put in it...wind noise going at highway speeds...squeaks and rattles...uncomfortable seating position. I would have kept the 5.7L Tundra CrewMax if I'd known the Tacoma would be so dramatically worse...AND less MPG's than the Tundra. The 2011 Tundra had the TRD Dual Exhaust and it sounded AMAZING (like a classic hot rod). So this may sound strange, BUT the Tundra basically had too much power (at least when in 2WD). But it was because the Tundra could not put all of its power down to the pavement. The "Traction Control" nanny was always coming on...so there were dangerous situations where a person needs to get out of the way (if you know what I mean). And it was bad to have a vehicle that was constantly cutting power when a person wanted it to GO...and GO right now (not cut the power...I'd rather it would have spun the tires).
So again, putting down the power is one thing I love about driving my wife's Ridgeline...it puts down all the power ALL the time. If there are wet leaves on the ground (as we have in Oregon) you do not have to "think ahead" to switch on the 4WD it just grips any and all wheels and goes...it never hesitates and the 0-60 times of 6.2-6.7 seconds (depending on the test reviewer) is exactly what the Tundra would do, too (on paper if you didn't have to baby the Tundra's throttle). So I hope that helps...I'd really just go drive everything, and see what you think. Nissen's new Frontier has a cool look to it. Honda put a new nose on the Ridgeline (some people like it...others do not). I'm honestly NOT a fan of the ZF 9 Speed Transmission Honda is currently putting in the Ridgeline (my wife's Ridgeline is the Honda Made 6-Speed). So I think Honda is just getting rid of the ZF transmissions until they can switch over to Honda's very good (in house) 10-Speed...But again that is my 2 1/2 cents that I notice...I'm just a very sensitive driver with a sensitive butt! ha ha 😇
@@teknightrider2586 Ok, so I have now read all your replies on this thread--very helpful, thank for taking the time to post. For some weird reason I have always really liked the first gen ridgeline design. I have wanted to get one, but my 05 CRV just won't quit so i cannot justify getting a ridgeline despite the fact that the driver leg room in that CRV is tough and I am now 15 years older... :-(. Your real world comments have kept me coming back to the Ridgeline. Maybe I will go sit in a new one and see how it feels...Thanks again.
I kinda like that vehicle. I know its not a "manly" "Truck", but for what I need a truck for, it's a good blend of both car comfort and truck utility.
Charlie Zellner Most people buying the manly man trucks are white collar suburban boys who have never touches a shovel.
Hoss Cartwright Right bud. I think you have it switched around. I don't see Honda Ridgeline on farms.
It's just an a SUV with a bed. I really don't see the point of this thing...
YEah, I think there is a market for these. Although the price is steep.
plus, It's FWD...
Thanks for the video guys. I love my new Ridgeline and you guys have came through every step of the way in showing viewers how awesome this truck is.
Do you still have it? If so how has it been?
I have a black edition, use it for hunting camp, use it for fire wood, good in the snow and in the mud! Nice enough if your wearing a suit and tie,NICE TRUCK! Yes I did say TRUCK!
Now Chris - You have Good sensible Taste here !! Mine drives like a Rolls Royce !!
Chris Natale not a truck!!!!! SUV with Bed!!!! I’m getting me one of these
I'm LMAO at all the hillbilly hate for the Ridgeline here. Faster, handles better, better gas mileage, safer, better payload capacity (than any midsize), great 4WD system, and as made in America as made in America means anymore. Chevy/Dodge/Ford are and were great, but Honda is on to something here and Ridgeline advantages are undeniable....
its also not body on frame.
Hell Ford and Hyundai are introducing competitors for 2021
Great video Guys. FYI I find I get a little better MPG when towing with the eco off on my 2017 Ridgeline. Like you I found the trip computer to be off by about 1 to 1.5 mpg. Thanks for the review.
Robert Saenz I have a RTL-E and I'm averaging about 2-3 MPG off on each fill up. It's really fustrating that I can't get accurate MPG numbers. I hope there is a fix for this or update.
I towed my Arctic Cat Wildcat Sport in a 6x12 utility trailer and got 20mpg. That's my record. It took a while to find towing specs for the nissan juke but I finally found an Australian nissan brochure that specified that it can tow 1250kg. This test helps me feel a lot better about my Towing MPG with my Tacoma. Thanks for all your hard work!
Ian Sebastian that's not much to brag about. I gat at least that with two Harley's and a trailer and a bike in the bed of my Colorado.
awsome video again you guys have done it
Nathan & Andre, Thanks for doing this! Impressive hp for a honda first off. I have a feeling a bunch of folks will buy this rig after they see Nathan and Andre towing a trailer with it. Say what you want about Honda but it seems like they're harder to kill than just about anything else on the road. Dragging a 5000 lb trailer back and forth across the mountains on a regular basis might kill it but then again it wouldn't surprise me if it stood up to that as well. I've worked on several Hondas doing brakes and clutches mainly and to look at them they seem completely underbuilt but their recipe works.
Great video
I really like Nathan's jacket.
I used to tow an 8.5 x 16 V nose trailer with a 2012 Ford Ranger 4.0 sport V6 and I got 11.5 average no matter what I did with the trailer. I calculated many tanks. At times it would weigh 5,000lbs and I used an equalizer 6,000lb. weight distribution hitch and agility brake controller. It was a good towing setup for a little truck.
I tow 5000 ponds all the time with my 2014 sq5 and it has absolutely no issues at all
i watched a few of your towing tests. It would be nice if you can post a summary on the screen of the recent towing test mileages for comparison.
Hello Nathan &Andre! Thanks for a good test! That shows us we can get a DuraMax diesel GM Canyon or Colorado, for the same price as the Ridgeline, that might not be as cushy as a Ridgeline, but can tow more and haul more all the while getting better mileage and towing features standard. If you were to go with an ext cab gas Colorado, you could save a lot and still tow and haul more!
Kevin Voyer ridgeline actually has a higher payload rating than diesel gms, and about the same as 3.6 gas ones. So when it comes to hauling RL is best in class. Towing is where the difference is.
great review will we see any range rover autobiography reviews?
Past owner of 2@F-150’s and currently on The Beast-2016 Tundra and i’m stepping by game down to this cute little F@@@@R Ridgleine 🤙🤙🤙
Previous Ridgelines and Pilots recommend Premium Fuel when towing. Earth Dreams is mostly no different and probably more in need of premium fuel under high load. Did you check to owners manual in reference to towing fuel requirements?
It actually did better than I thought it would. I'd still rather have a body on frame truck for towing but the Ridgeline did well.
what are the MPG on normal driving with out towing. city and highway
"I wanna cheese burger. " lol
i should be making these kinds of deals my buddies. lol
I had one of the first gen Ridgelines and LOVED it. it sucked on gas mileage and got worse gas mileage when towing than my silverado v6...however it towed VERY well.
Same here & they surely should get better gas mileage than they do - they need to work on that issue !!
How is your silverado 4.3? I have an 08, i feel, its way underpowered. its only made to pull itself, any trailer, it huffs & puffs. Do yoi agree?
Initial price and increased fuel cost still puts this one ahead of the Duramax Canyon. Right? Was it stable towing?
What would the drop be on this (roughly)? If you're towing 5k would you expect a 2" drop? 4"?
what is temputure of air and what drive for tow haul did u use
It is possible to tow with this kind of vehicle which is front wheel truck primarily, but front wheel will wear off faster than if it was rear wheel driven trucks. Conclusion: don't try to tow a lot. If you tow, try to do that when there are no snow.
Was really hoping to see the Ridgeline on Goldmine hill as you note @ 3:55 for lke gauntlet & goldmine hill pop up but goes to a POS Colorado. Bummer.
Love TFL! Great job guys!
Unfortunately I think your gas mileage can be better because you have used a ECO button on your test and cut 30% averages of power down!?!?! So less power - more gas ! Please take another run in normal mode and you will get better numbers.
Thank you.
Interesting that the pump method shows less MPG than the in-dash trip computer. That's the way it has always been for the cars I've had with trip computers. I'm not surprised, because it obviously benefits the manufacturer to have you believe the car is getting better fuel economy than it actually is.
I was waiting to see if the transmission overheated, I believe Roman had that problem when he took the Ridgeline off-road.
That was because of the slow speeds, I think. The trans cooler doesn't have a fan, so when it's moving slow, there's nothing to push air past the heat exchanger.
If it didn't overheat on the Ike, it wasn't going to overheat on this relatively-flat test.
Stop and go traffic will overheat it
That's so weird too. i mean, 90's isuzu rodeos had a fan on their trans cooler, seems like honda would have done that in 2017.
does it have a temp gauge? id be really nervous towing with it after the over heating incident. is that why you guys waited until it was cold out?
It does have a temp gauge, for the engine. I would be more worried about the transmission though.
Did everyone miss the Ike Gauntlet? Worked the truck a LOT harder than this, and no trans overheating.
In the car book of my Old ridgeline 2009, it's write when you towing something heavy, put octane 91.
The second gen Owner's Guide has no such wording that I can find.
Pickup truck - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickup_truck
A pickup truck is a light duty truck having an enclosed cab and an open cargo area with low sides and tailgate.
ridgeline - Tell Em !!!!
The perfect pickup for city people who really can't justify or need a real truck. I can't count the number of city dwellers I meet at the club driving one ton diesel trucks who never have towed a single thing or hauled anything in their life and never will.
At least with this car/truck you can haul your big dog or your kids bicycles and park it inside your tiny home garage.
2003evodave yet it's a city ute. just like the El Camino, and rancheros. not meant for real work but for the occasional lumber run, and Honda fan base
It’s not the truck I want but it’s the truck I need.
I'd like this same test but with Eco Mode turned off.
Well, Dale Couture would tell you how much better this is than the GM twins.
Spaulding~ I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato salad...
Judge Smails~ Spaulding, you'll get nothing and like it. 👈. Would have been Nathan's best come back.
i haven't seen the towing mpg loop with the ecodiesel jeep ... unless i missed it
+Fabian Mujica We have not done one.
Of i were in Colorado I'd let you use mine 😣
Fabian Mujica I'd like to see that too
The Fast Lane Truck
We are waiting 👍
For looking like a truck, it still has that minivan vibe. That front end is not very aestheticly pleasing (for a truck). Always glad to see honda power though.
Nice and interesting review guys.
I just can't see why would anyone buy this Frankenstein over a real truck. I am not talking about the looks, I am talking about the platform, the suspensions, the structure. We could say that the New Pilot excels as a comfortable and convenient SUV/Crossover, but as a FWD pickup truck...
With that said, the Monster is in it's 2-Gen.
PS: is that drinkable water?
If you do not Need a heavy duty type of Truck to pull a Big Horse Trailer w/ Horses - - This is the ONE to GET as i Turned down a Rolls Royce & Cadillac and bought this Honda !!! ~~ But i do Prefer the 1st Generation w/ what i call the Sexy Hip - So Buy a Cream Puff w/ Low Mileage if possible ! It drives & handles like a Rolls - Has so many Places to put Things - Just a Super all around Truck in which can haul Extra Things in the Bed ( Hay Bales ect . ) with that Surprise Trunk & Out of this World Dual Opening Tail Gate !!! ~~ I couldn't be any more Happier w/ My Purchase - other than getting the Radio Speaker added in the back of the Bed & maybe a custom Two Tone Paint Job Later !! ? This will certainly go in my Collection as a Classic . When i BUY - Anything - I always Strive to get the BEST for the LEAST PRICE - but these Used Ones are still Expensive - So you have to Weigh your Option's & Go w/ the Flow !! The New Ones are priced much higher than other trucks of the same type - but if you just Drive this & really want more Luxury - this Can't be Beat !! The Power & Sound it makes when you step on the gas - Makes me Feel like i am in a Ferrari ! ~ So very Hot & that's probably why Everyone that does a Review on them - always seems to have a Smile on their Face !! I know i Feel like a Million Bucks in Mine !!! ~~
EARTH DREAMS BABY...SO MUCH POWER ITS ALMOST OVERWHELMING
The ridgeline is well made and 4 wheel independent suspension no other mid size truck has this and perfect for what made for.
David winters no argument there...personally it doesn't fit my lifestyle nor my needs. I look at this and feel they are pushing away truck buyers for a niche group. Alas, Honda feels they have market here but it's alienating a larger market in the process.
It's a hipster truck
David winters 4 wheel independent suspension is a nightmare if you use a truck as a truck. I'd love to see one of these drive across a damp louisiana cattle field. let's just say many suvs have tried and failed so why would this ute succeed?
You tell basically everything on trucks but not the gear ratio, hope in future you in you do, you get different mpg with axle ratio.
What's the mpg in the city, talking real world milage not the mpg on the window sticker?? Looking to buy a truck, don't need a truck but I just want one:) in case I need it. It will be my daily driver about 60 miles every day to work..60 city and 40 percent highway. I really would like to get at least 20 mpg combined. I care a lot about mpg..been reading alot on forums that lots of people are getting 13-16 mpg in the city?
I cant speak about the ridgeline, nor the 9 speed, but my mom's old MDX with the same engine and 6 speed got about 14-17 in the city depending on the day. I'd expect the same if not a bit worse in the ridgeline due to the extra weight.
I'm writing from Panama Latin America. I own a Mitsubishi Triton comparing it to gimmicks on this truck my 2008 truck has many similar features and is an older tuck
Tomas, the 1st gen Ridgeline had all the same main features when it was released in 2005. Gas V6/AWD/composite bed/dual action tailgate/electric rear window/In bed trunk/locking rear differential etc.. The Gen 2 version is nothing revolutionary when compared to the 1st gen either.
Lance Grieser yes you are right. This pickup looks cute, but I don't see it really fits for contractors type of people. I myself am a contractor, and I don't find these pickup reliable. And in the local market, these Ridgeline is bought by the people who has an office job and whant the macho feel of owning a pickup truck but not want a reallt tough pickup. For a contractor like me we rather go with a leaf spring suspension on the back for durability. Usually we prefer a diesel because of the torque and if looking for a 4x4 truck, we would rather go with sonething with transfer case. these AWD systems are cute, but nothing replaces a good ol'fashioned transfer case system. over these electronic locking diff we usually prefer mechanic actuated lockers, are way more durable and usually these, in the field experience, these electronic lockers disengage to protect ring and pinnion when the pickup is loaded to the max. Happened to a friend on a last gen toyota. the electronic diff locker disengaged when going down a hill with the truck loaded. almost had an accident because of the lost traction.
Pretty respectable milage for a car towing a trailer.
tsnorquist SUV with a bed*
Kyle Hurling you mean mini van with a bed.
+Douglas Wainwright If that's what i meant then i would've said that... This is basically a Pilot "which is an SUV" with a bed.
Ah, I thought they just used the Odyssey platform cause the front end looks exactly like one.
***** Yeah... They are similar
Most of all RVers pull their trailer at 65mph because it's fast enough vs. the mileage you'll get. Try it again but don't go past 65. You're guaranteed to get at least 15.
dam4274 no kidding eh, and your supposed to use 91 octane when pulling with a honda. silly guys!
All in all, Nathan, I think I prefer your waiter's jacket.🤠🤠🤠
MrKeyboardCommando Don't forget about Mr Trucks vinyl vest. He's the one that brings out the three pound deep fried, chicken fried steak with a pound of breading and 32 ounces of gravy. He also brings out the 5 lb steak challenge, you have a hour to eat to get it free. Of course he doesn't let any of it go to waste if you fail. He carries a knife and fork on him at all times. 😮
Troy Strain Never forget, Mr Truck is a style icon. He blazes a couture path few of us dare to follow. And he uses a shovel, not a knife and fork‼️🥓🥞🍔🍩
MrKeyboardCommando Yeah, that's true, and when your 5 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter, you can be quite a ball to be around.
Troy Strain The guy's got his own gravitational field.
MrKeyboardCommando Yes, he is quite dense too! 🤤
That same quantity of fuel would be $51.87 (US) at today's exchange rate based on a £1.20 per litre cost.
do the same with the colorado diesel to see if honda power can beat pop pop diesel
tinleo333 I regularly tow my travel trailer all over N.E. and upstate N. Y. With my 2016 Colorado Ext Cab, Z71, V6, 4x4, now my trailer weight just about the same as theirs. I never need more power and always have enough "pop pop". All the while getting 13 mpg on the flats and 10 mpg in the mountains on average. At times I can even bring my Sportster in the bed! That combo with the bike and trailer and all the stuff I need for a few days in Laconia, after rolling off a Cat Scale the GCVW was just under 10,500 lbs.! On that trip I was only able to average 9 mpg, as that is mostly all up hill. On the return trip I was able to squeak out 13 mpg. All the while going the speed limits and using the cruise control. Also at that weight I was never in need of more power! This is something I would never try in a Ridgeline. When I am just driving around empty and just the wife and I, we get 18 city and 26 hyw. That is while moving with the traffic in the left lanes at at least the speed limits.
U better have a thick billfold if get a diesel
y'all should have a set trailer weight to tow and have set amount of people in the trucks.. like the 16 tacoma y'all towed 5600 plus 3 guys in the truck but this honda you only towed 4800 plus only 2 guys oin the truck so thats around 900 pound difference that will change the mpg by alot.. set trailer by class like 5000 for midsize 7500 for full size and like 15000 for heavy duty
shawn benfield I'm pretty sure that was the max for this truck, they usually use standard weights but this truck is sort of in its own class.
Really i thought it was around 5500 pound towing capacity
shawn benfield everything I saw said 5000 in the awd maybe that minus an extra guy in the truck is how they figured what the trailer should weigh
IMO the new Ridgeline is a subaru, so ugly. I prefer the older version, what was honda thinkinh here? TFL rocks !!!
I know I probably missed it...but how much are you towing in this video?
Jorel Davis 4800lbs
+Jorel Davis 4,800lbs trailer.
The Fast Lane Truck did you all weigh the truck and trailer like you did in the Tacoma video? just curious as to total weight
Any comments as to how it pulls on hills?
Watch the Ike Gauntlet video for this truck. It does respectably well with the same weight they use on this towing test.
so the ridgeline comes pre-wired for a brake controller but does not come with a brake controller?!!
Eh, the wiring is the hard part anyway.
And as with ANY dealer or manufacturer installed accessory, you can do it cheaper aftermarket, most likely.
That's correct. The Ridgeline is prewired for a brake controller, but it does not come with one.
James C that's pretty standard. I have a Honda Pilot and you get the wiring dongle when you buy the trailer light harness (which is a ridiculous $300 )... the.black edition I'm sure has that standard installed ...
they actually started sending these out to owners. they apparently were left out by mistake. I got one in the mail unexpectedly last week.
With a price tag of over 43 grand there's no excuse for not having it.
I get around 19-20 mpg towing a car trailer (4200 pounds) @ 60 mph.
Not a 4x4 though and just a 170hp diesel van (around 5200 pounds with tools).
does anyone know why the back doors don't open more?
Thiago Maciel it's a serious design flaw. I think it's a deal breaker for someone with child seats.
I have to agree. I think that Honda rushed launch this product and thought that they would fix it for the next year. It might end up being recalled if people start to get hurt or stuck in case of an accident.
Why do you owe him lunch? You said you think it'll be in the 11's and it was 11.5mpg
That’s a Goss Hitch rated to 6K
To me its a decent looking car. I can see where they could be handy for those who want or need both but cant have or don't want 2 automobiles. It just ain't a good fit for my family.
Gas will vaporize at around 85 degs winter time driving willl ways be lot less on mpg
its not a truck its awd but its still a fwd platform towing a big load is to much. the control arms are going to get all the stress there's a reason trucks have straight axles in the rear.
At that altitude the 85 is perfectly fine if 87 is what is recommended at sea level.
5.0L coyote towing 4000 pound travel trailer and I get 11.5mpg. I was guessing 13mpg but I was wrong. Where is all that gas going??
A few reasons for the subpar mpg. Number 1 is drag, it's a big ole trailer compared to the size of the vehicle, if this was wider and taller, the wind wouldnt catch on the trailer as much. Also not sure how fast you tow, but they were going 70, if they dropped it down to 65 itd be more efficient. Also this 2017 only has a 6 speed (2020 and newer have 9 speeds), again idk what year your f150 is, but newer ones have 10 speeds. This trailer is also pushing max weight of the ridgeline's towing capacity, whereas 4000 lbs in your f150 is about 1/3 of max towing capacity. Finally, towing at high altitude requires a lot more work from the engine compared to towing at sea level, more engine work = higher revs = worse mpg. All those reasons account for the subpar mpg observed in this video.
i wonder if this new one will depreciate like the old one
Pretty much all do - unless you have a Timeless Classic ! ?
I respect this truck for what it is, and what Honda tried to innovate with it. But man, I just can't convince myself that this thing can compete with the other mid-sized pick ups out right now. I feel like it needs its own category. The "I'm really just a Honda Odyssey with a bed" category. LOL
The ride power looks and long lasting will out do the other midsize trucks
It is in its own category... that's the appeal.
It's not going to outlast any tacoma that's treated the same.
This is for those people that basically want a car or suv, but also want a bed for larger storage capacity every once in a while and/or tow a small boat or trailer. Not to go off-road and not to tow a moderately heavy load regularly. To me it feels like an El Camino. Is it a truck... I think so...just one that is more carlike. I think its a great vehicle to have in the midsize truck segment because it provides an option for those people that don't need a ... i guess you could say truck-truck.
I know you are bashing the ridgeline but you hit the nail on the head. Its not going to compete directly its going to attract a little different buyer.
That stocker trailer has some shit welds on it
Its hilarious that the eco diesel got better gas mileage while towing a 7000lb (instead of this 4800lb) trailer.
Why is that hilarious? It's a diesel, so it's going to get better mileage.
43 grand... you can get a ram loaded with a Hemi for that.
Different market. The guy who is going to buy a V8 fullsize would never even consider this truck.
Ryan Kiefer I disagree. a lot of buyers that are looking at the midsized market only start there. after looking at the prices and comparing them to the full sized truck you can get a bigger truck with almost the same gas milage unloaded for about the same price. especially since there are larger rebates on the full sized trucks.
for comparison purposes I was recently driving a 2014 silverado 5.3 2wd crew cab with the cylinder deactivation, and was easily getting 18 around town. now when I hoped on the hwy for a 50mile trip I only manage 24.3mpg but that's not far from this Ridgeline's rating.
now granted it was 64°, 100ft above sea level, and I was trying to eek out the mpg by driving 70.
but here in the south using a truck often comes within the extent of needing the larger bed size and higher tow capacity. sure I could tow my camper with a Colorado diesel but it wouldn't be fun running max tow ratings across several states at a time.
better mpg is always a plus which is why I bought my 2014 cruze diesel much like most households down here that have a truck and a smaller car or suv.
Ryan Kiefer they may not consider it but maybe they would reconsider it after seeing the small overlap crash test. Honda beats everybody and the RAM is a death trap and the Silverado and Tundra fair poorly as well. There is a great video showing the F150 which does pretty well and the Ridgeline if you haven't seen it let me know and I will find the link for you.
So Right On !!!
Using regular on a Honda V6 Engine #Facepalm...... 11.5:1 Compression... Yeah totally Regular Safe.
it recommends 87 octane so that's what the used. high compression doesn't always mean a car requires higher octane. there are many other factors.
Honda pushing Regular was just to meet CAFE´s Standards and Boost Sales.. They did absolutely nothing special to make the engine regular safe. The reason it works on Regular is because the ECU will pull timing on regular basis to compensate like every other Honda & Acura V6 since 2001 has been able to do.
This has been proved day and night on the Forums will affect overall MPGs, Power delivery and overall Engine Lifespan.
in Germany you can drive 86 Mph
That's really important to know. Thanks for the information.
theres no speed limits on private property in america (more useless information) top that!
phil tripe not at all dude
43 g's ? hellllll no I wouldn't buy this truck for that kinda money ... must be loko
I bought a Cream Puff for way less than 1/2 of that & Love it !!
GMC Jae 43 today and 40 tomorow, unlike GMC 43 today and 20 tomorow
Shouldn't this be on the fast lane car?
Not necessarily hating on the ridgeline, but for $43k you can get a nicely equipped 5.3 silverado that gets similar gas mileage. just my 0.02$
SOCAL3800 or a real truck. aka ram!
3d
Thought you were supposed to test trucks?
HAW HAW HE SAID IT'S NOT A TRUCK GUYS. GET A LOAD OF THIS ORIGINAL KID.
43 thousand dollar pilot with a bed 😂
Don't kid yourself, this is as much "truck" as 99% of people need. All the F150s and 1500s I ever see are mall cruisers, and only a few still use them for real work
You brought up two full size trucks to compare with the seriously competitive mid size truck market. Who are you kidding? I see more midsize trucks doing work than I do full size trucks. But you are correct about one thing. The full size market is like you say, mall crawler heaven.
Am I the only one who gets a good laugh at this over sized car calling itself a truck only being able to haul 5000 pounds?? This to me is rather funny and love to watch videos like this as serious entertainment as it has more features than actual usable things that people would actually need a truck for..
Man that thing is fugly, like everything else that Honda produces. it's definitely not a truck. It's a car with a truck bed on it, more like an elcamino than a truck.
Fugly you cant even afford it
Its way too fast...70mph with trailer is 20-25% worse fuel than 60. plus the outside weather is all the difference in the world.
PAID for by HONDA!!!
that Ridgeline is fugly
You need to test your trucks at the same temperature and weight in all the vehicles. Your method is nothing but a crap shoot. I always get better mpg in warmer weather.
Just look at all the electronics to fail . the sensors .the dash full of warning lights about to happen.
How's that different from any modern vehicle at all.
Hell, our government is about to legally require damned backup cameras.
So you stopped to mention the "cool" power rear window and the flip up seats? That comes standard on any decent trim level on all trucks... come on TFL we know this thing is an overpriced subaru but don't try to get us excited about something you can get from every other brand.
What other truck has a power rear window? I cannot think of one.
Most any full size has a power rear window available. The Tundra has an option that allows you to roll the whole rear window down, which is great on a fall day.
As said nearly every dull size truck has an option for a rear power window. I drive a ram and in the higher trims it comes standard
The ridge line is NO truck.
It has a Cab & a Bed ? What is that called then ?
Honda Ridgeline isn't a real truck.
Your opinion has been noted.
H0n4 r1Dg3linE !sen7 @ R3al Truck
Really who gives a shit about a Honda truck. Gmc, Chevy, Ford, and Dodge only make real trucks.
I have two big Chevy's - & i Prefer this One -Period !!!
Why you stil calling this a "truck" because its NOT. its only an Oddesey minivan with the shape of a truck. nothing more.
Does it have a box on the outside separate from the cab for carrying large items? Yes. Does it tow? Yes. It's a truck.
Is it the truck for you? Probably not. That's what's so great about having choices from other brands. Get the vehicle that best fits your needs.
its a truck its not even that small
Hey, HEY... at least concede it's an SUV with a bed. The Odyssey isn't available with AWD, but the Pilot is.
You know people are DUMB when they keep repeating the same Crap... The NEW Ridgeline is based on the ACURA MDX 2014 which is a completely new platform that shares ZERO with the Odyssey. So this New Ridgeline is an MDX with a Bed.
still not a truck fucktard.
I wouldn't even buy a ridgeline. it's a wanna be truck.
