    Well, this was a surprise. But I appreciate that you talk about this (even in such format). If it does make you feel better, some people do listen to your other music (which is not counted as “meme music” (tuba boss and etc)) and appreciate your effort.
    Your music has a lot of atmosphere, which most of the artists can’t achieve. Yes, even if it’s liked by a small amount of people, you still can feel proud of it (getting 4k-8k people to enjoy your music constantly is already a very big achievement as itself).
    You have achieved the point, where some artists already have given up, yet you are still going no matter what.
    Keep going, hopefully your other music would get as popular as some of your “meme music” some day!

    For me, I think a large part of the appeal is the imagination. If a piece is titled "Tuba Samurai Boss Theme" then I can imagine a scenario where this battle would play out using the music as a guide. Without that, its just a catchy song that might not catch my attention as much or be as memorable.

    I believe it's a problem most ARTISTS (let's stop saying content creators) face, you create something people like, but most people only recognise you becaise of that work, and have trouble distinguishing it from the rest of their work.

  • @peezieforestem5078
    @peezieforestem5078 Před rokem +5

    I think it's not just about memes, it's about a visual counterpart to the music that excites imagination. That's why so many music channels put a matching wallpaper or an animation in the background, and why concerts have special effects - it enhances the experience.
    That being said, having listened to your other stuff, tuba archmage theme is the track I enjoy the most, I like it better than its own remaster. Sometimes, as a creator, you produce an accidental masterpiece that you struggle to match from there onward. The situation gives me Grinch Ultimatum vibes - it's a combination of talent and luck that makes it what it is.

    • @NoahGiesler
      @NoahGiesler  Před rokem +2

      This brings up a point that I’d like to push back against. “You produce an accidental masterpiece that you struggle to match from there onward” describes a sentiment that isn't accurate. I don’t like Tuba Archmage Boss Theme, so I don't WANT to match it. Frankly, it would be easy to produce similar music; it is simpler in both harmony and production than anything I do now. The remaster is trying to get as far away from the original as possible while still being 'identical.' On the other hand, look at Saxobone Zone. People liked it, and I liked it, so I made A Skeletune the next year in an active attempt to replicate its style. The problem isn't an inability to replicate my older work. I just don’t like the things I released over the first year of my channel. In fact, I resent them for their undeserved popularity-the luck not in their production, but in their time and place.
      It is fair to want stronger paratextual elements to go with music, and it is definitely my intent to employ more narrative direction in the future. However, I also hope that people can tell their own stories. I enjoy seeing something concrete pulled from the abstract.

    • @peezieforestem5078
      @peezieforestem5078 Před rokem +2

      @@NoahGiesler I didn't bring up Grinch Ultimatum for nothing - I think no one would argue how garbage its "story" or animation is, and the tune, while catchy, is far from a compositional perfection.
      It's easy to imagine a version that is better produced, but interestingly, I think increasing its quality would only harm the work. Yet it's not as simple as people liking shitty MS Paint animations either - Grinch Ultimatum manages to capture something that is very difficult to put into words, and the shitty MS Paint aesthetic is a prerequisite for that atmosphere.
      I think a good analogy is a monster painting - if you make it overly detailed, no matter how scary the design is, people can clearly see and examine it, and so that removes some of the fear. But it is when a painter scribbles a silhouette which you can't quite discern that you start tapping into viewer's imagination, each person imagining what's uniquely scary to them. The mastery lies in that thin line where the scribbles are not just random, but are not overly detailed either, invoking the feeling of terror, but letting the imagination of the viewer to do the heavy lifting.
      Tuba archmage boss theme for me falls into this category, where what makes it a masterpiece is not the quality, but the fact that it captures something indescribable. Perhaps even you as an author are not aware of this - maybe you think you were just scribbling random things, to use my earlier example.
      I just wanted to let you know that, having listened to all of your music, I think tuba archmage boss theme has a magic to it that makes it special, it's not just a meme, at least for me (but I also suspect that it is like this for many others).

    • @NoahGiesler
      @NoahGiesler  Před rokem +6

      I’d like to preface this: this is the best feedback I’ve ever gotten in a comment (and essentially the only helpful feedback regarding why people like my older work), and I’d like to thank you for it. It has forced me to sit down a properly think through what is really happening more than anything previously.
      Pilotredsun is an interesting example to bring up, as he is not only an incredibly skilled composer and producer, but also a skilled animator-as strange as that may sound. He leverages an intentionally amateurish aesthetic to create absurdist art, and there is work under the hood that makes it impressive in a lot of ways. Admittedly, older things like Grinch’s Ultimatum don’t play with form or perspective as much as his more recent work, but even so, the music and sound design elements are always handled with intention. He isn’t scribbling or guessing, but rather making active choices that contribute to the aesthetic in ways that an actually inexperienced creator would not be able to do. I would be baffled to see someone inexperienced with music production create pieces on par with the microtonal and otherwise experimental music that Pilotredsun writes. On the other hand, Tuba Archmage Boss Theme is actually produced unskillfully. I was guessing and scribbling, as it was only the third or fourth finished track I’d made and the first finished track I’d made that wasn’t EDM. This doesn’t disqualify it from being compared to the intentionally grubby aesthetic of Pilotredsun, but it is a difference from the creator’s perspective that I’ll get back to later.
      The je ne sais quoi that these pieces capture isn’t indescribable, and I think it does stem specifically from the amateurish aesthetic. Bear with me, as I’m going to go on a little aside. You bring up monster imagery, specifically, the fact that less detailed depictions of monsters tend to be scarier because it leaves more to be filled in. I don’t think this translates to music, at least not in this context; you aren’t filling in elements of incomplete pieces. However, there is a directly related technique present in horror media that applies quite well. Many pieces of beloved horror media are produced with an amateur aesthetic-think Cloverfield or The Blaire Witch Project. This is for a couple of reasons. One is that withholding information by presenting things in low quality allows more to be interpreted. That phenomenon is what you’re talking about with low-detail drawings. However, the other primary reason (besides being cheap to produce) is that presenting movies this way makes them feel more ‘real.’ Despite the fact that it makes the mediation more apparent, it actually helps with suspension of disbelief. Because the presentation is through the guise of found footage, it seems closer to how we would see the events actually play out if they happened.
      The feeling of something being ‘real’ is what I’d propose gives pieces like Tuba Archmage Boss Theme the quality you are talking about. Stumbling across them feels like running into something organic. If you found a horror video online that shows a shaky phone video of a monster chasing someone, it would be more intriguing than something produced in 8k with a Steadicam. Much the same way, when you find tuba boss meme videos, it feels like running into a natural, organic phenomenon. The grubby aesthetic of the music makes more apparent the person making it. Like the wielder of a shaky phone, we become acutely aware of the composer. And, as it would feel more exciting to be a part of a comment section discussing a found footage video online than it would to be part of a discussion post of a professionally produced horror movie, it feels like being a part of a community to discover and talk about the tuba boss videos. I think discovery is a particularly key idea here. Running across a niche meme makes you feel like you’ve found something, and the lack of highly ‘produced’ sounding content makes it feel all the more special. As I get better at composing and producing, it actually distances me from my audience. Rather than being a dingy corner of the internet with a bunch of people making something for a community meme, it becomes just music. And music alone doesn’t make you feel like you are a part of something.
      I mean this when I say luck of “time and place.” Tuba Archmage Boss Theme released in a vacuum now would not catch any attention. Rather, the combination of weak production and the small community around it created the je ne sais quoi that is now inextricably tied to it. People listen to it not because it is a track of particular note, but because it captures the feeling of finding and being part of that community. Like nostalgia, it is a crystallization of something that has already passed.
      I could try to be more like Pilotredsun. He intentionally recreates that aesthetic and has been for a decade. In consistently producing music that sounds like it is from a Newgrounds game in the early 2010s, perhaps I could foster a community that yearns for that feeling-people that like discovering something grimy and real in a far-off corner of the internet. But that doesn’t interest me. This brings back the perspective of the creator I brought up earlier. Pilotredsun’s intent is to create odd and ‘bad’ animation and music. Mine has always been to make good music, I just wasn’t capable of that in the summer of 2020. While I sometimes may want to leverage something unconventional that won’t be for everyone, like the most recent microtonal piece I released, I don’t think I will ever go back to producing things that sound or feel like my early tuba meme tracks.

    I know I'm a little late to the party but I, as with many people who enjoy your music came for the memes and stayed for the better tracks. You are good at making music to have a vibe and good with different styles. I heavily prefer music without lyrics and the majority of the music I listen to is game soundtrack from the Civilization 6 and Beyond Earth, along with strategy games made by Paradox Interactive (Stellaris has one of the best soundtracks in all of videogames). The remainder is mostly by creators who have around your sub count (JRS Schattenburg(might be bigger), Ayden Geroge, and Revolution72). Anyways, every one of your newer songs are bangers and some of the older "meme" songs are, to be fair, a bit undeserving of the views(the OG Tuba Archmage, hidden toilet encounter are good examples). Legit whenever I get the YT notification that you've uploaded something new, I know it's going to be good. Sorry if it seems like I'm overly praising you, just a massive fan of your stuff.

    noah just had a mental breakdown with the tuba archmage boss theme remaster, and tbh i completely understand, has to be scary, yknow, the idea that you could be stuck in one type of content forever, but know this, you will always have an audience for everything else that you do, the fact that something you made went really viral just means you got some more people in your fanbase, and you might not recapture everyone that saw that video with your current content, but that doesnt really matter, i dont think you lost anything because of that virality, ofcourse i cant see your perspective on this, but i personally think that making a viral video shouldnt be a problem, but i wouldnt know.

    It's marketing. Apple isn't the (2nd?) biggest company in the world because their products are good, they're not, they're beyond garbage. You are essentially paying 5k for a high-tech toaster that needs its own ecosystem and can (sometimes) run programs specifically designed for that toaster. It's simply because people like "Apple", not their product. You don't have a "Computer", you have an "Apple Computer", you don't have a "phone", you have an "IPhone". You don't sell a product, you sell how people feel about a product. The reason why people click on one of your videos and not on the other, is because it makes them feel differently. Moving away from that makes them lose that feeling, and they will disengage. Of course you can rebrand, you can make another meme, make another gimmick.
    You seem to be in the unfortunate situation of being motivated by passion instead of fame and money. You need passion about something to be good. However, you are also in the fortunate situation of being ridicolously talented. Your meme-music didn't only take off because it was a great gimmick, the songs slapped as well, they actually felt appropriate for that specific "boss", which is extremely hard to do, and most artists fail at.
    Music is very feeling-driven by its nature, so good music usually creates a good feeling. Maybe try making a connected composition people can get invested in. You already did that before with the meme-music. But this is just a suggestion, I don't know enough about music specifically to speak on that.
