Very helpful video!!! I've been watching a lot of videos on pole climbing but I have not really seen any mistakes or just amateur climbers. Watching this gave me insight on what not to do and how to fix the mistake. I have pole climbing school all next week and wanted to get a head start by watching and learning. Thanks for the quality video!
@@scatoutdebutter I forgot I even commented this! But to give a testimony years later it’s super easy just always remember to be safe while doing it. I’ve seen some guys have some terrible accidents over the years
@@lageorgetrotter3478Thanks for the word. I'm an amateur tree climber with some spikes but I haven't used them yet.... I stumbled on this watching videos on using the "stick trick" for measuring the height of a tree
I climbed my first pole in '89. Burned a few. I hitchhiked a few times but preferred free hand. It's all about leaning back and keeping your weight pushing into the pole.
+Ayla Harper WE never used a safety belt to climb....we had street signs stop signs and other obstacles' to get over. The army trained me in 1958 and the safety was used only after reaching the work area..
in the uk we get an ass kicking for free climbing. have to have a choker belt on that chokes round the pole if you slip so you only go a couple feet. and once in position you have to put a fall arrest lanyard on as well! well, that's what happens in safety inspections anyway..
coming down has always been the hardest part for me ever since I slid 10 feet down a diamondback (treated pole). Getting the shivers just thinking about it.
I don't know, for me coming down has always been easier. Feels like you're just falling into the pole and the gaffs go in really good. Just a question of preference!
Dasveiner :And please give her BETTER instructions & pre-prep of how to angle the gaffs, keep ur butt out & dont lean in too far with your upper body while ascending. + I hope u will adjust her belt cuz that thing wz literally hanging on this clueless poor girl. As well as too loose around the pole. Her bf risked her having a serious injury. Wz just waitin for her to gaff out. Thank goodness it wz at the bottom. For me "hitch-hiking" the pole is cheating. I learned free-hand & wz never comfy tryin to hitch-hike. Secured my lanyard at the work spots.
When I first went to pole climbing school 55 long years ago, we began with simple poles ten feet tall and it was strickly hand over hand so we could concentrate on learning the angle of gaffing. Maybe modern safety standards require learing with a belt right from the beginning. I don't know if this is best.
In Greece they use a curved piece of metal on each of their foot which goes arround the pole. Much easier and there is no need to hit the pole. The same human weight prevents the curved metal from slippery on the pole.
An A for atleast trying and putting in a good effort. We have a couple of women where I work who are Linemen. Good job. You can do it, all you need to do is practice, practice, practice, and more practice.
She needs to grab her belt have trust in her belt....she did ok .... proud of her... equipment was big for her, what doesn't she go to line school...she tuffer than most women....my girl didn't want to try was scared...and also...said to hard...she a tuffy
The belt does not go on until you’re at your working point. That’s when you belt on. When you climb down, you belt off before descending. Spence is totally wrong.
No you’re wrong, it’s requirement now to wear a fall restraint unless you can’t fall over 6 feet such as using your secondary over a neutral. When you climb down you once again have a fall restraint. OSHA would destroy the company if they caught their linemen still free climbing
bobby gabaldon yuppa this looks like Dona Ana we were just there retiring service. they are moving it all to Rio Rancho now. I actually worked with a guy from continental divide when I was out there. really cool guy.
If she is or becomes serious, encourage her!! Utilities are looking for women "linehands" and can't find em...BTW your instructor was great with lots of patience...Cool vid...!!
When I was taught to climb, a belt wasn't used except when ice was on the pole and the buckle would cut into the ice. We climbed without a belt, military style. I was taught to climb in a spiral. I got to the top and belted off. My trainer told me to wait until he came back. Two hours later he returned from the coffee shop with me waiting like a dummy with dead legs. Lineman humor.
She is a trooper. My girlfriend cut out from the top during climbing school, it would have been messier if she wasn't wearing leather bib. The whole class watched her cut out and one guy quit the class right after seeing her fall. We climb without belting in until we reach our work height.
marry her.........
I like how positive you both were, and most girls say they cant do something before they try but she had trust

aww, she did good considering the equipment hadn't been sized for her... Kudo's to her for being such a sport :-D
You're a really good teacher, very patient. This is very cute too.
Good job! Baby Steps, Never hug the pole or you might burn it.
👍good job for being her first time.. hope you guys are still together after 9 years of this video. Cheers 🍻
Fun video, not as easy as it looks. Retired lineman, got out before bucksqueeze and glad I did
Bucksqueeze is awesome
Took my Wife out last weekend to do the same thing. She loves it. Great video . 👍🏻❤️
My wife loves climbing my pole also.

Why was this so funny I was laughing with both of you!

Good job brother show em what we go thru! She have more heart than some of the Ap's I've seen Out there.... Local 84
She got alot of courage! And I pretty smile too 😁
I'm a female who used to climb. I belted off when I got up to the top. :-) It's all about relaxing.
Yep never belt in till you are done climbing. Unless you like eating splinters.
Ayla Harper No kidding me too, but I climb radio towers, Nothing is better than belting off at 400 feet and taking in the scenery.
+Ayla Harper WE never used a safety belt to climb....we had street signs stop signs and other obstacles' to get over. The army trained me in 1958 and the safety was used only after reaching the work area..
Its all fall arrest osha required. Takes forever on cluttered poles.

Shout out to Charlie and Vick down there at the Las Cruces lineworker program class 2010!!! I recognize that yard all day.
In the Army the belt was used when you got to the top. It wasn't used to climb. Just used to keep you in place so hands were free to work.
I need to let my wife try so she can understand what I go through on a daily basis.
russweezy not sure why you allow that, better watch out, she’ll start thinking she can do it better than you

Wouldnt climb with that strap. Buck squeeze for the win
At least adjust the strap for her
That’s not how I learned. Back in my day (not like it was all that long ago, but still...), we free climbed EVERYTHING.

I see a lot of potential for trouble. It looks like one slip would lead to a long sliding fall.
1/4 inch is all it takes .... giggity

It’s only the tip that hurts 👍
Looks like you were born to be an instructor!
Great job!
Hold on to that best, trust the equipment!!
She did better than some of the groundsman we've had lol, this is really cool lol
She did a great job
the hardest part is letting go, trusting the belt. i personally aint got it.
She’ll get it it’s a lot to take in
That belt is famous
a+ for effort good job
I had a buddy who did midspans by sitting on the Telco, putting feet on the CATV and slide his butt right out to the middle! hahahah
you dont wrap the belt until you get to the top
Climbing spurs still looks mad weird to me. All our pole climbing is ladder-to-platform stuff...
She's a cutie. Drop and lock on the way down.
😂😂👍👍👍we all start like that.😆

Ioannis Zorgianos iv seen them and always wanted to try them but they look a little more clumsy
On the ground maybe, but on the pole they are super secure.
where can I find articles or a video displaying these?
She's getting ready to hurt herself
Whatever happened to the free climb? That’s how I was taught (back in my day lol, don’t mean to sound like an old timer, but here I am...)
Good job man
She's a real one
Good instructions
she's a good sport
coming down is the easy part, just let go

Good job. A little more practice and you’ll have it!

Not anymore. With AT&T we strap in at the bottom, and don't strap off until we're back down.
@@cadeheath159 same for arborists, we lanyard in at the base of the tree and flip it up as we climb

You should be a climbing instructor somewhere
this is cool first time i ever seen a lady attenpt to climb.good job on instructing buddy.check out my vids.
You’re a lucky boy
Why are you using a safety belt to climb???
+dean reynolds most companies require it now. They actually make you wear a stop fall belt. The days of free climbing are pretty much over.
I’m thinking the same thing. That’s not how I learned, but I can see why, for safety reasons, they’d demand that now.
It's called hitchhiking you young ass newbie. Look it up!
@William Villa How do you climb over street signs and other obstacles ? I am so glad I was a lineman when it meant something .
@Justin M Back in the day it meant more $$$.
Hitch hike

That straps wrong
great try
But the feminists said women can do these jobs just as well...
Get her ten more feet up the pole. Congratulate her. Get in the truck. Leave.
Why didn't you at least put the bucks squeeze around the pole
Why the dislikes?
not bad
