I listened intently as to what was actually going to happen. The presenter was very nervous indeed and didn’t seem to know the detailed content of the report. Here in the UK we would have had, on previous case experience, a swathe of timely arrests and then this press release then being made on a joint, police, agency, basis later that day. The section on internal Church procedures was then mystifying. You just can’t sweep the serious nature of these crimes past or future, under the carpet, to be dealt with solely by the church. Surely the procedure would be if the church receives such an allegation the police shall be informed. An offender in these cases can be a multiple offender and unless things are investigated properly justice cannot be served. Hence the crisis here.
I believe the United States has a concordat with the Vatican, how far is anything going to get with that in place?????

The catholic church is NOT the Church of God. The Church is made up of all the men, women and children who have put their trust in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ for their sins, not a cult that has for centuries persecuted and slain Christians who resisted them in Europe during the dark ages and instituted pogroms like the Spanish Inquisition and crafted anathemas by "magisteriums" at the council of Trent. This bothers me a bit. The report lists the actual names of the alleged perpetrators. None of these accused are going to court. But listing names can be dangerous and very chilling in that a person could be innocent and he has no chance to defend himself. He is not being taken to court - but his reputation is forever sullied. I am not catholic and do net defend actual perpetrators but this makes it so easy to target the church and individuals within the church....they are proven guilty without a trial.
Remember the rush to convict Cardinal Pell who served 404 days in solitary confinement. His conviction was overturned.

The movie "Spotlight" was released in 2015. How did this go unreported and/or undiscovered back then? I was raised a Catholic. Went to a coeducational Catholic school. Graduated 1968. Received a letter from lawyers in 2020 (52 years later) wanting to know if I had been molested by a particular priest. The school was supposedly co-ed. NOPE. The boys had priests for teachers and the girls had nuns. No other women I went to school with received a letter. Once again, I believe my name confused them. Last name being Arthur has confused people ALL my life. This is way past sad and despicable. How does it keep happening??? SMH (I am using my son's photo due to Google or whomever is responsible for doling out passwords.) I no longer attend church, but I still pray the Rosary. JMJ

I wonder and hope they investigate that as well. We see these investigations into the church pretty often. I would like to see that much focus on school workers. Being they spend far more time with our children unsupervised than any clergy.

The Catholic church can finally say it is not only them who sexually abuse children. Most public schools do almost exactly the same but I am not seeing this issue being investigated at this level.
They're trying to shut down churches, not public schools.
It is not nearly as rampant in the public schools as they are separate from the church and people don't put the same kind of trust in them that they do with the catholic schools. They don't exercise the same kind of influence and authority over the students and young people that the Catholic Church does. Further, this involves the churches probably more than the schools in any case, with alter boys etc. The public schools have no alliance with the church to worry about and would be far more prone to speak out about any offences.

@@TXNanna3 For sure, it does happen in other churches, but the Catholics and some Anglican churches seem to have a better hold on their members, and unfortunately that trust too often leads to unsavoury clergy taking advantage of the trusting children. They also create positions in the church for children to fill, like alter boys, junior choirs, and various assistant positions that give them access to the children.
This is not happening anywhere near the same level in public schools.

you are correct and every church and school and scouting program should be mandated to have a policy that requires stringent rules of conduct. And adult can never be alone with a child. Background checks on every person who holds a place of leadership, etc. a lot of churches already do that. Snakes sneak in to any organization that works with kids. Good policies must be made - and followed.

The Clergy comparing themselves as fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers, would this mean they are one big family and as such are giving permission for marriages or for sharing wealth based on forgiveness? A privacy matter that would have taken so long to catch.

A special note on the study of religion(s).
