  • Recently updated on the SA market, we drove the new version briefly at the launch, the Suzuki Swift has achieved consistently good sales for a very good reason.
Sporty looks emphasised by the "Helmet" design and trademark Suzuki "Clamshell" bonnet, the looks have been updated by the extra chrome strip across the grille plus smart looking new alloy wheels on the top GLX model as tested.
The biggest mechanical change is the addition of ESP (Electronic Skid Program) plus traction control on all derivatives, obviously a big safety factor. Most of the other changes involve added spec and luxury dependent on whether you choose GA, GL or GLX versions.
GLX now adds items like front foglights, the 15inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and push-button start, automatic air-conditioning (climate control), an 8 inch infotainment touchscreen with reverse camera plus Apple Carplay and Android Auto. All this for R19 000 more than the GL model.
All versions are powered by the very familiar 1.2L 4 cylinder petrol engine than delivers 61kW and 113Nm to the front wheels through a very light and efficient 5 speed manual gearbox. A 5 speed AMT automatic version is also available.
The figures may sound modest but the light weight of only 875 kg creates both excellent handling and fuel economy. Our overall figure of 5.0l/100km for the test period involved mixed driving and rates as excellent. It's also good to see that the manufacturers claimed figure of 4.9l/100km is actually (almost) achievable in real world driving.
The only item missing in the package (in my opinion), is the lack of auto door locking on pull-off. I believe that this should be a mandatory requirement on the SA market.
The GLX manual model as tested is currently priced at R218 900 including a 2 year/ 30 000km service plan and the Suzuki 5 year/ 200 000km warranty.

Thanks for the video. Just got my new Swift GL today! After driving my Hyundai i20 for 11 years...Suzuki knows what they are doing with that little engine.

How does the Suzuki Swift GLX compare to the Suzuki Ignis. Which car would you recommend? Or buy for yourself?
