  • When you are just getting started with wearing kilts a lot - as a lifestyle - is it better to buy one or two really good quality kilts or get several cheaper kilts so you have more variety and less worry?

I always say, "I'd rather buy nice, than buy twice!" ✨ 👍🏾 ✅
On another note, I cannot wait to wear my custom Nordic Heritage kilt this year 📆. I recently just ordered it 👩🏾‍💻. Thank you all at USAKilts, cheers!

My first kilt was a Fruehoff band uniform, altered to fit me as the Piper MacArthur MacArthur HS Lawton OK. Later I got a simple sport kilt in Clerk (clergy). I’ve gotten several at festivals, Duncan Modern, Saffron, County Cork, and a poorly made Duncan ancient from Pakistan that I do still enjoy. Even got McClarento wear with Woodbadge. Most recently ai got a nicely made Stewart Dress pleated to set which is simply beautiful to wear. I enjoy them all. Looking forward to a trip to Edinburg in a week. My Trotter ancestors had a lovely house outside town and a townhouse on the royal mile. Thoroughly enjoy your CZcams channel. Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Duncan

I have 3. First one was an inexpensive wool blend. The next was pv from USA kilts, and the last was a 5 yd wool Appalachian folklore from USA kilts. I still enjoy all three!

I currently own five kilts, I started out with a pakistani Black Watch package deal (Kilt, Sporran, belt and kilt pin), then I got a black Utility Kilt, I also have a K&C Casual and a 16oz 5-Yard in my clan tartan(Moffat) from you, and I have 13oz 8-Yard also in my clan tartan(Moffat).
If I was to start over, knowing what I know now, then a Semi-Traditional or a 5-Yard Wood kilt is what I would go for depending on the tartan, it seems to be the sweet spot where the cost vs quality match the best in my opinion.

My first kilt was an acrylic Gunn Modern, bought at Highland Games.
My first wool kilt was an 11 oz 8 yd Mitchell modern.
My 2nd wool kilt was 5 yd Innes Modern Red.
For all of these ; I was extremely ignorant at the time, and hadn’t done research. My measurements for length were wrong , so they were 3.5 inches shorter than they should be. And I’ve gone from waist 46 to waist 40, so the Mitchell doesn’t even fit anymore.
I don’t wear the Mitchell anymore & plan to replace it with 13 or 16 oz with correct measurements, and get Innes red again with correct length.
But, I’ve gotten about 7 others in 16 oz wool and have been very happy with them. :)

First kilt was a 8 yard wool from Duncan Chisholm & Sons, Inverness, Scotland. Second was a 8 yard wool kilt from Clan Albanach Kilt Makers, Queens Ferry, Scotland; and current kilt is a Great Kilt - Strome weight 4 1/2 yard double width wool from Duncan Chisholm & Sons, Inverness, Scotland. Out grew the first kilt. Some days I can fit into the second kilt. Always fit into a Great Kilt. I would recommend a Great Kilt, as it is quite traditional and can be dressed up with a formal shirt and a Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket...or dressed down with a simple peasant shirt. The most appealing aspect of the Great Kilt is how versatile it is for sizing. The least appealing aspect is having to fold it, to wear it...not as convenient as a tailored kilt. For those on a budget, get a 4 1/2 to 5 yards of a high quality wool tartan, a good quality leather belt, and a basic sporran. A Great Kilt is forgiving when the wearer changes sizes. Of course, a Great Kilt is not for everyone. Slainte. PS - living in Canada does make wool a better choice, as we have more cool days and less really hot days.

I have 5 kilts: 1 Chocolate Utilikilt, 2 off-brand utility kilts (1 gray, 1 black), a black sort of semi-traditional kilt I bought off a friend (probably looks the nicest of the ones I listed so far), and my wedding kilt which is all black (my wife and I work in theatre, so black made sense) and was sewn by my grandmother (thanks grandma!)
At this point, I've been wearing mostly the first 4 on a regular basis (generally, whenever I leave the house) since I started kilting about 8 years ago. I so wish I could trade in several of my kilts for a nicer wool kilt. I actually stand by most of them, but the off-brand utility kilts are practically falling apart. Would love something with tartan in it too, given my family heritage. But alas, not until we save up some money...
Oh, also, quick shout-out to Ian for getting me some great looking accessories that can really dress up nicer kilts - thanks so much!

Two with one on order. The first was a CHEAP utility kilt. Some things I liked about that but mostly it was too cheap. Second was a PV from you. I wear it casually a few times a month, esp. when lady friends as for it. The one of order is you high end along with a Prince Charlie. It's going to be worn on cruise ship formal nights! 🙂

I was nervous about getting the size correct. So my first I bought on ebay. I did spend a $270 with shipping. 8 yd, HOE.
Fraser Hunting. It's great. I consider myself extremely fortunate.
As I learn more. I would say first one going with (USA) 5yd PV or wood.
Again, that ebay purchase. I think I got really lucky.

I agree 100% I would only add the lighter cheap ones can be really nice on hotter days! 😂

I'm planning to get a great kilt for myself, but I'm on a strict budget. I'm trying to decide between one in a family tartan vs a PV Kilts & Culture. I might try to save up for a while and get myself a 5-yard wool in my family tartan as well. There are just so many things I'd like to buy that I can't afford.

I have 10 kilts and usually spend around $200 to $300 on each. On the cheaper end of actual kilts but dependable kilts and washer friendly kilts. Talking about kilts an ad came across my Facebook feed and I thought to be funny. I noticed that you two like to make fun of weird kilts like the half kilt and such but I seen this time was a grill kilt and I thought you gotta be kidding. So next video or whatever in the future, I wanted to know what you think of it?

I bought my first kilt from usa kilts, a casual kilt, then I joined the Army and gained alot of weight so it doesn't fit me anymore, and now I bought a five yard wool kilt and the lowest quality I'll go is semi traditional, the casual kilt likes to give you Marilyn Monroe status
