STI testing in India is sort of non-existent. I think I'm a fairly sex positive, outgoing person who would certainly have come across this kind of discussion if it existed. I've been to gynaecologists to discuss PCOD and contraception and nobody really talks about HPV or honestly, even HIV. No posters in clinics or such. I learnt about HIV in high school and haven't heard about it since. There are a couple of LGBTQ+ collectives near where I live that encourage regularly testing for STIs and I learnt about these from queer friends in touch with these organisations (since they provide services for mental health, legal and safety related support for queer individuals)

Do they test you for HPV regularly when you go to your gyno appointments? Here in the US you are automatically tested for at least HPV during the regular ob/gyn pap tests. But in regards to regular STI testing, it's the same here as what you stated: it's generally the LGBTQ+ organizations that encourage regular testing and offer it for free.

I had an assembly in year 12/13 about STI, STI clinics and different forms of contraception. It was really informative and myth busting (like the doctor won’t judge and the receptionist won’t comment/declare that you suspect you’ve caught something). I suppose being at the age we legally could have sex, my school dumped the scare tactics and got in health professionals to tell us correct info and that it’s okay to go to a clinic about your health

This was very thought-provoking and lovely.
I recently got my blood work done and as usual, when my doc asked if I’d like to check for any STIs, I said “sure, why not!” I’m in a monogamous and long-term relationship, but i think it is still important to get tested. Not only for a little self-reassurance but as a little way to break my internalized “purity culture” stigmas, and also reinforce that people are using the testing resources available.
I also am 2 shots into the HPV vaccine. When I told my friends, one of my buds was happy and told me that they also got theirs on their own too! I am in Canada, so it’s all covered under my provincial health insurance (except the HPV vaccine, which fortunately my work insurance partially covers).
Watching this made me realize that I have never actually known whether they check for herpes, so I had to do a google and maybe I will ask about it next time I have a doctors appointment. I have had some general anxiety for awhile about herpes in particular because sometimes I get acne-like bumps on the corners of my mouth and I have no idea if it is a cold-sore or just acne (I get acne on a regular basis). I think it would actually be a relief to know whether I have it or not, so I could avoid kissing and giving oral sex if know I have an active cold sore. At this point, not knowing if it’s acne or HSV is just something I think and worry about as a person with anxiety. It is really interesting that the healthcare community has decided that it is more worrisome for people to know, so they don’t really test for it unless there is a clear reason to. I guess that is kind of nice for the folks who would just rather not know, if it isn’t going to bother them. I just like having all the possible info that I could possibly have for any given situation.
I usually quite like knowing things and it generally makes me feel better because then I know I can make a plan on how to handle things.

This couldn't have come up at a more perfect time. I recently tested positive for HSV-1 because I had my first outbreak. I would say that's the only time I've experienced pain during a test because they had to swab the sore and for me they came up like ulcers and were quite painful to the touch, so the swabbing stung a bit. My initial check was at the walk-in GP and he just took a quick look, said "It's probably herpes" and prescribed antivirals... so to be sure I went into my local BCCDC STI clinic and the nurse did the swab there. She was really kind and asked me how I was feeling because she sensed there was some anxiety about it potentially being herpes. Several of my partners have had coldsores so the chances are I got it from either my current partner or one of my exes during oral sex The antivirals helped my breakout clear up and I spoke about it with some girlfriends and they were super sweet about it and one of them said she has the same. We're all cyclists so the hardest thing for me was not being able to ride my bike for a week. Hoping outbreaks are infrequent and if that was the worst it gets (which I've heard is usually the case) then it's not so bad. Thankfully my partner is really understanding since he already has it orally and doesn't care if he also contracts it genitally (although I have read that chances are lower if you already have the virus elsewhere in your system). We're also in an open relationship and I mentioned it to a new potential partner and he took it really well, so thus far I've had a pretty good experience disclosing it to people. Hopefully videos like these make it more well-known and then it will be an easy conversation for many.

In the case of another outbreak - an ointment with zinc (eg. Desitin) helps the sores to heal faster and a cream on coconut oil base with lemon balm essential oil has impeded or weakened outbreaks for me when applied with the first symptoms. Of course you should always check with your doctor for safety but I wanted to share these things I had to learn the hard way.

As a person with an open relationship in the Netherlands, I've had a lot of STI testing done. When sexually active with multiple partners, I went the recommended every 6 months. You can get free STI testing if you are under 25, are a victim of sexual violence, or if you have "risky" sex partners (aka, gay sex, sex work, etc). You get a blood test, which is taken by a nurse, and then you do an genital and anal swab, which you do yourself in the bathroom. It's very easy, and the people at the clinic in amsterdam are very kind and understanding and not judgemental about any kind of sexual acts or partners.

For HPV, they have to take a skin sample and biopsy it, and it can be a little expensive and possibly not covered by insurance depending on where you live or your insurance, it's much easier to take a biopsy sample from those with a vulva and cervix than it is from those with penises, so those with a penis may never have and may never get an HPV test unless they show symptoms, which tends to be rare, they usually tend to be just carriers, but since there is no reliable testing for it for those with penises, HPV is one of those STI's that spreads like wildfire, and condoms almost never protect against it. I knew absolutely nothing about any of this when I was diagnosed with 2 strains of HPV almost 6 years ago (one strain that causes warts and the other can cause cancer). I had only been with one partner at that point and there were a couple of times we weren't being careful, even though both of us had the general STI exams, neither of us knew much about HPV. I now have cervical dysplasia that has to be checked on every year to make sure it hasn't morphed into cancerous cells. I used to also be the type that was against the HPV vaccine because of the usual things like "there hasn't been much testing on it", or "we don't know if it will mess up the reproductive system or not". I had no idea that HPV was a skin related issue and not a reproductive issue, nor did I know that both people with wombs and penises can get it and how hard it is to test for. I totally for the vaccine now, and it's much better to get it before sexually active. I'm in my 40s now, but I heard that I'm finally eligible for the vaccine, though, I mean, I already have 2 strains (they are dormant now, every HPV test I've had in the last 4-5 years have been negative), I don't know if it's worth it. I am currently in a long term monogamous relationship, and as of now, I don't see it changing.

    • @wolfferoni
      @wolfferoni Před 2 lety

I kind of want to do a HPV test because I've been with a few partners and didn't get the HPV vaccine but a biopsy sounds very unpleasant. In Australia, in year 7, all students are recommended to get the vaccine for free but I didn't get it because my mum had similar worries as you - it wasn't tested well and there was some story about a family friend having side effects. I didn't know about HPV at the time and was just glad to not have to get an injection. I'm regretting it now. I'm in my mid-20s and think I should go for it but man can it be expensive. If it's not too expensive for you, I don't see the harm in getting it. There's no way to know whether or not you'll stay in a long term monogamous relationship for the rest of your life, considering you're only in your 40s, basically half of your life. I think the cut-off is 45 but it might be different in different countries.

I've just realised something. In German, "safe" means "sicher" and "safer" means "sicherer", and "sicherer" is also how you decline "safe" to put in front of a male noun (in this case, "Sex"). Because of this, I've always assumed "safer Sex" as they say in class is people trying to make it sound more German by adding -er rather than meaning "safer sex"-sex that is saf_er_. What a realisation.

Thanks for the nice video! Just a note: It's Hep C that is generally sexually transmitted. Hep B is transmitted only via saliva and not genital secretions so technically not sexually transmitted. Hep C is transmitted via blood and genital secretions like HIV.

Here's the crazy thing about the STI photos they show in sex ed- some had never even seen other sexes' genitals prior to that lesson. I had a relatively sheltered upbringing, so I didn't know what a normal and healthy penis looked like before they showed those photos, and in part, that's because that's not their goal. I was incredibly confused when I first saw my boyfriend's penis because sex ed didn't even care to talk about what a foreskin was and the various normal and healthy ways genitals can look. It's weird that they only show photos of real genitals when fear-mongering and otherwise just use diagrams that aren't totally clear.

Great video! Your content has made me more confident about my body and being sexual. I actually got the confidence to ask for an STI test!! Which is a big ol step for someone with anxiety. The nurse taking on my case was very very kind and reassured that getting tested is a form of 'self care'. My tests ended up being negative BUT the way the nurse treated me so kindly definitely made my experience nice. Idk about us/uk experiences, this happened to me in Finland within the public healthcare circle.

I was tested for HIV against my will... I went for a job interview at a hospital a few years ago, and had a blood test as part of the hiring process. When my results were available, I found out they checked for HIV, even though nobody asked for my consent. Thankfully it was negative, but this was not the way I wanted to know. I didn't get the job, BTW.

Glad you covered that STIs can be transferred via other routes aside from penetrative sex. I am a virgin who has HPV. Though, the interesting thing about HPV is that it also encompasses more than just genital warts, but actually includes all warts.
Then again, maybe not all strains are considered STIs; I have had warts on only my hands and ankles, so I suppose it's possible the strain(s) I have wouldn't be if that distinction is made.

I did STI testing in Canada a few years ago to check for anything before entering in a new relationship, and it was a urine test and a blood test. I am also a virgin so at that point vaginal swabs weren’t necessary, but blood and urine are the basics here.

I think the wait is honestly some of the worst things, as you do the test and you wait ages for a response. Although the worst I ever had is I went for my first test and got slut shamed by the nurse, I ended up filling a complaint and got a response back from the hospital with an apology. The lack of education really does negatively affect Herpes as all the portrayals are negative, and I think the lack of being able to test for it actually doesn't help.

Thank you so much for this video. I shouldn't thank you for something, that we should have learned in school and from our parents, friends and the society around us, but i will send/show this video to many of my freinds now, when talking about STIs. One of my freinds for example was very happy when we first talked about her problems "down there", confessed that she once had an outbreak of an STI, is now on the path of curing it, but still feels dirty and also devoloped a kind of vaginism because of it , AND i said that i know how bad it must be for her because she always used protection. She really had a smile on her face, when she realised, that i was educated about STIs and the i know, that you can get some just by bodycontact (in the "right" eareas). So we talked about her first boyfriend betraying her and bringing a STI into the relationship, which she is struggeling with for two years now, because doctors didn't assume her having an STI - because she just had one sexual partner, was young, dressed nicely and still lived at home ...

At the Military Public Health clinic they posted statistics of how many from which group reported with what disease, just a count no names or ranks were listed.

I'm still so mad about the routine tests in the US/my area being only for Chlamydia, ghonorrhea, and HIV. It shouldn't be up to the system at large to decide that people don't need to know if they/their partners have herpes, HPV, syphilis, or trichomaniasis. I don't fucking want those! Thankfully I can still get tests for everything through my primary doctor. But what about the people without insurance or who are otherwise disadvantaged who just need the easiest and most accessible option to get tested? Unless they have symptoms they could potentially be reassured by negatives for those three things, meanwhile be spreading something else even though they tried not to. That's so fucked up. That's not informed consent. That's not do no harm.

  • @jlbeeen

I wonder how things are affected by viruses that can cause both STIs and other things elsewhere. Like cold sores and warts. I'm extremely prone to warts to where I can't even share a bathroom mat with people without getting something on my feet. I am asexual so sex is something I find intriguing as a concept, but also not something I could see myself doing much even with my romantic partner, and I know there's the idea that you can't get anything if you're only with one partner. I do wonder about those viruses that spread in other ways, getting into worse places.

I wonder if in ‘health’ class (which is what Sexual health was called in my school) was actually about more broadly health and talked about symptoms you should watch out for in regards to various health symptoms like flu and diabetes etc, and included STI symptoms as a ‘this could be a symptom of X’ as part of a broader recognition of health could help with the destigmatisation of STIs because they are a HEALTH issue not a moral one.

infection vs disease. think about in terms of other illnesses - e.g. a chest infection vs lung disease. An infection is usually quick to come and go and won't necessarily lead to anything else if treated. a disease is a long term illness that might not be able to be cured.

When I did sex education at school in about year 9, the nurse showed us the uncensored STIs. She showed us a map of people who had slept with each other. It started with someone who had only slept with one person. The person they slept with had slept with 3 people. Those three people had all slept with three people, one of whom had an STI. She asked us who she would be most worried about. The answer was the person who'd only slept with one person. It was such a damaging lesson because it's teaching definitely slut shaming and saying it's not so important if someone who has multiple partners gets an STI because they essentially brought it on themselves
