O'Neal checking himself out of the game to preserve Reggie's 57 point Pacers franchise record showed ultimate respect to his idol and it was one of the classiest moves I've ever witnessed on a basketball court. The Fieldhouse was deafening loud and we all knew why he checked out and we loved Jermaine even more for it. Absolute chills. There wasn't a dry eye in that arena. This video doesn't do it justice on how loud it was. It vibrated my chest cavity it was so loud. 15 years later and I still get chills to this day like I'm seeing it for the first time.
Edit: That announcer had absolutely no idea what he was talking about lol.
why tho? records are made to be broken
If he really respected Reggie, he would break his record
I appreciate the back story here. I'm not a pacers fan (celtics actually) just loved O'Neal's game and I had no idea. Cheers.
I'm from Indiana, I'm old and have been a Pacer fan since I understood basketball since about 1982 when I was 6 years old. I watched this game, Jermaine left the game on purpose in honor of our greatest player ever, Reggie. I know you probably don't care, I just want people to know who Jermaine was in his heart.
I remember I had NBA Live 03 and I had the pacers and traded for Ben Wallace those 2 are often forgotten as two of the best defensive forces the game saw
He was a BEAST
Please do not forget he was candidate MVP
For a good 5 years, Jermaine O'Neal was the East's best big man, i was big fan of his game

@@barrybshrekson864 shit, I’m still on it too, da hell you mean?! That could’ve been another All-Star MVP for Jordan and a hell of a way to leave the game! History in the making was taken away by Jermaine O’Neal and his stupid ass foul!!!!
