Nissan Radio Problem Fixed

  • After some pain having the radio and information system in my 2012 Nissan Pathfinder dump its memory each time I turned off the vehicle, I did some research on the issue. It turns out most, if not all Nissan vehicles have something called an Extended Storage Switch. The fuse within this switch turned out to be the issue.

      I have found mine can still be problematic. For example if I disconnect the battery to do something it can re-scramble the memory. And then I have to either deal with it, or yank the fuse once or twice. There is definitely a deeper issue, but somehow this fuse is on the chain of that issue.

      I hope it works for you. It definitely worked for me, but I find the issue periodically comes back. If I remove the battery or otherwise have the power cut its almost a sure thing that the issue will come back. Then I'm back in the fuse panel pulling and replacing that fuse. Its like there is a deeper issue somewhere, but that fuse is on the critical path to the problem. Judging by the number of views this video gets (more than any other video I have) this isn't an isolated problem. I've asked a few Nissan Dealers and they said they can replace my Head Unit for $1500. I want the clock to keep time, but not that badly.

    I am having an issue where my 2017 Pathfinder radio will never turn off! I found a hot wire behind the radio and when I cut it the radio finall turned off. I pigtailed the wire to another wire that was only hot when I started the car and that kind of fixed the issue. Unfortunately now I have to accept the user/information agreements every time I turn my car off and back on again. I am guessing the wire that I cut has something to do with extended memory, but it's weird because my radio doesn't forget anything, it just makes me accept the ser agreement. I was thinking a bad ground but holy crap, the wiring on this car is absolutely absurde! I have taken it to the dealer and they waisted thousands of dollars telling me they were fixing it, but in the end I got my car back not working. They are now telling me I need a whole new wiring harness and that's something like $10,000 after install. There has to be a solution to this issue! I still owe somewhere arond $24,000 on this car! Please help! Thank you so much!

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  Před rokem

      $10000 is absurd. I miss the cars of the late 1990s and early 2000s where you could go to best buy and buy a head unit for $250 and it would sound better than anything that is stock today. Straight up front, I don't know anything about the 2017 Pathfinder and its radio. I can tell you this 2012 is a nightmare, but your issues sound worse for sure.
      What I have found to actually work is to re-synchronize the smart keys to the vehicle. The issue is that it will work perfectly if I only ever use one smart key, but if the wife goes and drives it with her smart key it all goes to hell again. Its not a factory re-programming, there should be an online guide that tells you how to do it.
      But if you cut a wire then I'm not too sure. I also don't know why it would just stay on. That is strange.

    Is the white plastic housing permanently attached? If not, how can you remove it to replace the fuse. I've got the same problem, but after pulling out the fuse, it will not fully unseat the housing. I can put it in and out of “shipping mode” but the radio still resets all settings.

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  Před 3 lety

      Yes it can be pulled out, and in fact I did pull the one out of my vehicle. I pulled the passenger side of the fuse housing out first using needle nose pliers. sort a twisting motion towards the driver's side of the vehicle, then I pulled out the driver's side of the plastic clip. It can be done, but it is definitely harder than you'd think it would be.

    Mine is a JDM Gtr R35
    I've been having this av unit fan non stopping even when the car is off for a while now, but I figure I just pull the av fuse out everytime I park overnight then it should be fine. And it has been good for quite some time until recently one day when I start the car (I put the fuse back in everytime before I start the car) the radio won't turn on (if you push it it wont make sound and if you turn it wont show volume bar) radio status is OFF, and when this happens the reverse camera will be blacked out too.
    What I notice is that if the car is parked overnight with the fuse out (the battery will drain if I dont put the fuse out), the next time I drive the car the radio and the camera slowly come back on (after 5 minutes of waiting) and as long as you dont turn the car off, it will continue working. But if you make a stop somewhere and turn the car off for longer than 10 minutes, it sometimes will then work sometimes won't, and then if you make another stop and let the car off it won't work anymore until I get back home and pull the fuse out and wait till the next drive.
    it is like the car is getting a hard reset once it is off with the fuse out but then when you just turn off the car and go somewhere and come back it is like only getting a soft reset which leads to losing the audio and reverse camera image. do you have any ideas?
    I will try to.look at this fuse tonight and hope it works. It's been troubling me for too long!

    Hi DIYNorth! Thanks for your video and many replies to others. My Nissan Altima 2012 has a similar problem. The sound does not come out although CD player seems to work fine as I see on the display that tracks are working; telephone seems to work although I don't hear any sound out of the system. My friend called on my mobile and I answered through the car bluetooth. He heard my voice but in the car I do not hear him. The panel shows the last used radio stations; yet the key pad where I have stored other stations do not display on the panel when I press any of those keys. It's mainly the volume button that doesn't operate normal... I tried to pull that white plastic blob in the fuse block as you suggested but it doesn't come out completely. It stops halfway. What should I do to pull it out completely? I was afraid of crushing when using the plier. Looking forward to hearing from you. Eric

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't know anything about Altima's, but to me it doesn't sound like the same issue that I'm having with that long term storage fuse. To answer the last question first, yes that white thing can come out but it isn't easy. I used needle nose pliers and removed one side at a time. Sort of twisting motion, but yes difficult. It might make sense that people can hear you but you can't hear them. There should be a bluetooth microphone somewhere in the car that is separate from the speakers which picks up the sound of you talking and sends it onward. If everything looks like it works but there is just no sound it could be an issue with the volume control, but it could also be another issue. Does your car have a separate amplifier? Perhaps under the driver or passenger side front seats. If so that might be the issue, it could be the head unit is sending signal to the amp, but the amp isn't pushing that signal to your speakers. The amplifier also likely has an inline fuse somewhere, if that is blown it will also impact your sound. If i were to test it what I would likely do is a reset of the stereo, then look for any fuse that might be blown, If there is an amp I'd check to see if it is receiving a signal and or outputting a signal, then lastly pull the head unit and see if there is a signal coming out of whatever is there for speaker outputs.

    • @DIYNorth

      they are fairly typical vehicle fuses. I find that they are a bit smaller than the fuses I'm used to on North American vehicles. Generally there are enough spare fuses in the various fuse boxes that you don't need to buy one the first time a fuse goes out.

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't have any navi, but maybe. If you turn the car off, and it resets itself after you turn it on then perhaps it is a issue related to the long term storage switch. On the other hand if the vehicle is running and it just drops out and restarts, then I don't think it will be a fuse, but rather something with the navi/headunit.

It makes absolutely no sense when it does that. Its like there are settings that are burnt into the system.

      then on the driver's door press unlock, then lock.
      turn key back to off and remove it.
      that's it.
      Why would that work....I have no idea. but it seems to have worked.
      I initially did only one key, and it worked fine with just the one key fob, the second one would mess it up again. now that i did the whole thing again with both fobs it seems to work with both of them.
      There seems to be a few types of key Fobs in the Pathfinder line up, and if you search nissan intelligent key or key fob reprogram in google you'll find some nissan dealers have details on how to reprogram various types.

    Hi, my radio clock won't hold the correct time regardless of how many times I set it, the memory of the presets are fine, is this something that you experienced ?

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  Před 4 lety

      Yes, I have had this issue, and it's very annoying. Basically every time I remove the battery or just the negative cable the Nissan goes back to this state on me. The only way I have had any luck fixing the issue is to set the clock with the vehicle running, turn off the vehicle and the headlights and pull the long term storage fuse for a few seconds and then re-insert it and turn the vehicle back on. Even then it doesn't work every time. I don't know what the root cause of this electrical problem is, but for some reason the long term storage fuse removal has been the key to getting the time sorted out in my case.

      Does your vehicle have an amplifier in addition to the stereo head unit in the dashboard? (amp might be under a seat) If the tweeters can be heard, I would probably work backwards from the speakers towards the stereo as it is obviously sending some signal.

      I already checked under the seats and there is no amplifier, I checked the fuses and they are all good! I thought about changing the stereo for a new one, but how will I connect the air conditioning controls so that it can be seen on the screen of the new stereo?

      by the way the steering wheel controls do not work and the horn does not work !!! I don't know if the electrical part of the steering wheel rim is affecting the stereo and inhibiting it

    • @DIYNorth
      @DIYNorth  Před 3 lety +1

      No sorry I have never even seen a Frontier radio to provide a solid opinion on it. If it is a standard double Din head unit though I would consider just getting an aftermarket head unit put in at a stereo installation shop or do it yourself if you have the confidence. I know the Bose head unit in my Pathfinder is $1000 at Nissan which is insane so I wouldn't go there. As long as you don't have Navigation or a complicated set up that would make it problematic I would personally go aftermarket without hesitation. It will work and will sound better.

      Do you have the same vehicle? Mines a 10. Also they are very much colour coded. Reds are 10, Blues are 15, and Yellows are 20. If you have a different fuse type the colour may differ, but look at your other fuses and they should have some indication of size on some of them.

      Interesting that this is such a common thing across Nissan platforms since I've never had this occur in any vehicle before. It doesn't apply in my situation, but I have read that some Nissan models have a smart key that stores user preferences (radio station, time zone, etc.). If you have such a key it might help to set your stereo and then reset your user preferences to that key FOB. Just a thought.
      I'm going into Nissan in a couple of days, I'll ask them why their radios suck so bad.
