During DSEI 2019, Gunnar Wieslander, Head of Saab business area Kockums, gave us an update on the Gotland-class submarine upgrade program for the Royal Swedish Navy, as well as the latest with the next generation A26 Blekinge-class submarine.
In addition, Richard Keulen, Director Naval Sales Support at Damen, told us about the cooperation between Saab and Damen for the Dutch Walrus replacement submarine competition.

I'd be so proud if the Royal Netherlands Navy would finally would be allowed to choose this design and have it built in cooperation with Damen.

I do hope both nations safeguard the technology lest lest it fall into Chinese or Russian hands.

I'm not sure but it looks like this sub may not have been ready for an export market offering when the Aussies were shopping around for one. I'm going by what the SAAB people were saying in this video.

This would be a good design for Canada. Our submarines are in poor shape and need to be replaced. A non-nuclear sub that can stay under water for that long would be great for patrolling under the northwest passage ice.

Once i only thought SAAB made cars... UGLY cars. But i heard they where good quality, and some of the best you can get.
Now i've found out they also make aircrafts, ships, subs, weaponry and other type of military equipment. They where FAR bigger and better than i could ever had imagined.

I wonder if the sail design is purely for aesthetics or if it actually surveys a purpose.
We were told that the sail is designed that way in order to deflect the sonar waves underwater (the same way aircraft have specific shapes to deflect radar waves).

It looks like an impressive sub with great features but why are there no customers outside of Sweden?
Customers other than Sweden want the VLS variant with Tomahawk Cruise missiles but they have no guarantee that they will actually get those from the US. A kilo sub with Kalibr support is still a better alternative in my opinion 🚀
Im no expert but ive heard there was interest, however Swedish laws restrict who Swedish companies can sell to...
The Royal Netherlands Navy is also looking if a few of these will join the fleet. I personally would love to see that happen. We'd actually get a longer version with extra modules.
It's a new product and not in the market yet.
From the beginning Norway and Denmark was part of this but they dropped out.
Denmark decided to shut down submarine capability and Norway changed their specification to something simpler.
Many small and medium navies are interested in A26 sub.
They have three sizes and A26 is the medium version.
SAABs largest version can carry cruise missiles.
Would be a great improvement for our Brazilian Navy, together with the Grippen fighters.
Even more if build here with a technology transfer agreement.
To acquire an effective defense of our 8.500.000 kilometres of sea shore and our 200 miles of exclusive economic zone, we need a sizeable fleet.

They missed out on a HUGE deal.
They were Rejected by the Government The previous Sub the collins was chosen by a Labour Government
Current Liberal Government could not do the same after critising the decision

the Indian Navy should acquire the A26 & if they don't it'll be a big mistake!!! but in order to fulfill Indian Navy requirements certain elements of the A26 has to be modified & upgraded!!! firstly the A26 has to be much larger in size both in terms of it's length & beam which in turn would mean an increase in draft & height as well (to keep the proportions in check due to the larger size)!!! the beam (width) of the A26 has to be increased inorder to accommodate 2 rows of 5-cell VLS (total 10+1) running parallel next to each other in the front (bow) to midship section of the submarine!!! & this will be in addition to a further 2 parallel rows of 3-cell VLS (total 6) in rear aft part of the submarine!!! not to forget the 5 torpedo launch tubes in the front nose of the submarine without which it'll never be a submarine!!! furthermore the A26 will displace around 8,300 ton to 12,460 tons & it'll be powered by a new fuel cell i-HYBRID propulsion system!!! 90% of the A26 systems has to be fully automated requiring no human intervention even in case of mild emergencies, which is why on board complement in the A26 will be no more than 360 - 420 trained crew!!! a spec ops version of the A26 would be a game changer, where few of the larger 12,460 ton A26 will be equipped with a detachable deep sea submersible that'll be carried on the rear stern section of the hull but only when & if necessary!!! this submersible will be electric powered & will accommodate 18-20 marines with full tactical gear & equipment!!! the submersible will be armed with 2 heavy weight guided torpedoes & will have a maximum range of 30 miles!!! like any submarine it too will have a retractable periscope!!! the price of the India specific version of the A26 should be no more than €330 mn euros each!!!

As much as A26 is very modern and capable design, it is also very specialised to specific Baltic Sea environment .
To be successful on global scale , Saab needs to have bigger model in range of 3500-4500 ton.

China propably already have secured the plans for these submarines and their subsystems...or they are working on it. Because Swedes are so lax with their industrial espionage security, they will succeed. Europe is being mined of technology. The technology the chinese do steal from other nations, they replicate, but often they fail to understand the minutia of this technology since these products are innovated. To innovate you have to spend years and years of working with, and expanding existing technology and understand its inherent qualities, its benefits as well as issues. Then you rethink everything you thought you knew. Expanding and developing from exisiting technology is where the innovation happens. You can not innovate with copies. But its a nice looking submarine.
Actually it is the US and Israel that steal most European technology. There is a whole surveillance network that is tapped into the European communication networks.

That torpedo might have a chance to do something with a nuclear charge installed...maybe, its fast yes, but its loud, blind, unguided and with less range than other models. Try to hit a sub moving underwater with something like that. Its more of an area denial weapon and would need a tremendous warhead to actually damage such a target with the range of its blast. A better effect is achieved with rocket carried torpedoes that fly the torp through air to the potential area and they conduct the further search after being dropped there.
Shkval torpedo is utterly useless, blind as a bat!
Shkval is not very suitable weapon against submarine. It have short range and cant create his cavitation bubble under aprox. 30 m depth. Its weapon mainly against ships.

@@toggtlas7099 Yes I know. The expanded name I posted was what SAAB auto was called in jest. Every automaker had a name Garage Mechanics Companion, Damaged On Delivery Go Easy, Found On Road Dead. SAAB did make good cars for decades.
@@toggtlas7099 Actually SAAB wasn't in the submarine business until recently. Kockums used to be owned by Thyssen, the German steel company. The Swedish government forced Thyssen to sell Kockums to SAAB over an allegation that Thyssen was favoring German submarines over Swedish.

Given that the US had to borrow a Swedish submarine for years to train and expand their capability to detect it speaks volumes about how good they are. This is the next generation which will be even better.
