What Bioshock Infinite COULD Have Been

  • I break down the 2010 gameplay demo of Bioshock Infinite in order to determine what aspects of the game that were advertised are missing from the final game, and how they would have made a great game amazing if they were included.

Seeing this footage again makes me think "This could be done". A big open world with lots of verticality, emergent gameplay and a colorful art style. That's basically Breath of the wild. Obviously Bioshock and Zelda are two very different games and Nintendo has a lot more time, money and experience to make such a game, but this demo isn't a pipe dream. The next bioshock could be like this.

To me the biggest letdown was not the plot but the dumbed down mechanics.
Compare the map of the 2011 demo with any level in the final game.
No verticality, no complex skyrail system, it is basically juat a corridor shooter with a few sections where the rails are used and even then most of the rails never go as high or as far as the ones in that demo.

What we need is a remake of bioshock infinite; giving us players what was shown in the 2011 gameplay trailer not the 2010 one since the 2011 one had high vertical levels with roller coaster skylines and it can be done because it’s 2023 and the PC’s and consoles we have now are twice as powerful than the Xbox 360 and PC’s that were around back then, a whopping 12 years and in recent times video games have been getting remakes so really it’s not a stretch to say and to hope that eventually bioshock infinite gets a remake with the skyscrapers and vertical levels

Good video, but when Bookers grabs the Murder of Crows Vigor, grabs the guys shotgun, and catches the artillery guns shellfire that’s all one vigor called Telekinesis. Unfortunately it got cut, it was also a holdover from the very first BioShock. Sucks that they cut it out of the game cause in the first BioShocks it’s the funnest power to use. The way way in which it was seemingly expanded here in this demo makes its removal all the more disheartening.

I definitely prefer the gameplay of the 2011 demo to this one. This one is fabulous, don't get me wrong, but just the level of choice is amazing in the 2011 demo. And that demo still had the type of sprawling "realistic" Skylines you praised this one for instead of the looped versions in battle arenas.
I also am not sure this version of Elizabeth's powers would have been great either. It basically turns fights into QuickTime events to match a Vigor with whatever Elizabeth was giving you. That doesn't sound fun to me. I think the Tears are better, especially in the 2011 demo.
Bioshock 2 had the Songbird problem with the Big Sister. They wanted there to only be one, so you'd fight her and but she'd always get away, just like you're proposing with Songbird. Apparently that just wasn't very satisfying so they made Big Sister not a specific character but just what Rapture did with any Little Sister who lived long enough to stop being a good Adam factory.

@@peepeepoopooguy6969 Yet, according to the final game, there's over 122 realities where Booker failed at his mission, and we do later see a version of Elizabeth in her beta design. So this means that the whole "Booker is Comstock" twist still applies to these early versions, which, according to the final game, are indeed canon. Which means that there was a version of Booker who was converted to a religion and changed his name to Comstock, yet instead of proclaiming himself as a prophet, he became a gonvernment official (Maybe because of the Battle of Wounded Knee) and ends up funding the Columbia project.

Funnily enough, I was discussing how this game turned out with my mother the other day. We both have our crafting hobbies, and the thread that brought me to the subject was the sort of single-minded fixation on a particular aspect of any project; and how that can make or break it. I remember that there seemed to be that sort of fixation with Elizabeth, and I think that is what ultimately held the game back.
It's a fun game, and I'm not going to knock the devs for hitting a stumbling block, but Infinite could have been so much more than what it was.

Pretty sure getting this to run on an Xbox 360 and released on time would require a lot more time and different hardware. So compromises were made for consoles. This happens with most major game development without unlimited funding for perpetual development like Star Citizen.

  • @yuishishido8780

As fun as the game we got was, it did feel lacking.
Bioshock 1 & 2 you had choices regarding morality and survival, while not major plot changers, these choices shaped the world around you. How people respond to you, the ending you got.
Infinite, doesn’t really have these choices. It has a couple of them but he story remains unchanged outside of a line or two of dialogue immediately after the event.
In Bioshock 2 you can be completely merciful, do whatever you must to survive (harvest little sisters but spare major characters), be kind yet vengeful (spare little sisters but kill major characters). Or be completely merciless. And the ending, game and atmosphere changes accordingly.
No matter what happens in infinite you’ll always get the same end and follow the same story. The other two gave a bit of repayablity as you could go back and use different approaches and see different outcomes.
With any luck given time they may come back with a remade or updated version like they did the other two, and change things to reflect newer systems and their capabilities like RE does with their remakes. Perhaps, there is a slim chance we may one day receive this version.

The number of games limited because consoles couldnt handle it. Damn shame. A double edged sword. On the other hand Sony/ms refusing pc to have better graphics because they cant have a competing platform be better.
The world design and political aspects, storytelling were so much better. A shame it was lost.
This is the remake we need if any.
Current remake remaster culture ruins the art direction of the original because people dont understand what makes the original good anymore.
The add stuff for the sake of it and showing off their egos.

it sucks to see people like this guy bashing the bioshock infinite we got, and preaching about how much the demo's were superior. the xbox 360 could not handle most of what irrational planned for infinite. it's not like they had infinite time, and money to release the game when better hardware came out. yes the game we got was not the one we were promised. but irrational had no other choice but to massively downgrade it, if they wanted to see the game actually get released. large video game studios need money to operate like everything else. so at end of the day, the people in charge have to make sacrifices to hopefully keep their business running.
