  • Particle board has carried a negative connotation in the US. Is often viewed as an inferior building product.
Particle board is an engineered product manufactured from wood particles, such as wood chips and shavings, which are mixed with binding solution and then compacted into shape using extremely high pressure. Since it is essentially made from recycled wood materials, Particle board is not only environmentally friendly but more cost effective than using plywood.

Particle boards are not good for screws. The screws don't hold up as good, and if you are trying to put a screw too close to the outer edges, it will likely crush the edge if you drive the screw too far in. The screw also doesn't catch as well as in wood. Water is the greatest enemy to particle boards. If exposed to water, the boards will swell up and rot. I prefer a fibre board instead of particle board for strength, but it is equally vulnerable to water. But they both have their own uses. Plywood is obviously better than both, but pure wood is better than anything to work with.

First time that I have heard that particle board is more water-resistant than plywood. Are you conflating particle board with moisture resistant medium density fiberboard?

MDF core melamine is the only one I use. Super heavy but very stable.

Sorry my friend. I think particleboard is NOT more water resistance than plywood. I have made some tests with the oposite result. check it out. maybe run an water test too, lets share information. Thanks for the video.

Following your suggestion we´ve made a water test video. Feel free to have a look: czcams.com/video/J3f9ey6XQFo/video.html

That’s sophisticated chemically designed yet particle board design is not often trustworthy. Water travels up a 250 foot tall tree making it grow and stay beautiful. Wood supplies making a house from over a century ago can survive rain leaks with basic repairs and paint. A 1902 house I grew up in had 2x4 that was 2” by 4” and strong.
As I was taught by a PhD chemist : Tung Oil chemically bonds into the wood and makes it waterproof, so well to apply for making furniture wood beautiful and durable and it is organic. That’s his and my furniture repair and new projects supply. Most particle board is hardly better than ash like sawdust with fluid glue and isn’t water resistant as well as a college book is. Only some projects are appropriate with particle board but not in a bathroom or kitchen since any water leaks and the steam from a dishwasher destroys it.
Wood is not appropriate as calling it a renewable energy source when your healthy maple syrup trees are burned like in Vermont for energy use. A century later it is then grown back. CO2 is a blanket effect not hot like methane is because it burns in the water or atmosphere then it becomes CO2. Organic debris washed into lakes or rivers are eaten by microorganisms and they fart methane. Look up how much energy heat a tablespoon amount of methane will release. Trees and even just branches from windstorms can make the best possible furniture for a lifetime so let’s take a next mindset approach. Ciao.

Surely that cheap Ikea furniture is much lighter than solid plywood, definitely not heavier!

You state that, 60 and 90 pound board refers to the pounds per sq foot of pressure used in manufacture....I had always thought it was the density of the material. I have checked several sources (US Forest Service & Washington State Universtity) and they all say that this is indeed the case that particle board is rated in density/wieght per sq foot symbolized as lb/ft3. Please feel free to correct me just be so kind as to mention your source.

At the top, you say square foot. At the bottom, you say cubic foot (as signified by ft3). Could you please clarify?

Plywood way much better, more water resistance, more strong and durable.
