  • Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, was born on the 18 March 1848, she was the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
In her public life, she was a strong proponent of the arts and higher education and of the feminist cause. Her early life was spent moving among the various royal residences in the company of her family.
When her father died in December 1861, the court went into a long period of mourning.
She was an able sculptor and artist, and several of her sculptures remain today.
She was also a supporter of the feminist movement.
Before her marriage, Louise served as an unofficial secretary to the Queen from 1866 to 1871.
The question of Louise's marriage was discussed in the late 1860s. Suitors from the royal houses of Prussia and Denmark were suggested, but Victoria did not want her to marry a foreign prince, and therefore suggested a high-ranking member of the British aristocracy.
Despite opposition from members of the royal family, Louise fell in love with John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, the heir of the Duke of Argyll. Victoria consented to the marriage, which took place on 21 March 1871. After a happy beginning, the two drifted apart, possibly because of their childlessness and the Queen's constraints on their activities

I hope every single scandal was true and that she never gave Victoria a single second of rest. Good on her!

She's my fav of Victoria and Albert's children. Can't believe she lived to 91, what a life! She got to witness four new monarchs after the death of her mother, the abdication crisis, women's right to vote, WWI and the beginnings of WWII! She was talented and really stood up to Queen Victoria and for what she believed in. I wish her father lived to see her talented artwork, he'd be so proud.

What’s incredible (talking of her age) is that her younger brother Arthur lived to be the same age literally to the VERY day, dying, like Louise, at the age of 91 years 8 months and 16 days. What are the chances of that?

@@gerardmackay8909 wow, that is interesting and I didn’t know that. I believe she grew closer to him later in once their other siblings all passed. The family seem to have weird coincidences like that. For instance, Princess Alice dying on the same day as her father 17 years after he did.

@@feyrol42 yes I’m not superstitious but that family is certainly a swirl of odd coincidences. One of the most interesting of them is Bertie’s near death encounter with Typhoid (the disease that killed his father). Albert died on December 14th 1861 and Bertie’s bout of typhoid reached its climax exactly 10 years later on December 14th 1871 (against all expectations the fever broke that night and he survived). After poor Alice’s death 7 years later that family must have looked upon December 14th as a cursed date. Fascinating stuff

Thanks for bringing history alive for me. I am glad to have found you. Lindsay Holiday was my top to go favorite historian. Now I consider your channel a notch above hers.

I love how she was thoroughly obsessed with her weight and health...but totally addicted to cigarettes! So funny. I thoroughly enjoyed this video - i watched it several times - so much in it. As such tho, my only wish as the video goes along, you mention the year/date more frequently for specific events, as it helps keeping up with the life sequence a bit easier. Not enough is said about Victorias daughters and grandchildren esp the lesser known ones. Lastly, its interesting the late Queen denied many DNA requests of ancestors. Prob a good idea...its likely there would be more than one surprise in the results.

The only really truly beautiful child of Victoria and intelligent and artistic too. The only child who didn’t have a child of her own (if you ignore gossip to the contrary) mainly because she married the very homosexual Lord Lorne

She's my favorite. A flapper before the flapper age! She did her own thing and I love her for that. Pisces here also.
