The Tragic Life Of Elisabeth Of Austria

- Elisabeth of Austria was one of the most powerful monarchs of the 19th century. Remarkably beautiful, Elisabeth, nicknamed Sisi, defied Austrian court traditions. She traveled often and became a beloved figure in both Austria and Hungary. Elisabeth was very concerned with her looks; she engaged in strange beauty rituals and aggressive exercise routines. Elisabeth's iconoclastic ways resulted in her bizarre death at the hands of an anarchist.

It's not always good to be the queen, and Sisi was a prime example of that!
Even in Belgium i grew up watching the Sissi movies on tv every year around christmas time. As a kid i remember it being almost like a disney story, the beautiful young princess getting married etc.
It's weird how I'd never heard of Sisi until a couple years ago when I got really into reading about 19th century eastern/central Europe. A shame, her life is fascinating if terribly depressing - those Wittlesbachs never seem to have a good time, do they?
Have you read mikhail lermontov's a hero of our time?
I recommend it
as an Austrian living in Vienna, with roots in Budapest, Hungary, I approve this message
Ok... lol
My grandmother was from Vienna. Ich liebe Austria.
Approve what message though ? 🤣You just wanted to say you're an Austrian with Hungarian roots. I can understand. It's cool. I also can't resist sometimes to comment like this on video related to where I'm from.
@@_sayan_roy_ you are not wrong Sir! therefore I also approve your message 😁 greetings from Grinzing
Love Austria from America!
🇦🇹❤️🇺🇸 Wanna visit you guys one day!
If I remember correctly, the assassin had planned to kill the Duke of Orleans, but failed when his target left earlier than expected. He then targeted the Empress after hearing she was residing in a hotel in the same area.
9:07 Elisabeth might have had Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Shirley Manson of Garbage (one of my favorite bands) had that.
"I would spend two hours crying in the toilet - and whatever the result, I always thought I looked disgusting. I would look in the mirror every morning and be upset." - Shirley Manson
I've been watching the series about her on Netflix, which is a dramatic series so takes artistic liberties. It's interesting that she isn't as well known as Catherine the Great, especially since it was her family ruling right before WWI
What show?
@@elizabethmartin6707it’s called The Empress. It’s in German but with subs it’s soo good!!
@@TheZinger14 thank you!
Not as known?? She is one of the most famous royals of Europe ever 😂 when someone has a huge wedding dress people will even say “she had one of those Sissi dresses.” There’s also movies about her which have been massive hits for decades in many European countries.
A+ video!
Fascinating video, very interesting seeing how she is still influential today!
How about one on Lady Jane Grey? The story was so good, my wife named her cat after the 9-day Queen.
They posted a video about her a year ago.
😂😂😂
@@tomahawk8133 oh thanks! I’ll look for it on their homepage
I remember reading an article about Princess Sissi and I found out that her aunt Princess Sophia made her life miserable. An example is when she took Sissi's firstborn from her right after she gave birth and kept the child away from her.
Thanks for her story.
Nice pronounciation of Elisabeth! 😍
Can you do a video on when did it start and why humans have last names?
Very interesting short summary of Elizabeth's life. However a few flaws. Firstly Elizabeth did not have an affair with count Andrassy as she hated making love. Therefore she encouraged her husband to have a longtime affair with Katharina Schratt, who was as well kind of a soul mate to the emperor as his wife was unable to do so. The story of the death of crown prince Rudolf and baroness Mary Vetsera is all but a Romeo and Julia story. Mary was one of Rudolfs many affairs and there is more than one reason to believe that he already had enough from her and wanted closure. Some historians believe that the journey to Mayerling should bring this affair to an end. Whatever happened there, it was no death out of love without fulfillment (maybe but just maybe on her side). There are many theories what may have happened at Mayerling on this could winter night but all have one in common: The crown prince of Austria-Hungary did not die for love!
Thank you for this representation
She’s beautiful-In body and in soul! And a one fine ruler! ❤️
Psychosomatic symptoms? Definitely! I have them as well and man does it feel good to get away from your stressors. Those doctors did a huge favor to Sisi prescribing her vacation 😊
Also I have a theory that her son ended up offing himself because of his upbringing. I’ve heard many children who end up mental health issues because their mothers do not care for them (while still being physically around).
Also, if not this suggestion, can you do a video on what life is like for a pageant winner?
Like who, Jon-Benet Ramsey?
@@mikememine1423 Not necessarily. Any pageant winner for Miss America, Miss USA
8:39 "Here I Go Again" by White Snake is an awesome music video!
We used to listen to that song all the time when I was a freshman at Doane University.
Very interesting video! However, allow me to make a correction: princess Sophie, later Archduchess Sophie, was not a princess of Greece and Denmark, as mentioned in 0:51. This is a completely different royal line
She truly was a Queen
Would love to hear one on king George the 3rd😊
6:33 In reference to psychosomatic...
The music video "Breathe" by The Prodigy is fantastic!
The lead singer overdosed... such a fool
Thanks for this! 👑 #WeirdHistory #EmpressElisabethOfAustria #ElisabethOfAustria #Austria
Pretty lady. Thanks for explaining the long hair. I started to notice that as more pictures rolled.
I like the comparison that Empress Sisi was the Lady Di of her day
"Cirque Du Back Yard" 😂
Early upload this time . Glad
As of German and Austrian descent.. I feel really connected to her in a strange way… I’m OBSESSED w my hair and my appearance.. I thought I was the only peers in of Germanic blood who did the same thing? 😂 Anyone feel the same you
Maybe do a video on the Winchester mystery house?
San Jose CA...been there. Really bizarre place
Funny thought while watching this… they wouldn’t have any idea how we can see their photos on technological devices.
When they said " So she would crush on Tiktok", i almost deleted myself
I always feel such disgust for the way so many princesses and queens were treated, I know that in many ways their lives were much better compared to the average person of their times but I still
Being a royal wife is often tough, but poor Sisi, had it really bad. The first time I read about her history, at school in A Level European History, I felt so sad for her. 😥
I never thought I would hear of a 3rd Queen Elizabeth.
Anarchists were like nobody has the right to rule over anybody.
Yes that is fairly obvious
No one has the right to rule over anyone else .
At 4;52 You show Ludwig I. of Bavaria, not Ludwig II., the grandson.
She eats like my sister-in-law lol
10:02 On the tv series Into The Badlands, all the rulers of their region are called Barons regardless of their gender.

Can you please do a video about the Dublin whiskey fire in 1875?
I'd like to know about Amy Robsart.
😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏
A lot of the marital and familial arrangements remind me of the film Pride and Prejudice (2005), which I just watched again last night.
Fantastic film!
Pride, Prejudice and Zombies is an even better film
Have you ever heard of reading? Books have a lot of information and stories, like pride and prejudice... look in to it
@@mikememine1423 Pride and Prejudice is an excellent book, I read the book and then watched the film.
The BBC version is the best 1. I think it's closest to the book.
All of us have danced with death, but no one like Elisabeth!
*points excitedly* I understood that reference!
Wow...! Anyone else kind of seeing the similarities between Elisabeth and "Cinderella?" 😳
"...who put his whole Andrassy into everything." LOLLLLL
I knew a Beth of Australia who was pretty hungry.
Being royalty doesn't always live up good as everyone thinks
I don't Think I've ever talked to anyone who said they would like to be a member of the royal family. Seems like it would be the worst life ever.
Thanks.

Man their family tree is like a merry go round😅
That tree has no branches 😭... Grows straight up
I guess it wasn't common knowledge back then that being 96 lbs. at 5'8" would cause her beloved hair to thin considerably. But, maybe they had an early version of Rogaine 🤔.
Remember reading this on Wikipedia.
Same! I had did some reading on her and her favorite cousin, I forgot his name.
she died in a horrific way, i think Franz Joseph would have not entered WWI if she was still alive in 1914
Well...
And her little sister perished in the fire of the Bazar de la charité, in Paris…
Why the loud & distracting music choices?
The Netflix series is pretty good & the film was just okay.
Great choice of music for a land locked country.
Technically, the wife of an emperor/king doesn’t reign. She is just the wife of the emperor/king and mother of the ruler’s children. Same role as the late Prince Phillip, the late QEII’s husband. She was Empress of Austria/Queen of Hungary, but Franz Joseph was the one with the power (allegedly… he was a mama’s boy and let his mother have too much say in ruling Austria). If Elisabeth did have power, she could’ve told her monster-in-law to take a hike and shove it, lol.
Sisi, Lady Di and Marie Antoinette have one thing in common..they all broke out from the golden cage in order to be more free....i understand them and its kinda remarkable.
She didn't eat meat, but liked to put raw meat on her face? How peculiar...
I feel like I'm spoiling the show The Empress for myself
It doesn’t have true facts- it’s like a “fantasy” mainly but has the “bones” of the true story. Its soooo good!! Highly recommend!
She's a Saint!
I just checked - she is my 8th cousin four times removed
The CZcams channel REACT has a video challenge about the etiquette that aristocrats like Elisabeth likely used at the time, it is called "Gen Z Boys Vs. Girls: Ultimate Etiquette Challenge."
It is a very helpful video for understanding it.

Having your life "mapped" out without input, must be like a jail sentence for anyone. I'm going to try sleeping with the nightgown soaked in vinegar. It might even keep Dracula away.
Hey y°all 😮
Some believe Sisi had Npd and Bipolar and Anorexia but the family inbreeding didn't help her either

*points to avatar* I'm a huge fan the of the German language musical about Sisi so I know my Elisabeth history lol😅
I will say Sophie gets a tiny it of a bad rap. She was controlling and kinda bitchy yeah, but Sisi being a literally teenager when she had her kids, she may have been justified in taking charge of the kids.
Not as famous? Not everyone is English/American you know 😂 I've always known about Sisi but only recently learned about Queen Victoria.
She is a ravishing hottie! 😍

Is it American or what that the word is it regime not regiment.
Well that’s an eating disorder if I’ve ever seen one 8:24 I get why she didn’t want people taking pictures of her. Sucks to be uncomfortable in / unaccepting of your own body. Imagine having to gestate and pop out a third/fourth(?) child in order to get your husband to make you queen. Yikes!
Thanks, I hope we get more videos about women!
Youre showing unrelated medieval portraits of other royals like you don't care why???
I love to videos on European aristocracy
In-Laws. Am I right!?!?!?
Um, why are you claiming, at the beginning of the video, that Empress Elisabeth was a "ruler" who "reigned"? She was not a ruler at all and was only married to the actual ruler, Emperor Franz Joseph I.
