    i did same thing using different 5v power supply from usb chargers up to 2A each, and used 2 TP4056 for each charger to balance batteries up to 2A, i use this to balance Ebike and electric bikes batteries, and really worked great for about a year, did one to balance up to 20s battery packs :)

    wow Sorin your channel has grown since i 1st subscribed!! May it keep growing... class video!! just one thing the 2nd connection diagram you showed the TP4056 module's didn't have discharge protection just over voltage protection. there two types!! the better one has more chips(3 chips) on the board. for those of you new two this module & are looking them up/buying online, get the one with 3 chips on the board because it has the over & under charge protection. hope this helps!!!!

    • @temelius86
      @temelius86 Před 4 lety

      Yes, there're two type of this modules. The modules in the first diagram have also discharge protection and in the second diagram have not, because there are no output pins on them. They are only for charging process. The first module that never works again after short circuit can be broken, because the other three modules are still working. I wonder where is the output voltage of this module supply from. Is it show 5v when power in and the battery connected and 4,2-3,7v when only the battery connected, not the power in?

  • @shawnsmakershop2099
    @shawnsmakershop2099 Před 4 lety +1

    SORIN! You stole my idea for dedicated output windings! Great minds think alike I guess.... I was planing to use a toroidal transformer. I'll subscribe:-)

  • @rhiantaylor3446
    @rhiantaylor3446 Před 2 lety

    I was thinking of building something like this using hand-wound secondaries on a toroidal transformer. Benefit is that each "cell" is isolated from others so the outputs can be connected in a series string as in a Ebike battery. Also allows the voltage into each TP4056 to be kept to the minimum to achieve a full charge, to reduce dissipation.

  • @valentinpopov1114
    @valentinpopov1114 Před 4 lety

    I think the idea is great and helpful.
    I planed to build this for a while...
    I am using imax b3 that work probably exactly the same way, but i dont think I can hook them up in series.
    This thing wouldn't be a problem if you have 5 4s chargers... Just to connect them in series to get a 20s for a fast ebike for example.
    The con is... Power consumption for thee transfermer... I was liking forward to see you measuring consumption. Before the transformer and after it and... And after the full bridge rectifier...

    I did that same circuit that you did, but with independent 5v switching power supplies, the problem is that when one battery cell goes below 2.5v with a discharging current over 1 amp, the TP4056 blows up, it will overheat and burn out, the charging light stays on and the 5v input now outputs the voltage of the battery, like what happens when you do the short circuit.

    Get yourself some Polyester Tape to use instead of the masking tape.
    It's the yellow tape used in switch mode power supplies, comes in different widths, and is cheap.
    Using masking tape is just a bad idea, it comes loose after a while as the glue gives up.

    • @rpbajb

      hi. you can use DC-DC isolator converters, but they are very inefficient, I don't recommend it. I would prefer a 18V (or higher) solar panel, or more in parallel. a MPPT controller or a step down converter with current limiting (this is less efficient). a 4S battery pack with balance charging. and finally another step down converter for your load.

    Great video, great job! You have a fantastic channel! I have a question for builds like this, with 18650 cells. Most charging chip-sets (tp4056, dw01 etc) will charge the cell at 4.2V (which is the top limit according to the cell's specs) and some even more (4.25 or even 4.30) putting a very high strain on the cell.. since the charging chip's parameters cannot be changed, if i wanted to finish the charge cycle at 4.15V just to feel safer, if i put a resistor between one side of the cell and the charging board, would that make it stop the charging at lower voltages than 4.2V..?
    And the same for discharge.. is there a way to increase the lower cut off voltage to 2.7 or even higher so that the cells don't get so stressed? I don't care if I loose some of their capacity.. just want to feel a bit safer for their parameters...

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  Před 4 lety +1

      hi. I don't think it will work with resistors. resistors will decrease the current. if you connect a resistor in series with the cell and charge it, the charging current will be lower. and near the end of the charging cycle, the charging current will be very low, so the difference of voltage before and after the resistor will be very small. it will charge the cell with a lower current longer time, until the cell voltage is 4.2V. and for the discharge cycle I don't think the protection IC will read correctly the voltage and current, so it may not work correctly. if you want to power you project with 1 cell, there must be other solutions. for example you can use this module for over-discharge protection:
      www.aliexpress.com/item/32788948905.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.266c7eee3jze8x&algo_pvid=acf82334-569f-4c28-b4ae-57b0187fa6dd&algo_expid=acf82334-569f-4c28-b4ae-57b0187fa6dd-36&btsid=0ab6f81615901736350356638e1753&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_
      Over discharge voltage:2.54±0.1V it's not a big difference, but it is a little better than TP4056. or if you need 5V for your project I recommend this module:
      www.aliexpress.com/item/32885492747.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dr4JFVo
      it charges the cell to exactly 4.2V and it has over-discharge protection at 2.9 - 3.0V. I made a review of it and I will post it on my Patreon page soon.

Theese use step-down to regulate the charging current, so you can feed them with up to 18v, are also programmable, and won't heat up nearly as much as the tp4056. Nice and much appreciated....but a question here why haven't you mention that you are showing two different board in different schematic.....????? asking because its confusing and will not work if picked wrong board

      hi. you are right. in one of the schematics I use the charging modules without over-discharge protection. I forgot to mention that.

    Great job Sorin, have you had a chance to check out my video doing the active balancer using tp4056? I made a 10s charger. So far it’s working pretty well and charges each cell using 1 amp per. It was a fun build that’s for sure!!!

      @@Sorin_DIY That is pretty cool!!! Mine has transformers....LOL, just a whole bunch of mini 5V ones...LOL. I wasn't looking for a BMS like your build. Just a way to charge some of the 10S battery packs I'll be building. I looked everywhere for a cheap alternative and couldn't find one, so I decided I might as well build one myself. With this one, the best way to use it is to charge the pack to around 75-80% full and then plug into the active ballancer I made. It can charge the pack from 0 to full, I just found it faster to do it the other way. Love your video and your work!!

    That was fun tp4056 in series :-) Is there a way to do the isolation without a transformer? For use in a solar setup? Since that is all DC we would have to make AC and than go back to dc.

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  Před 3 lety

      hi. another option is to use DC-DC isolated converters, but they have a low efficiency so it's not recommended. you can use a solar panel and a CN3791 solar charger and a 6V/9V/12V solar panel for each lithium cell. this method will have a better efficiency, but will cost a lot. the most efficient way is to use a solar charge controller. and the cheapest way is to use a buck/boost converter and a BMS board.

      @@Sorin_DIY Hi. thx for your reply. I am just fooling arround with 4 old solarpanels on my shed old batteries from where I can get them. I am using buck converters to get the voltage down. I have 2 42 volts and 2 +- 35 volts panels.
      The are just stupid voltages giving me headaches.
      My e-mopet has a 48 volt battery (which means it is 54 volts) and the charger can peak to 60 volts. Most you tube examples go to 30/35 volta examples max andso far I am to big a electronics noob try to change the exmaples into something that works for me. Lots of magic smoke. Today I tried to make a flyback buck converter to convert 54 volts to 12 for the electric moped. But burned loads of mosfets and 3904's Try again tomorrow :)

    Next time try to make a battery tester which tells you the capacity of an older battery (like the one you have but diy) it will be hard but I think you can do it!

    How can we raise the discharge cutoff to 3.0V (from 2.5v)?? It would also be nice to lower max charge from 4.2V to 4.0.. possible?

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't think that is possible, these features are controlled by the chip. you can try to add a low value resistor between the battery positive terminal and the module. this may work for the over discharge protection, because under the load, the module will read a different voltage value than the cell really has. you can try with different resistors of a few ohms and different loads.

    • @mwint1982
      @mwint1982 Před 4 lety

      @@Sorin_DIY there is such a high demand for it. You would think the chip manufacturers would listen. 2.5V is stressful for these cells

    Hi! Have you thought about using DC-DC Isolator instead of a big transformer ? Like B0505S (Max 1W out) or more powerfull?

    • @Sorin_DIY
      @Sorin_DIY  Před 4 lety +1

      hi. isolated converters will work, but they are not efficient or powerful. for 1W you can charge the cell with maximum 0.2A. so you need to modify the programmable resistor on the TP4056 module to always charge with max 0.2A, which will take a lot of time for big capacity cells. for these isolated converters you always need to have a load connected of minimum 20mA and max
      200mA, otherwise they will burn. other disadvantage is that they usually get hot when used. you can find isolated converters a bit more powerful, of 2W, but they suffer from similar disadvantages.

      @@Sorin_DIY Thanks for the answer! Appart B0505S, better spec DC-DC Isolator are expensive!
