History of Russia Part 2: Birth of a European Power

  • Epic History TV's history of Russia continues! Emerging from the Time of Troubles, Russia fights back against foreign invaders, as Prince Pozharksy and Kuzma Minin liberate Moscow from Polish forces. Russia's assembly, the Zemsky Sobor, turns to a 16 year old boy, Mikhail Romanov, for leadership. He and the early Romanovs oversee a turbulent period of war, reform and rebellion: all Russian peasants are made serfs by the terms of the Sobornoye Ulozheniye, while Patriarch Nikon's religious reforms split the Russian Orthodox Church between Reformers and Old Believers. The Thirteen Years War (1654 - 67) against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth brings Smolensk and Kiev under Russian control, as Cossack renegade (and folklore hero) Stenka Razin leads revolt in the south.
    In 1689, Peter the Great seizes power from his half-sister, Princess Regent Sofia. Peter is determined to make Russia a great European power, and travels to the Dutch Republic and England to study the latest developments in science and shipbuilding. He wages successful wars against the Ottoman Empire, acquiring the Black Sea port of Azov, and defeats Sweden in the Great Northern War, winning one of Russia's most famous victories at Poltava in 1709. He builds a new capital, St.Petersburg, as well as a Russian navy, and reforms education, industry and government. Not without internal opposition, Peter's boundless energy transforms Russia.
    The second half of Russia's 18th century is dominated by female rulers. Under the reign of Empress Anna Ioannovna, Vitus Bering charts the coast of Alaska and discovers the Aleutian Islands. Empress Elizabeth leads Russia into the Seven Years War against Frederick the Great, with Russian victory at Kunersdorf in 1759, and oversees construction of St.Petersburg's stunningly lavish and expensive Winter Palace. While Peter III falls victim to a conspiracy by his wife Catherine and army officers, leading to his own death, and the reign of Catherine the Great.

In Copenhagen always wandered many Russian nobles and members of tsar dinasty all 19 century. In 18 century Denmark was place of exile for deposed dynastic line of Ivan VI and Anna Ioannovna. Great video, but there's one request. Please evaluate the history very carefully when you reach the revolution and especially the Second world war.
      These periods really hurt the Russian audience, especially when the author's position is reduced to the repetition of Hollywood films - as the stupidest and thoroughly false "Enemy at the gate", for example.
      Your videos still seemed to me quite objective and accurate (some nuances to which you can find fault, crayons and do not deserve special attention, against the background of a fairly accurate narrative), and that's why I write to you with a request to continue exactly the same as it was until now. Perhaps for the first time I see in the video made in Western Europe or the United States accurate and fairly objective description of the history of Russia, without any politics and demonization. This is unexpected and allows us to hope that it is still possible to establish some kind of bridge for normal relations between us.
      Therefore, I would like to suggest some moments that may hurt the Russian audience. This description of the revolution (usually demoniziruet Communists as evil villains, that is completely wrong. Their ideology is unusual, but quite humane, and after declassified archives of the Ministry of defense and part of the archives of the KGB suddenly yyasnilos that stories about the terrible Gulag - just nonsense for the most part, the GULAG - is the usual system of execution of sentences, something between the usual prison or penal servitude, which was used in the United States in the same years)
      And one more thing - the description of the second world war. I would not like to see a common fake about the evil Commissars who for some reason are being driven unarmed soldiers at the machine guns. The ratio of losses between the Reich (including the Reich allies) and the USSR on the Eastern front is about 1 to 1.3, in figures of about 8.5 million against 10.5 million.
      But in General, the USSR lost about 27 million people, and the remaining 16.5 million are peaceful people killed by the Nazis.
      With respect, hope that you will remain objective and further.

      vinllga What sets Peter the Great apart from these rulers is that they led long established powerful states.France,for example,under Louis XIV,contained half the population of Europe and was the all powerful terror of the region.Peter had to create the infrastructure of the state;he built the navy,the standing army,cities,etc.In a span of about thirty years Peter transformed a medieval state into a modern power.I do not believe any European monarch can compare to this colossus!

    • @vinllga
      @vinllga Před 8 lety +2

      bedstuy rover common feature of all those rulers is that they have very much respect to sciences and arts, and made their states more powerful and influential, for example Phillip II can united all kingdoms of Spaine in one state, Carlos V conquered the South and Central America, Luis XIV and Peter t.G. established effective scientific development, beginning from Academies of sciences and universities in their countries. Peter, btw, was the member of Royal Society, and diploma of election he was handed personally by Isaac Newton!

The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620. In both Virginia and Massachusetts, the colonists flourished with some assistance from Native Americans.
