    Thanks you for your comments! I do my best to keep up with them for the first few days after a video comes out, but due to the volume of comments on all of my videos, and to the general hustle and bustle of life, I must give up the fight after a while. If you are leaving a question four or more days after a video comes out I can't guarantee I'll see it, but perhaps one of my other viewers knows the answer and can help out. Thanks in advance to those who contribute and share their knowledge. Cheers and stay safe everyone!

    Ooops, just as I released this video Kawasaki decided to update the KLX230 to the new KLX230 S. The new bike has two inches less travel but the new seat height is now 32.7 inches. Less capability but a more beginner friendly seat height. Might be worth the trade off.

      when i rode in the mountains with my klx 230 21' the extra suspension made a difference but if you have a skid plate and go slow its a great choice for shorter/lighter riders as the suspension wont sag as much. I think the new S model is pointed toward people under 170lb 5'7" cause if your lighter less suspension wont matter as much. for example im 5 '10" and 215lb geared up and i only bottom out under extreme circumstances

    I just bought a klx230, it's not my first bike. My first bike was a 450, tons of power everywhere when you need it, but, I realized I like to ride slow, I like to have a bike to explore and experience nature. I ended up riding my 450 between 10-20mph the whole time except for the highway. I sold the bike for a bike that would suit my needs better. It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow, this is completely true in my case. I'm loving the klx, it's simple, easy to work on, and completely bulletproof. I'm 6'2", 220 lbs and it hauls me around with no issue at all.

    I just bought a 2020 Suzuki DR200 a couple of months ago. It will do 65mph on the roads, and is a little tank in the woods. I'm new to dirt riding, (only about two years on a TTR 230) but the DR is a hoot!! This little monkey goes anywhere. Extremely maneuverable. I've had Harleys for about 30 years, and the DR is soooo nimble. You drop it, just pick it up and go again. Light weight as hell. Even with a full tank. Mine gets about 75 mpg, and has a 3.3 gallon tank You can go for ever on it!! It's a bit taller, but that's really not an issue. The perfect beginner bike for me. Have fun kids, and be careful out there.

    xt250 was my first. For a while I tried trading it in for something dual but lil bigger. I was going to lose so much money that it didn't make any sense. Now, that I test rode almost 50 road and off road bikes and also owning 1200cc yam brother, doesn't cross my mind to change it. I lost count of how many times I crashed that bike, straighten few controls and kept riding. Took it to places way above my skill level and even questioned my sanity. On highway, it keeps 70mph with no problem. May even hit 80 on lucky day. The only objection I have, it stalls suddenly with no warning whatsoever. It is also lil cramped for my 5'10". I have blast with that thing every time I sit on it.... And, if was good for Rambo (although older model) it sure is good for me :-)

    • @DaveZee01

      So much so, that if I had the choice of 2 identical bikes, I'd choose the one with a rear drum - for a light, non competitive, dual-purpose bike. Simpler, more reliable and lower maintenance. In fact, for my learner bike training school, I prefer a bike with a FRONT drum, where speeds are kept fairly low and too sharp front brakes are the main cause of injuries to learner riders and damages to my bikes.

    Lots of great choices, owned 3 (kept the TW200) and ridden all of them - lots of good points. Rode TW200 on Calabogie Boogie Dual Sport Aggressive Course - like a tractor & a goat! Can go 105 km/hr, but engine screams. TW really for off-road & short jaunts in town. TW200 has been to north & south pole (modified) - Japanese adv rider back in the day. XT250 a much better choice for road over TW200 plus has FI. KLX230, way more seat-of-the pants power than TW200 - & for 2022 Kawi coming out with KLX230 "S" model with seat 2 inches lower, but loses suspension travel. DR200 way lighter feel than KLX, lighter steering and more maneuverable than the KLX230 off-road. Again, how to choose, lol. Then when you got the Honda 300, I knew sooner or later you'd become an off-road addict. Once you start, it just can't stop. I started on a 150 dual-sport for a couple of years, but then I had to upgrade to a 250 Enduro that has to be maintain like a racehorse, and it can rip my face off. Off-road is very addictive, and once you start it's hard to stop.

  • @mikelobdell2666

    I appreciate the video.
    Personally, I ride the xt250. The people that I ride with ride the klx250 and the klx300. I am never unable to keep up and one of them is definitely more skilled than me. We all keep up on the highway as well. For taller riders, the klx is compelling with its plush suspension but the xt seems more nimble with a lower center of gravity. Over 10 pounds lighter as well. It also has the smallest turning radius of any dual sport that I am aware of. Half a gallon more fuel as well. The xt can't afford to give you the first three or four inches of plushness of the klx. With only seven in total, it's a little stiffer. When I ride the klx I am both impressed and disappointed compared to the xt. You gain and lose. The main reason that I rule it out for me is that with my 30-inch inseam and the roughness of what we ride I would be tipping over all the time with the klx. Not while riding but when having to stop in a rough section. As for the klx230 I have never even seen one but it would have to be pretty compelling for me to give up the xt for. I think that until you really put one through its paces it is easy to underestimate how great a bike the xt is. If you're taller the klx all the way. The honda is a non-starter for me. The klx just seems better.

    • @DifferentSpokesTV
      @DifferentSpokesTV  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks for the insights. It seems I have terrible timing as Kawasaki just released an updated KLX with 2 inches shorter suspension and lower seat. I guess they're figuring riders won't use the full suspension of the last model.

      @mikelobdell2666 Před 2 lety +3

      @@DifferentSpokesTV Yamaha has had the shorter rider market pretty much cornered so kawasaki probably wants a share of that. Why have two taller bikes in the stable. Unfortunately the 230 loses a lot of ground clearance in the deal. The xt has 11" whereas the new klx only has 8" I believe.
      I will add that my friend lowered the klx 300 and it feels pretty good. Suspension still feels better than the xt by a fair bit. Now I have something to think about.

Its nearly impossible to speed on the bike although I have tapped redline in 5th going 85mph. It will cruise 65 at full throttle and doesn't even care. It gets about 60 mpg at full throttle for a whole tank but in the city I have gotten upwards of 90mpg. I have put more miles on this bike than any bike I have previously owned all in 8 months. One disadvantage perhaps, the vibration is annoying until you get used to it, if you can. It stopped bothering me after 1500 miles.

    Wow, and all of these entry-level vehicle recommendations people always skip the TW and I think it’s absolutely one of the best options especially if you’re not tall. I’m tall enough I’ve driven full size bikes add an XL 600 but I still love the TW. I think these are all great choices. The one thing I would like to see, not necessarily in this category is for the manufactures to bring back to mid range bikes. I love the XT 250 but it’s just too gutless especially for a bigger rider, the XT 350 they used to have was awesome and I drove an XL 600 but it was a handful and it was really some thing you had to pay attention to to keep that front wheel on the ground. My dream bike is an 84 XL 350 with an electric starter added on and if it had a rear disc brake, even better. But they don’t have those options anymore, Suzuki had the DR 350 with the six speed the same as the Honda and it had some quirks I needed some upgrades but they replaced it with the DRZ 400 and put a five speed on it which means for slow technical stuff you have only first gear And that’s it and of course everything now is designed like a race bike for the most part so you have these very skinny hard uncomfortable seats which is fine if you’re standing all day but they’re doing sports. The Yamaha XT 250 and the TW 200 still have pretty comfortable seats that are wide enough that you can ride around for several hours. A CRF or a KLX is very uncomfortable after a while. That’s what I love about the 80s bikes, the Honda XL series and the XR 650 L had a nice big Cuz she seats on them they were thin enough to stand up I never noticed any problem with it but I wasn’t out there racing and doing motocross either I was doing woods and trails and small jumps and nothing crazy because it was a dual purpose I wanted something I could ride on the street and on some dirt roads and trails and it was perfect for that, and even on the more intense off-road the XR 350 was what I considered about perfect but I get that some people want more performance and grace type bike and that’s cool but on a dual sport they should offer an option with a comfortable seat and riding position and almost all the manufacturers have the bars a little too low. Even riders that are 5 foot five I still want to lift the handlebars on most of these bikes with a razor. I think the manufactures could do a little better job paying attention to their customers but at least with Yamaha they’ve kept the TW and the XT 250 is a great choice For an entry-level type of bike that is truly dual purpose it’s not great off-road but it’s decent on road it’s a good 50-50 bike and they could make improvements but they keep the price fairly low and for most riders it’s going to be fine. If I’m out there jumping it I’m gonna want something better but Prince intended purpose I think Yamaha did an amazing job and the TW is a little different with the white wheels and being a little shorter with the smaller wheels and it’s definitely slow but I wish that’s what I would’ve learned on. I basically started out on an EX 500 discount ninja bike and a Honda XL 600. The TW or the XT would’ve been a much better choice I think. Also the DR 200, almost nobody mentions that and it’s a great little bike and it’s actually surprisingly well-built, if you get a little better carburetor it can be a pretty formidable little bike. And specially now I’m starting to see those options because I’ve got pretty severe knee issues and lower back and neck issues from injuries and I want something that’s incredibly easy to ride that’s comfortable and no I kind of miss it I don’t really need the power and I think I’d be pretty happy with an XT 250 or a DR or a TW at this point. I really like the Cadillacs but Those seats are pretty hard and it’s a little on the racy side for me and I want a little more comfort and Street ability now but that’s a pretty good range and I think you picked a pretty good list of bikes that will kind of fit everybody pretty well if you’re into the dirt stuff that’s what you like calyx is a pretty decent bike the DR is a good simple smaller dirtbike that’s OK for Street the XT 250 is a little more comfortable and the TW, well I don’t even know how to describe it it’s just a TW they’re weird quirky and slow but there’s just something very cool about them and they are a ton of fun to ride, I think it’s just an easy bike that you can go and you can twist the throttle as hard as you want and you’re probably not gonna get into trouble with it and with the shorter wheels and seat heights even short people are going to be able to keep their feet on the ground and it’s just a great play bike. You made awesome choices. I find on a lot of these videos what you end up seeing is dirt people showing the Hondas in the KLX in the more race style bikes and you get the more street people showing simple bikes. For a dual purpose and for my writing style I think these are pretty much perfect options and cover full range of dual purpose starter bikes, these are all great choices and somebody picks one because they like the styling of it I think they’re gonna be very happy with them

    Personally I LOVE my TW200. If you aren't going more than 50 mph you made the right choice, If you need higher speeds definitely go with something with better gearing for speed. Honestly it really is more dirtbike than it is street bike. but also lacks all the stuff you really need for off road so you have to mod it. (skid plates, handle bars and guards, suspension and brake mods.) but after that you are set for anything other than hard enduro stuff. It aint makin it up that gnarly hill climb but it will climb all others at a walking pace.

    There's a helluva lot of trails that are too technical to be riding on larger bikes.... I saw one man redo an old xt225 & he went
    places that were scary w/ sheer drop-offs but his little bike took it all where the others were challenged. He had redone the
    sprockets to be more aggressive & while he didn't use the 6th gear it was needed on the 2 lane roads going into the trails.

    I was kinda hoping you would include the; Konker KSM 200 &The Pitster Pro XTR 200 (when they have Knobby Tires installed) The XT 125 and 225 (slightly older, but still available if you look hard) But most of all the semi-Famous Honda CRF 230L (and maybe the CRF 230m, when it has Knobby's installed) This is a rare segment here in Canada. We have Dirt Bike in almost every size available, but very few Entry Level Dual-Sports.! I personally feel we need more, bcz not only are they great in the woods or trails, but let me tell you a secret... they are really good within a Urban Community.! Pot Holes, Bumps, Gravel patches and Alleyways. Curbs, medians, boulevards even Stairs if need be. Need to get out of a bad situation to protect yourself, jump the curb easily. I find mine to be very lightweight, great in the rain and good in the snow. I can carry almost as much as a Scooter, yet have more power and can obvious go off-road (like seriously Off-Road) It's no big deal if I drop it, it's easy to lift or drag out of the mud. Most can be carried on a carrier behind the average Car No Truck or Trailer ever Needed.!

      Ooh they are calling it the "S" I like that bcz it made no sense to me when they dropped the "S" back in 2018. I think S is for Street. Just like Honda's L is for Lights (I believe) I think the KLX 230 is a FAIL (I have yet to sit on one or Ride it) but according to the Stats it just as Tall and Heavy as a KLX 250, yet air cooled and less power. I am praying that the 2022 "230S" will somehow compete with the XT 250 which currently wins in ever category except 6-speeds. Our former XT could do 130 kms/hr full out, on the flat with no headwind. Faster if you take the Heavy GLASS off the front headlight. hee hee

    Almost none of the list is either allowed in Germany since ABS is mandatory since 2014, which is a dumb regulatory measure for tiny bikes.
    off topic: abs saves you only when brakes lock, when they are too strong or the pavement is slippery and thus causes the brakes to lock.

    Wanna upset Kawasaki, talk about how the KLX 230 should have been built to compete with Yamaha XT 250 but it FAILED in every possible way.!
    "Tommy Angelo" comments that they just announced the 2022 will have a Lower Seat Height, which is really needs. It also need to loose a bit more weight. I feel the KLX 230 and 250 are much too close to the same Bike for a similar price. Obviously, Kawasaki is not going continue to sell the KLX 230, 250 and 300.
    How much do you wanna bet that Honda is going bring back the CRF 230L (as fuel injected) and outshine both the XT 250 and KLX 230.! My Unicorn is Fuel Injection, Low Seat Height (at or below my XT 250), weight (at or below my XT 250) standard tire size, and yet a 6-speed.! I am shocked no other brand can achieve this with a 223cc or 233cc when Yamaha can almost pull it off with a 249cc. Stop pulling from the parts bins Manufactures and give us a Street-Legal version of the Honda CRF 230 Dirt Bike.! I would even buy one with slightly smaller tires if need be.
