- In the modern world money has come to be seen as something immoral, and financial success as proof that someone is dishonest. The problem is that in the tech world you need money to do anything. Even if you choose to deploy open source software you still need to buy servers, switches and routers.

I don't know why are you all hating him, hes the only guy on youtube who tells the truth to your face. Deal with it.

New Vid!!!
that's massive, man, I'm really impressed
Hi Eli
Would you recommend the ITIL path, for gaining a better understanding on ROI, and more of the service side of things in IT etc?
Jason raymond There isn't really a path for that. You just have to master what ever your company/contract uses and make it more efficient because you've mastered it and know what corners you can cut without impacting quality. Or just made the impact of quality small enough to make it worth while.
+Jason raymond I've seen quite a few government / large corporation job postings recently where they want ITIL. If you want to work for a big organization, it's probably a good idea.

Thanks for force feeding me that bottle full of knowledge/motivation. I needed this. Wish me luck in making changes to be successful.
That sweet fresh ass smell. You honesty is refreshing Eli.
Just found these old videos and am loving them. Been an IT consultant for 18 years and your points are dead on!!!! I’ve worked for VARs, MSPs, a mega IT services company (top 3), and my own consulting firm. I’m astonished by how on-point your observations are in relation to my 18+ years of experience!!
I usually just skim over your technical videos, but will definitely be watching closer now!!
Keep up the good work Eli!!
I love the soccer analogy. It was really thought out.
Thank you, Eli!
This was the perfect video for me at the perfect time.
The mindset and new direction you are taking with your vids are spot on. Design, configuration, setup, break fix, all of that is taught everywhere, but not this. I highly recommend you continue this path, the hard things in business, IT etc. are not taught, only learned the hard way. Thanks, your vids are both informative and motivational.
Don't stop making these Eli. This information is not only invaluable, but unavailable to those seeking employment in the technology field. While open source is a passion for a great many of us, the reality is the IT industry is value driven. If we, as professionals, can't add value to a company.... What are we doing? These new videos seem like common sense, but so many are unfamiliar with the business side of things. I truly want to thank you for being open and honest with your viewers, no matter how abrasive it may seem. I feel people don't understand the motivation behind these videos is centered on success. If I wanted "Ivory tower" information I would pay for classes or get another degree.
I just have to say that I love Mr. Eli. His conversations are always priceless! Thank you for doing this.
This video was very good and specific, thank you so much for uploading this Eli! It really helped me.
Eli the Computer Guy this is why I love your videos. As an IT professional for 6 years now, this video is real world. I'm moving to a new job now, and what you said in this video as far as I am now (15:27) has already reinforced my decision. I am building a new CRM for a company, and they are paying me good, so what you mentioned about this I can vouch for. Anyone who reads this comment, don't think Eli is trying to make you some money-hungry piece of shit, he's trying to help you further your career because in the business world this is exactly how you have to be. The business isn't catering to your needs, you cater to their needs, and yeah you might have to replace a person with technology but as an IT pro, THAT'S YOUR JOB. Do it. Don't regret it, don't feel bad, if that person can't compete with a piece of technology, why pay for them? Morals mean nothing. Earn your money, buy yourself something nice, buy your wife something nice, buy your children presents for their birthday, take that money and enjoy it and pass it on. Don't complain about Eli being about money, because regardless if you want it to be or not, our world is about money. Money is not evil, you are not evil for going after money to support your family and life. I play guitar, if I wasn't making the money I am I wouldn't be able to afford the guitars and pianos that I want. They make me so happy, and without this money I earn, I wouldn't be able to do the things I want that make me happy outside of my work life. You live to live, not to make money. So if you complain about these videos being about money, you need to get a grip on what your life is about. Money will buy you the hobbies you have. Money will make your life easier, from every single standpoint. If you can reply to this comment with one point that says money doesn't matter and money can't fix this situation, do it. I promise you I will counter your argument with proof and evidence that money can fix the exact situation you're in right now with the society we have.
Thank you so much Eli! You really motivate me to aim higher. I plan to make a lot of money in this field and i need people who have been in it and are realistic enough to tell the truth. The truth is people who argue with this fact argue because they are not ambitious to progress in this field, so they are satisfied with what they are earning. But then someone planning on building his/own infrastructure and company will totally agree with what you are saying and that s me. So thank You for your transparency!
Eli, I just want to thank you for this video. I really needed to hear this now.
I like your insights Eli. Feels like a lot of wisdom for my professional life.
Honestly, i am so grateful and appreciative that you don't hide your motives or any of that common CZcamsr bullshit. The fact that your videos have and continue to educate me, at no cost to me, while being able to provide you with a steady income, is the IDEAL win-win situation and i couldn't ask for a better system. Keep doing what your doing as long as its profitable for you. And for the love of god don't pull your videos if one day CZcams screws you or whatnot =P
EDIT: Appropriate i think can be swapped for "Efficient"
Ex. Having a "money doesnt matter" mindset is not an efficient way of working within this industry.
If not, appropriate works =)
IMO you are one of the only truly admirable CZcamsrs
because you give me incredibly valuable information for FREE
information that I would actually pay money for
Eli, I really could have done with this video ~15-20 years ago. But it's really refreshing to hear this all summarized this well.
Mind you, I had to figure much of this stuff on my own working many jobs living paycheck to paycheck, unable to pay for all the trainings I needed.
I remember doing a servicing job when I was asked to do a hardware testing for a job that wouldn't pay even my fare there and back if I didn't live around the corner from the company.
And what I didn't realize back then: They were a graphics design company. And obviously nobody there understood how business works. It was hell.
I had to explain to them, that I just don't own the tools and they would have to buy everything if they wanted me to figure it out. Then they fired me.
"When all this was an idea that I pulled out of my ass and still had that fresh ass smell" -Eli
I really love your videos Eli. The advice you give is great and the gems that you give should be taken seriously by everyone watching. The outdoor videos, in my opinion, are much better than the ones that are indoors...aesthetically. I had one problem with this video though. I just wanted you to move so the tree didn't look like it was growing from your head. Again, great videos and keep up the great work!
Man, I just want to give you a hug! It is all about the MONEY! Money let's a person do the things in life that they enjoy - and it all cost $$!
+Eli the Computer Guy
Omg, literally thank you so much for making this video. I am *tired* of explaining this to people. The whole concept of money being the prime reason. THANK YOU
Great video Eli. I like your honesty and advise. Keep doing great videos.
Your video has opened my eyes. I never saw money as evil, but I did not think it was necessary to live a life as an IT advisor. I now see that money is a tool that is absolutely necessary in this field. Thanks
Wow... I did not even finished watching, but I must say: THIS IS THE BEST IT VIDEO I'VE EVER SEEN. A must-watch for IT tech guys/girls.
One of your best videos! I need this; I freelance/dabble and have trouble asking for (i.e. "demanding") money.
Dude you do your thing and be the air in the bottle. There are idiots will condemn, criticize and complain. the three CCC - it is great to show your dept and able to get us the think outside the box and see the world as it is changing drastically. It is refreshing and an eye opener. Go ahead make more.
I have been in the IT field for over 15 years and now pursuing my degree in Business Administration. Budgeting and HR are vital to advance
Wow ! This video is very enlightening. It's like a chance to sit down with an IT professional and pick your brain..Thanks for including this in your videos.
Pride= #1 killer of Americans. Only the almighty spaghetti monster can smack me down. Man, I so needed to hear this message because I don't want to die of running around on the field all day. Good one Eli. Excellent!
I’m not in tech but I watch your videos for your business philosophy. Very real world and not “mindset” crap. Good stuff, Eli 👌
Preach on about making money in IT because I want to know and learn as much as I can about gaining, increasing and maintaining finances in the IT world!
Thanks for sharing these vids and your knowledge.
Thanks so much Eli, you truly are a valuable resource to us techies :) Love your work.
Watching your new videos, and how you describe that you can't give advice anymore, and watching this old videos, I understand.
I have to admit. The first 20 or so minutes I listened to your video in the background, I thought you were a bit of a jerk. BUT, I listened to the whole video, and I have to say, you have very valid points, and an actual "in the trenches" outlook on things. +1 Subscriber.
Great advice!! Love the videos please keep making them. I really enjoy the real world slap in the face. :)
I love to watch all your videos, thanks a lot!
Some awesome classic Eli. Something about this that really got me motivated.
Always look forward to Eli's videos.
One of your best videos!
Fully agree with you. Very good monologue, I really liked it. Thank you
Keep up the good work! It´s good too hear stuff from the real world Thanks!
Eli is above all a pragmatist and a realist. This is probably one of the important videos of all. Even for poets and artist.
I've been subbed to you for about two years and this has always been obvious to me.
such a valuable honest rant captured here - priceless
Amazing content Ellay , been following your addvice and apply it for sometime and i am amazed of the good communication that you are providing even after 5 years i have to pay big bucks to get the same connetent even if close to this . amazing kerp it up from UK
Thanks Eli for your insights and valuable advice. I've spent money on training in IT. Appreciate your views on ROI and costing of my services and finding that niche market. I'm 59. Soon to be 60 and I look forward to establishing myself in this service market.
Coming from a business owner's perspective, I can tell you that you are completely right. I owned and operated an IT company for 3 years, and didn't particularly enjoy it; I closed the doors and ventured on to newer things.
Being a professionally trained mechanic, I decided to put my business/ relations savvy toward an automotive shop (Mostly computer and electrical related). We did piss poor financially because we catered to people too much. I was only charging $50 an hour. I didn't realize how unbelievably little that amount of money was, and the kind of people it attracted. I was given the same advice by a business consultant, as soon I started charging near $100 an hour, the type of people that I would get work from changed and so did my wallet.
On $50 an hour, you will not be able to expand and purchase things you need. It's great if you're a humble and kind person and just want to do it as a side note to your current well paying career, but money is the way the world works; If you don't make enough of it you can't succeed in what you want to sometimes.
People do have a warped view on money. Money is not bad. Maybe I want to run a huge company and be successful. You NEED the money to do it, whether or not you buy hookers and blow with your profit is a different story. You can stab someone with a butter knife, it does not mean that the butter knife is corrupt; It was never intended to stab anything but butter.
I think people end up with serious conflicting Ideas about this stuff, because they don't understand the core intricacies of how everything cohesively works together. I've learned from my own personal experience because I had the chance to run and own a company, there are some things I was seriously naive to before I had the chance to experience them lol
I liked your video classes :( I'm in university and I take a lot of courses in Coursera but when it comes to IT your classes are the best. Those vlogs you've been doing are nice too anyway.
Thank you for being zo clear and honest about Money.
For me the EYE OPENER was the quote that this (capitalistic) system might not be the best system, but that we are in it anyway.
As a natural health therapist I know that most genelal practioners and specialists have to little knowledge of the broad field of the so called "alternative medicine" or "additional treatments" and therefore sometimes reject it completely. I have seen some good results in the treatment of cancer (although regretfully not in all cases). So if your wife does not reacts to her present therapy, you might consider to contact alternative therapists and ask if they see other ways to succesfully treat her.
This video needs to be updated! Think about it!Great Job, thankiu
I needed this video, great advice. Thanks!
love this video man. the incite is great.
This is very educational and motivational! Thanks.
Good advice. Thanks Eli.
Money has never been evil! It is how we use it! People who think money is evil, need reeducation !
+Robel Fesshaye People who think money is evil should just give their money to me LOL.
+Robel Fesshaye People who think money is evil should just give their money to me LOL.

I hear you loud and clear and I am a music producer! Thanks
It's my first time finding this channel today, this guy fucking gets it.
Happy I stumbled across this, still relates even in the current climate and gives me some more perspective on financial success. 1:04:49 + perfect statement.
A lot of people don't understand that money is what makes the world function and keep moving. Without money you can't places.
I miss the old Eli! i don't know how i stubbled a pond this video but you sound different and passionate. Now you sound so snarky!
..
Hi Eli, long term subscriber here. I hope you start making short videos soon I almost never have 1 full hour to watch these! You have helped me become a good IT guy but please change the video format! Kind regards.
Probably not going to happen, just watch it in parts.
Damn man I really loved this video!
27:00👍
1:03:42 Yep. That definitely sounds like something, an older person would say.
Nice vid. Really informative.
Thank you Eli.
Keep these videos coming Eli
Hi Eli
Where's your yacht dood!
Glad you-re still doing the videos pal
What do companies want to see when hiring? An employee that shows up to work on time, doesn't call in sick constantly, doesn't whine and cry about having to work long hours. You can have all the degrees in the world, doesn't mean you can actually do the job you are applying for. Real world experience is what is needed. Anybody can get a degree if they are given the chance, its what that person does outside of that course of material that will make or break their career. A person needs to put those skills they are learning to real world use whether it be on their own personal equipment, or getting an internship through a local business. A friend of mine is working on becoming a certified welder & diesel mechanic. He got a job at a logging company full time so in a way his job is paying for his school, but he is learning both in class and in the real world. Colleges don't teach real world, they teach out of a book full of what-ifs. Real world experience is what a company needs and wants. If you show up with a basket full of certificates and degrees they will likely pass over you because they'll look at you as being over-qualified...Micron did that to me. They will also pass over you because you could be a liability to the company in the way of you are over-qualified due to your skills, you work for xx company for a while, then another company offers you more money so you quit xx company and move on creating a hardship for xx company now because they spent time training you to their standards and now you up and leave.
I find it funny that people whine when you tell them you charge $60 an hour for a service call. Well I can fix it myself, I can do this, that or the other. A few days later they're calling you back asking for an appointment because they had no clue how to fix the problem, and on top of that they broke whatever it was worse because they were screwing around with it trying to fix it. Now they're even more mad because instead of $60 and what would have been a simple repair now cost them several hundred dollars in parts they damaged due to their lack of knowledge of that product and their lack of ability to properly disassemble and repair the product.
Another thing too, I've seen companies sending their service techs out on calls all over the place. They don't stop and look at the locations they are sending their techs so their poor tech is going from one side of town to the other, back across town several times a day rather than looking at the calls, and planning a route. Huge time saver is having an office manager that can plan a route on the fly, move calls around when needed, reschedule customers who had to leave and won't be home or work.
My boss has been talking about closing down our shop and just doing service work, and having me do all the phone & scheduling work from home. I thought at first that would be horrible for me because I'd lose pay and hours. In the end when I stop and think about it, it would save me money, I wouldn't have to leave home and drive to work, I could work whatever hours I wanted because I could work wherever I want and I'd have the phone with me and computer no matter where. Overall many of our calls are people calling wanting free advice...don't need a 10,000 square foot building for that LOL. About 95% of our calls are for service work, 5% for sales. We do appliance service/repair/sales/service/installation. The place to be is in the service/repair industry there's always something breaking. Economy goes downhill and sales goes downhill as well but people want their stuff fixed because they gotta have it.
One can also have connections at the right places
I listen to your videos in 1.5 or 2x so I can listen to more of them
I like how this guy explains stuff.
This is reality and this guy is spot on
Changed my viewpoint about Money....
Making money is good thing but without losing moral....
I really like these topics, as much as I do the low level stuff.
IT is mostly about cost and making sure things run smoothly on the technological side. Technology isn't just part of business. It is the business. It takes skill to run and sustain business. The term "Technology" doesn't mean electronics. It means it's a combination of methods, techniques and processes for either products, services or general purpose to specific fields.
Brlliant Advice Eli
Eli did you get your ROI back on this 1.5 hr video form ad clicks?
Thank you Eli
people gonna hate but its usually derived from deeply rooted insecurities. Great job!
you are doing a great job
Money is evil when money is the only focus...money is important, but only if your goal is to earn money by making a good product(s)
Daniel Coffman you'll fail
Bomb Tech Maybe I didn't say it right, but if money the MAIN goal...you'll fail because your product will suck. What I tried to say is if your goal is to make a good product, the money will come. If money is your MAIN goal...you will fail; if money is the result of your product...you will win.
Daniel Coffman I will admit, I misunderstood what you meant. Yes, if you make a great product, money will come. The old "Field of Dreams" mentality. I concede my previous statement.
BB Christopher
I think you misunderstand what I'm saying. I'm saying, if ALL your focus is on JUST getting money, your product is going to suck. If your goal is to make a good product AND sell it for good money, then you will succeed. Money isn't evil...people's mentality is/can be.
BB Christopher
That is what I meant when I said "Money is evil when money is the only focus" Money isn't evil...but it becomes evil when people have a bad attitude. This is going to sound weird...but an object/idea becomes bad when it is treated badly...like when people make owning guns something bad. A gun, when used in the correct mentality, for protection, for hunting, for keeping society in check, was/is a good thing. When people started using guns JUST to kill, that is when guns became viewed as evil. It is our mentality that determines if something is evil or not. I can make money good if I have the correct mentality about it; money can also be evil if I decide to have the wrong mentality about it.
I see now that I need to be better about explaining what I'm trying to say...people seem to be misunderstanding me.
Great video.
Thank you very mutch
Money is good--it pays for things. That's why college wants my money.
I did that ... i wrote a web app that let customer service or customers to answer questions in 20 minutes vs a 3 week data manager task.
Smart smaet man. Talk to the point!
Thank you.
That's the truth in every phase of life (in business, relationships, health, etc.)... give and take. In business giving is cost and take is profit. In romantic relationships you "give" your better act to get the girl ("profit"). And so on.
Maybe because of the saying "money is the source of all evil" emphasis the idea that money is bad, not the other way around,
that's why i used to say "Greed is the source of all evil"
The actual words are "the love of money is the root of all evil". I think your rephrasing would be in accord.
@@rwalden42 hmmm yah that would make more sense, but not everyone interested in money too if you ask me.
He raises a lot of valid points. However money has the quick potential to distort people too.
Thank you
Money is a resource. Without money you can't do what you want to do in the scale you want to do it. Money = growth, growth = visibility and visibility allows you to do more of what you love to do. Stop being naive people, this is the world we live in.
Hmmm. From the sounds of it seems like IT has more demand than programming? Im interested in Coding honestly but i DO care about money. Is there good money in coding too?
eli , i really think you should write a book about this ...
I think that sometimes with the people that are new into Tech, like my self, don't always understand our value. We sometimes don't realize that our work can save a large company millions or a small business a thousands of dollars a year. There is nothing wrong with understanding your value and charging what you are worth.
One of your best videos. Always nice to hear someone telling it like it is instead of tiptoeing round the easily offended morons and hipsters that there are all too many of.
Additionally, it's the client's choice if they purchase your service for the stated $1000. They are not being forced to against their will. If they do, in fact, make the purchase, they perceive your product as having a value greater than the set $1000 and see the transaction as a deal on their side of the bargain. More people need to understand basic economics.
