- I visited the underground flood control channel in Kasukabe, Saitama. It's known as the "Underground Temple" (Chika Shinden in Japanese) It was exciting. If you want to see something out of the ordinary, the Underground Temple can be a good day trip idea from Tokyo.
Important Note
*This tour is only in Japanese
*Buses are not really running from the nearest station

Thanks for watching
I work in the stormwater/erosion control industry. I really like the Japanese stormwater system. Thanks for sharing. I’ll visit this place one day.
The Underground Temple is famous for a bunch of film shooting. It also appears in Splatoon3 as Undertow Spillway (マテガイ放水路).
I have tried to visit this place before, but a typhoon flooded the temple and prevented me. It did the actual work 🤣.
8:02 - the Mecha-Balrog waits there. 😜
9:33 - that does look like it could be a map in a game like Goldeneye or such.
If anybody else like me thought that the song played by the restaurant at 13:48 sounded familiar, it's because it's an arranged version of Yumi Matsutoya(then known as Yumi Arai)'s "やさしさに包まれたなら" ("If you are wrapped in kindness"), the song played at the credits of Kiki's Delivery Service (JP version).
It's like the Mines of Moria. Watch out for balrogs.
I love this video. Thank you for giving your viewers these cultural experiences we might otherwise have missed. You share things which enrich us, as you stand in as our own personal tour guide. Wow! Thank you! May you be blessed.
This "underground temple" was not what I expected. I thought it would be a place of worship! It was cool to see backrooms in real life 😆.
This whole video is based off a BBC documentary of the same name
Someone else who thought of "The Backrooms"! 😂
Looks like quite an engineering marvel. Very cool that guided tours are offered. Thanks for this interesting video.
“The final boss is here”. Hahaha. You are so drôle sir! Thank you for showing us what we wouldn’t normally see. Thanks for all the great angles and the underground temple curry!
Just like in anime lol
This seems to be the inspiration for the Mission in Mirrors Edge, where you have to traverse the City via the Underground Sewage System. Cool to sse it actually exists.
I always enjoy seeing how other countries tackle with their excess of water. And pretty at that. This Dutchie approves.
Thank you for this little insight. 😎👍
I think you should do a curry tour of Japan. :)
I just subscribed to this channel. My daughter and I had been watching and enjoying your Solo Travel Japan/Food Tour. We hope to travel to Japan, truly enjoy your video’s.
You do a fantastic job showing the beauty of the people, food and culture of Japan. Word of mouth to others hopefully will help increase your subscribers. We would be too sad not being able to see more videos. ❤❤
Very cool infrastructure! Surprised it's so often used! Cannot imagine the cost, although it may prevent much damage and expense! Thanks for taking us along! 😎✌️
Ah, the mandatory "Solo Travel Japan" Curry at the end, nice.
WHOA! this is cool video 😎
That was very interesting. I am glad you got some shots of people standing by the pillars. It helped give an idea of how big they are. I also liked the reflection shots. Very artistic!
That's great! Thank you. Something interesting and different
That's one of my favourite builds in the world, thank you!
Wow my friend this is amazing very beautiful for outstanding Japan has a lot of beautiful places and scenery
Your tour today was fascinating. Never knew such a thing existed. I don't think I could climb all those stairs to go into or out of the shaft. Will let the hardier traveler do it. Glad you got your extra large curry rice. Take care, stay safe.
Thanks for bringing us along!
Very different and interesting tour video. Thanks for providing such a good explanation of what you and we were seeing. Too bad no Underground Tunnel curry 😢
What and interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
A little bit different video on this channel, but I like it.Very interesting to see all the work that went into building that flood prevention 'device',
I'm glad you got some curry, you deserved it after that walk!
I was hoping that when the tour was coming to the end of its time limit, 40 Samurai would come running out of the darkness with Katana's drawn, screaming "AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!" and then any tour guides or engineers that were there would tell everyone "Oh no! Hurry! Everyone to the exit!"
And then when everyone gets upstairs to leave, the soccer field would open up and a giant Mech would rise out of it, or instead of that, maybe Ultraman or Tetsujin 28-go (that's if Ultraman is too busy fighting monsters).
Never heard of that tour, thanks. I enjoyed the "artsy" video reflection from the puddle inside the temple. And the food portion of your videos are a nice addition. Wish I could get that kind of curry for that price. At least double here in Hawaii.
They might only have a Standard Curry, but the size of the portion makes up for that!
Thank you for sharing. My in laws live in Saitama. I was there visiting last month, I wish I knew of this place.
Awesome 👌 videos.
You always have something interesting to show us. The Temple reminded me of Karnak. Sorry you missed out on the curry. Knew you would go for it.
Always love your videos. It was a good thing you filmed with some people in the shot. Before that I didn't really grasp how big the room was. Food always looks delicious, I am always hungry after watching your videos! :). Thank you for showing me the country I dream about visiting.
/Sincerely
Robert, Sweden
I love your videos and explorations and your love for Japanese Curry!
So typical in the end not being able to resist the call of food! Hahaha! Interesting place you visited. I’m surprised that they use it that many times annually and yet it was super clean inside.
What fascinating civil engineering! Thanks for taking us along.
It did remind me of the great dwarf city of Dwarrowdelf. Thank you for this fun video!
I think i first heard/saw of the flood control area when playing the VN g-senjou no maou. Cool to see it IRL 👍
Thank you for another wonderful and educational adventure. It makes me smile when I find a new video on my youtube feed. Thank you again I can not wait until our next adventure
This is on my list for our visit this summer. We have someone booked that speaks Japanese since it is required. I can’t wait to learn more about it. ☺️
OMG Woah! Those look incredible!!
This was a different adventure. I liked learning more about the water system.
Feels like the underground area in Attack on Titans
I expect nothing less from Japan.. their intelligence in architecture is beyond belief.. although I was expecting a Great King or maybe Thor to come from behind one of those pillars... I love to learn something new.. and you showed it to us...👍👍👍..
Always nice seeing your videos Thank you.
That was definitely cool! Never knew such places existed! And, yes, those shots were good! 🙂
Marvelous design and creativity... Japan always give new surprise in technology. Arigato gozaimasu 🙏 Thank you to share this beautiful video with us 🙏👍.
I am going to Japan in about a month. Your videos have helped me so much to get a feel for your country. Thank you so much!
I love you Solo Travel Japan ❤
This was a fun and interesting excursion, and unique on your channel. Love it!
We have something like this in Chicago called "Deep Tunnel" but there are no tours that I know of! Japan is so cool! I think that would be a cool thing to see. Thanks for taking us there!
Wow! I'd never heard of that, and I've lived an hour or so north of Chicago all my life! The things you learn...
This was very cool, thank you for sharing!
I watched your newest upload while eating leftover Sapporo soup curry I made for dinner last night. I enjoyed watching another peaceful video of yours.
Quite impressive! Preparedness is based upon the need to protect the area from flooding (something that has happened in the past. The "temple" is huge. Hydro engineering at its best! Thanks for the tour. Curry rules! 😁😜😂❤👍✨
That was different, thank you for the ride! :)
greatly enjoyed, ty for the tour
Thank you for sharing this with us! 😁
This was such a cool and interesting video! 😍
Very interesting field trip! I took notes for the test later. 😆
Wow! Just wow! What an unreal place!
What an incredible place! Thank you for the tour! Underground Temple curry rice does make everything perfect!🍛🙏💕😁
That was amazing and very interesting too, I would love to see more videos like this one. Thank you for sharing.
Wow. It's like a modern-day version of those underground cisterns in Istanbul (except those were for holding and filtering water for drinking). I can only imagine what it's like in that main chamber at high water. Thanks for taking us along!
There are similar structures in Europe, although they are used for drinking water. Thus they also cannot be visited inside the hall itself (there are tours for those as well, you can watch those caverns through thick windows. Quite "temple"-like edifices...
I watched the entire episode liked 👍 and so I feel comfortable saying I was bored for you. When lunch came I’m guessing it was a relief to both of us.
That was fascinating, and what an impressive building!
I'll say! It really gives the feeling of an ancient temple!
So cool! I definitely want to do this tour when I visit Japan!
Great video, and yeah great engineering and infrastructure to prevent flooding. That pillars inside the tunnel remind me about Ancient Greek.
Great video and I have had my first japanes curry in Cologne (restaurant daymio) it was amazing, now I understand everything ;)
was impressed at how clean that pressure adjusting area was
we have one of these in houston texas. its called The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern :)
That was pretty interesting.i love the video
Thank you for your videos that have accompanied me as the background to many focus sessions! May I request that you create a playlist that contains all your videos, so that I can keep them playing on shuffle? I can use the playlists organised by categories, but it would be great to have a longer one.
Wow! That is incredible and brilliant! Talk about planning-ahead. How long did it take to plan and build? It's AMAZING! 😮
That round thing looks like a Terracotta legion modern style! ;)
Awesome video
The temple looked like a set from a star wars movie, thanks for showing.
Lol “ Do you wanna grab some lunch?” … always..😊
kakkoi ne. definitely a temple, to safety and helping each other. And yes, that's a great angle--the reflection in the puddle is so profound. It's too bad you didn't get to try the Underground Temple curry, but at least you got some wonderful-looking curry!
9:47. Wow people’s height definitely seem very small compared to the height of the underground flood control channel😮.
looks a lot like the Cisterna Basilica in Istanbul - ty for excellent content STJ
Great video! Very informative!! Life is too short, always have the curry! ❤️
Very cool. 🌞🌼
I just came back from Japan and I miss it already Went to some food places you've recommended. Thank you!
I love your videos! I always feel like I’m really there!
Those giant concrete pillars remind me of the Underground City of Moria from the Lord of the Rings.....😃
Reminds me a lot of the Mines of Moria in Lord of the Rings. Drums in the deep! Thanks for the great tour!
Seeing this video made me very excited because I first "experienced" one the the game Ghostwire: Tokyo and seeing it in game was impressive, but that fact that there are public tours of some makes me even more excited.
I've been there too, it's magnificent, have to book first, they also have different courses available which takes you to different parts of the underground temple.
Thank you for the interesting video.
It's always interesting when these entirely function-designed feats of engineering actually create an aesthetic. This _does_ look like a temple to water spirits, in some futuristic fiction.
Wow congratulations another great video very informative , and you make me mr curry man thank you
Wow - looks like you could find a balrog of morgoth where the “final boss” would be.
Thanks for taking us along!
Brilliant engineering! Cool stuff 👍
カナダにこの場所はありません。ほんとにおもしろいですね。ツアーはありがとうございました。
This is actually very interesting. What a marvelous, well-thoughtout engineering that should be better known. I wish there is more explanation on how this is supposed to work. The shaft reminds me of Godzilla, zero point when the monster is about to burst out and everyone is scrambling to escape.
To cool to experience a different culture through another person’s experience
would be a neat place for art and murals
That is a pretty cool place, also that curry looked great.
I really like how the underground temple looks, although I agree, it is a bummer that they only do tours in Japanese.
Also, I haven't had lunch yet, and now I really want some curry
OMG I didn't Underground Temple existed in Japan . So cool!
