  • From Robert's second studio album Bad Influence, released in 1983. This album really put him on the map with contemporary Blues fans just prior to his explosion on FM radio. There are several great songs on this album but Phone Booth is considered by many to be the best. Music and Lyrics written by The Robert Cray Band.

"I'm new in Chicago, got no one else to call ... callin' you baby, took my very last dime." The guy is beyond cool. So tight funky sound with great vocals, guitar solo and bass.

My daughter used to dance to this when she was very little girl I remember it like yesterday, she is now 34, going to watch Robert in Buxton in May, looking so forward to it.

My mom used to have him on a mixed tape which she would always play at her little jams back in the 80s. Brings back memories and still sounds fresh. Good times

For most all of the really outstanding Blues and Blues/Rock guitarists Robert Cray sets the standard. One thing they point out every time is how 'clean' he sounds... no 'string music' where you drag your fingertips on the strings as you slide up and down on the neck changing chords. In the face of that kind of precision, he never loses his feel and passion for what he's playing. I've seen him 4x LIVE in a variety of environments and he is always warm, friendly and reliably wiseass in between songs... and then he proceeds to just tear it up - every time. You never get less than his best when he's on stage. On this particular song there's a lot of technique going on to get the sounds he producing in the lead sections. I can understand why Clapton was sort of stopped in his tracks when he heard Mr. Cray play this song.

He was friends with Curtis Salgado and the rest of the guys in Robert cray Band so I was lucky enough to see them play many times, then come to the house when Taylor's closed for the night..and stay and play Foosball, maybe jam and boy we partied. RIP Greg Riddle 2018

I stood at edge of the Flood City Music Festival stage in Johnstown, Pa. about 10 years ago, and looked up at Cray doing this song just a few feet away from me. Of course, he tweaked the lyrics. "I'm new here in Flood City, got no one else to call." Goosebumps.
