The day when you find out, not only that Charlie Pride is still alive, but you can see him perform. In Sparks Nevada, January 10. I'll be there. I hope you are too.
i just heard the story about how this song was written. Willie Nelson was a struggling songwriter, and he was in the employ of a publishing company and was working with Hank Cochran writing songs together, but they weren't coming up with much. Hank had to leave for something one day, and told Willie while I'm gone, why don't you just write a song and play it for me when i get back. So Willie was sitting there in the office, saying to himself I have to write a song, what am I going to write about? And he looked around, saw the wall, and just said, "hello wall", and realized that could be a song. That's the brilliance of Willie Nelson. Later, as has been mentioned, Faron Young refused to buy the song from Willie, instead he loaned him $500 in exchange to sing it. Of course, Faron made a lot of money just singing it, so when Willie later told Faron he wanted to pay him back the $500, Faron said don't worry about it, but I tell you what, I know you have a cow, how about you give me a calf from that cow one day. So from then on Faron and Willie whenever they saw each other would joke about how Faron's calf was doing, and how it was growing. Some time later, Willie bought a prize bull, and had it delivered to Faron, dropping it off in his driveway with a note that said "your calf is all grown up, Willie." Faron made a good living in retirement studding that bull out, apparently. And that's the story of Hello Walls.
This is one of those classic sad songs that help a man cope through their perfect lyrics and delivery. The love of my life for the past three years passed away in July- I find myself saying hello to my walls a lot now.
