Loving your videos Dave, you have such a calmimg voice. I was drawing in colour pencil and a little pastel for a couple of years,, but having had an accident and surgery back in January, i can only work from my sofa on a lap easel and not my drawing table, so for the first time since i was 14, (64 now) i came back to graphite pencil as i can fit the the small number of pencils around me, a sharpener, a tombo and a kneaded eraser, unlike colour where i blended many pencil colours together and used a number of tools, so i needed loads of space!
I love how you talk about drawing from the heart, as so true, and drawing gives me a little escapism and draws my mind away from my troubles. As soon as i hold a pencil in my hand, it feels so good. I am just finding it a little tricky transitioning from colour to graphite, if that makes sense... but i will persevere 😊

Hi Robbie, if I was drawing from life it would be all in colour, so I always like to draw from colour so I keep the practice of seeing values and chroma, converting it to black and white. Thanks for watching 🙏

Were you always able to freehand an outline drawing of a person without using tools such as a grid, or did that ability come later with practice? You captured her likeness spot on!
Hi Linda... I mainly free hand from the start... occasionally I used to use a grid just for a rough idea on then rub it out. I have always used a comparison of shapes to free hand. 🙏

The White charcoal word along with graphite? In case they collide, is it better to get white on first then cover with graphite or the other way around?
It is a case of just having a go and seeing what it does and adjust from there. You can get a shiny feel to the skin by putting white charcoal lightly over the graphite. I do both ways to see what the effect is and just go with the flow. 🙏
