Kind regards Dave.
Hi there... curious how this drawing turned out... here is the link from my CZcams Channel... czcams.com/video/6h9C7q-0hbM/video.html
I am so used to drawing using line art. This scares me a bit….but you make it look quite easy. Thank you 😊
You're welcome 🙏 it is worth practising. 🙏
Dave I've finally got some time I'm sitting down to watch all your wonderful videos. Thank u so much for making these.
Glad you like them Kristie! Enjoy... you are welcome, more to come 😊
Beautiful work!
I used to draw so much using pastel but I did it so long ago, so I'm overwhelmed to start again. But I really want to start and improve again.
Thank you so much... thrilled my work has inspired you to give pastels another go... wishing you every success! 😊🙏
Thank you for this! I am studying soft pastels now , and eventually want to paint portraits of infants, children, adults, elderly in soft pastels, so your channel is very helpful to me.
You are welcome Linda... so pleased you found my channel and you find it useful. Thank you for watching 🙏🙏
I’m currently using the cross reference method but pushing to go more freehand. Your tips are invaluable! Thank you 🙏
Wonderful! thanks for letting me know Javan... you are welcome, thanks for watching 🙏😊
I love the meditative, connectivity approach to sketching! Thx so much!
You are very welcome Kathy, thanks for taking the time to let me know how the video made you feel... means a lot. All the best ... Dave
excellent ...very informative ...thank you .
Thank for the feedback Jill... much appreciated
Excellent video, sir..
Thank you so much... appreciated 🙏
Brilliant lesson.
Thank you so much! 🙏
Excellent..
Thank you Hamsath!
lovely~~~ thanks~
My pleasure 🙏
Also I appreciate you drawing the same image three different times. If I were you I would've made three different pictures and them complete them for upload material later haha.
So thanks for doing that. It helps see the subtle quality differences between the 3 methods.
You are welcome.. that was the idea behind it. could have done what you said though hahaha.
This video what i'm looking for thank you sir you are so sharp
Thank you, and thanks for watching. 🙏
Love your tutorial, I wish I could do what you do!! More practice required.
Thanks for watching Steven... All the best... keep practicing, that's the key. 👍🙏
I just found your channel! Thanks for creating your channel - I’m starting to go back to drawing and learning A lot from you
Hi Sylvanna, thank you so much for letting me know. Thrilled you are finding my channel useful in starting back to art again. All the very best ... thanks for watching 🙏
I want to thank you very much for this tutorial. As a fellow artist I appreciate your skill and willingness to teach and share. I am a traditional pencil and pastel artist who has done mostly pet portraits and landscapes. I am now moving into doing people portraits, I working on my first as we speak.
I am still using the tracing method by put pastels on the back of a printout in order to get the outline by burnishing the edge. My preference is to practice, practice, practice your method of drawing by looking. I am able to do that with landscapes, but landscapes don't have to be so precise. People portraits not so, one must EXACT within a millimeter or it just not them.
Thanks again Dave, You're a Godsend. Also I love your new piece of Robert Powell of Jesus of Nazareth, one of my all time favorite movies. God Bless You In All That You Do! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Bless and Prosperous New Year!
Hi Wayne... thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment. Great to hear that you are venturing into portraits. I wish you all the success with them. So thrilled that you appreciate and get value from my videos... mean the world to me. Portraiture can be challenging at first as you correctly mention a millimetre out and the likeness is lost. It will become second nature to you, so keep persevering because the freedom and joy you receive from the free Hand method is spiritual and uplifting... worth the many hours of letting go of trying. That is the key once you have the method trust and faith is alĺ you need. God bless you with your endeavours... have a wonderful Xmas and stay safe. ☺🙏
Try mini Led projector 😉 easy way 😉
From Instagram the best artist good luck 👌👌👌
thanks for the support and kind words... means a lot... cheers
Your work is stunning, I subbed.
Just a note: You keep talking about "feeling" your way, "sensing" stuff and "connection" to the subject. That is you talking with what I'm guessing is lots of experience. Beginners don't feel anything. They need guidelines and instructions. The "feeling" only develops with time and practice. So it's not too usefull to be told to "let it flow" if you have no idea what you're doing.
However, for people who are not utter beginners your videos are quite informative. Thanks :)
Thank you so much... This was the very first video I uploaded around a year ago, I understand what you say as I came aware of this and if you see other videos I do add more guidelines. Cheers 🙏
Perfect! Can I just ask, what software do you use for the cross reference technique? I think you mentioned it but I didn’t quite catch it.
Hi thanks for your comment... I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018. :-)
Hi how do you draw multiple people ? On single paper
I have done... yes Please check out my gallery on my website to see... here is a link to graphite on toned paper gallery... daveportersart.co.uk/grapohite-on-toned-paper-gallery/
All the best 😊🙏
Hello, you have a very nice tutorial. I got a question, for begginer like me because i am having trouble in the likeness of my drawing consistency... What technique do you suggest or should i do first? :)
I think it would be best to do a one inch grid to start with then 2 inch and so on until you get to a quarter grid. If you have the patience to mark the main areas try the cross reference technique... it is a matter of seeing what suits you. It seems a lot of artist these days use a projector... but I refuse to use them. All the best 🙏🙏
@@DavePortersArt wow! Thanks very much i never thought you would reply with my question with your busy schedule.... I will try what u said and hope i could be as good as you soon... Keep on inspiring begginers like me..thank u and more power to your channel :) 💪 💕
Hi Dave, please tell me which computer app you use to get a grid over the picture.
Is your reference picture the same size as that of your drawing..? Can you use the same method when working on a drawing that’s bigger than the reference picture?
You can use this method with any size... it is all relative. I usually have a small reference to see the shapes and then enlarge to see the details... all the very best 🙏
I never used a mirror, can you show us in dept how it works please? What I do is set my reference photo and drawing up side down, or I make a picture off Bothe next to each other, in black and white. I never use grid, because you can always see the see the gridlines. (Maybe I push to hard on my pencil) I do transfer the photo 🫣🤫….but I am willing to learn it freehanded. That’s why I watch all your video’s
Thanks for watching them Juul. I will illustrate the mirror at some point. Thanks for the suggestion. Basically all you do is stand with your back to the painting, hold up the mirror in front of you and view the reflection... if you can include both the painting and reference image in view that is even better. It helps to see what needs to be corrected. All the best 💕🙏
As a complete newbie Dave all my pencils are new so I can't use stumps lol.
Lol... all the best... They will soon whittle down 😀
What is the name of your computer program that you use?
Hi there... I have just added the details to my description below the video... the links opens amazon where you can read all about it. 🙏😊
I would love to free hand my drawings but its extremely difficult for me. How long have you been doing realism?
I learnt by doing a lot a quick 5 minute outline sketches... I have around 40 years plus experience, so be patience... it will come for sure 🙏
@@DavePortersArt I used some similarities to the free hand method today and it's easier for me to get my portions correct. Thank you for helping me find my own way of drawing faces!
Explain what you're doing with your pencil in terms of gauging size ratios.
I don't want to know why you do that, I know the why, I want to know how, and showing us the precise technique would be appreciated.
Something I will be doing as a patreon video soon. :-)
Hi, Sir Iam from Bangladesh.Sir, how many portrait drawings should I do every day?
Hi Rinku, welcome to my channel. I would not discipline yourself like that, always do as many as what feels right. Focus on being centred inside yourself and go with how you feel, all the guidance you will find there. All the very best 🙏
@@DavePortersArt Thanks Sir❤️❤️
Do you have classes?
Hi Julie... online classes is something I'm considering sometime in the future... in the mean time I do give a more in depth look at my technique in Patreon. It is only £4 a month and you will get immediate access to all the tutorials on there... link is in any description under any my videos here on CZcams. 😊🙏
Hi Dave, As I look down the list I do not see a Patreon link. I went to Patreon and you do not come up in a search. I do wish you would start a Patreon page. I would follow you. I need to watch you in real time as you freehand the beginning stages of the painting and on through to the end. Plus the ability to ask you questions would be well worth the fee you charge, just please don't charge too much.
Here's some advice. Artists like, "Lachri Fine Art" she charges $4 a month she is now making over 6 figures a year, yea she's been doing it since '14 but it adds up in the end. Other artists want $9 or $10 a month and their followers are few. Charge less and you'll end up with more.
Thank You For All That You Do
God Bless, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year
Wayne Osborne
Hi Wayne... I am in the middle of producing and editing videos for Patreon... should be launching it sometime in January. Thanks for your input. My first tier will be £4. So should be affordable to must and I will still be posting free content on CZcams for those who can't. Good to know that you will be joining 😊Merry xmas all the very best. 🙏🙏
