WOW I just discovered this great drummer❣️not only incredible chops and I mean incredible but right in the pocket!! and not all great musicians can really break things down and teach! So Yes he’s got it all going on❣️
Jim explains things with true simplicity, I love this guy, never heard of him beofre. Bought his book straight away, looking forward to getting into it. Thanks Drumeo, awesome.
I loved how you keep it simple in the rock track even though I know you could blast a million fills, you played what the Musik needed! I've played in bands this style of Musik and I must admit there's always a temptation to overplay and it takes away from the Musik. Great drumming and great concept! My students just got another book for their Christmas wish list ;)
Amazing as always. Love this book package so much. It's has some of the best play along tunes out there and Jim is the BEST guy. I appreciate ANY time I get with him. Truly a world-class player, educator and gentleman! Get this and expand your abilities!
Such a fan of Jim. I am in agreement with him as far as the styles thing, honestly. I am currently in a modern rock band, but earlier this year, on top of the modern rock band, I was playing with a southern gospel group, and a metal group. Don't seclude yourself to just one style of music. There will come a day where a) that style is out of style (excuse the pun) or b) all of the bands in that style will have drummers, or singers, or whatever. Be universal. It really does help. Thank you Jim and Jared for this lesson :-)
Everytime i watch this man play iam absolutely blown away..got to see him play live twice..couldn't take my eyes of him..my wife love rascal flatts and i love watching the drummer...i obviously play drums..well i try..lol.
It's funny he mentions Vince Gill. I was invited to sit in with a country band last week with little experience drumming in that style. When we tries "One More Last Chance" I struggled with playing a train beat that slowly. I will definitely by applying stuff from this lesson moving forward. Thanks!
Jim, is an amazing drummer, role model to many and all around great guy! I’ve always been a fan of his passion for drumming and education... Great video!
Man....this is a whole hour of inspiration, music and art! I see comments here about the socks, about "this is not samba" etc...shame on you guys! Original samba is not even played on a drum kit...and if this is Jim's interpretation of a Samba..so be it! It's groovy, punchy and I'm sure it has work great for the many gigs this man have. Much respect Jim, both as drummer and as educator...really nice guy and educator! Thanks Drumeo for this magnificent class!
@@jimrileymusic You get three thumbs up from me Jim , I need things explained to me in lay mans terms because I do not yet understand drummer speak ,merci Jim ,Greetings from Quebec ,Canada.
Ah yes, Jim Riley. I love this guy's playing since I've first heard of him a few years ago. He's unbelievably solid and sounds great whatever he's playing. Great articulation and dynamics all the way, no overplaying, tasty fills, you name it. Being a session player myself, that's the kind of drummer whose phone number I would have on the top of my list! As for people talking about something not sounding authentic, come on. This is a great, all-around book with the aim to grasp many styles and not an in-depth analysis of each style - that's up to you for further research. And Mr Riley has a single drumset here - I'm sure that for a latin gig he would choose other drums and tune them differently, for a metal gig he would choose more chinas and a heavier ride etc etc. Great lesson overall! There has to be some sort of connection with good drumming and the name Riley... ;-)
"...if you don't love playing simple solid time then, ya know, being a professional drummer may not be the thing you wanna do." That right there is gold. Well said sir!
Jim is quite simply an awesome talent with a tool box that covers everything that matters. If one can play like Jim (you will be prepared to earn money as a working drummer). Personally, I have much work to do regarding diversity in genres. I primarily focus on only my FAVORITE: Modern Country
My tool box just expanded ,thanks Jim . I had some vice grips and duct tape ,I now have a couple of screwdrivers and a hammer.Take care and thanks again ,much appreciated.
Hey Jim! I'm a current student of Jon Kutz. Was so excited to see this posted because he's been talking about your project for ages. It's something that we started using in our lessons as soon as he got his copy, and has been a great help to me! It's a great tool for me to take the techniques that I've been working on, and try to orchestrate them both functionally and musically around my kit.
I'm sure Jon told you the infamous story where we were chatting online and I told him the idea for my new book. He said it was a bad idea because there were already too many styles books and to write something more focused and specialized. I quickly convinced him I had an angle and perspective that would make it a valuable resource and he has been a supporter of this project ever since! :-)
I Love your playing Mr. Riley (and your drum sound..) Pretty wide open.. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and making it very accessible for most drummers..
Drumeo is literally my favorite account for drums and I learned a lot of things here but I think that they should teach is how to play songs and stuff like that
Jim Riley is a great teacher i'm sure of that. He plays it right ! My request for one of the next lesson would be to invite Richard Spaven. This would be AMAAZING
Hey Jim, you should really check it out. The whole record is great. Not only this tune but also stuff like "Indian Summer". I just ordered your book yesterday for my students after watching this video. Let's see how they like it :) Takes 6 Weeks to get here though (Amazon Germany) so I'll have to wait...
+Jim Riley you an amazing teacher. I hope to pick up the book. Ive been drumming for 10 years but it could be useful to be able to have all these styles right there.
Besides the drum lessons, I am always amazed with the drum sound! Hands down to the sound engineer!! I beg you guys to make an updated video with the new skills and equipments. All the best!
+Leonardo Enrique If I'm being honest I never should have started the lesson with that song. :-) ...you know better than I that even amongst Brazilians, people will argue the validity of an interpretation of Samba. But I appreciate your endorsement of my liberal interpretation of such a great style of music!
Ah it was hard to tell but I had a feeling it was a Supralite 14X8 I suppose? I made a mistake by selling my 5.5 to by an early 80s Acrolite. I like the Acrolite but I loved the Supralite I will go back to it. BTW you're a blessing for aspiring drummers. Your passion for teaching alone is addictive.
would that work if you guys had each your own my at the drum volume so the guests would be able to talk while druming? (just asking) Thanks for inviting Jim, loved it
I REALLY enjoy listening to this style of music. Not only the drumming but the entire style of music. Does anyone by any chance know any more great songs that are similar to this, that I can check out? I would really appreciate any, thanks in advance!
That drum set though, it seems more comfortable to play with like that having the toms right in front of your snare not on top of the bass drum. I gotta try that.
I've been setting up that way for years, and love it. It came from a number of reasons, along with just trying out different things. One thing I love about it, is that when you take away the high tom, you already have a traditional four piece configuration, which is what I most often encounter playing house kits. I've come to think of it that way..my kit foundation is the four piece, then I can add a high tom, or even an extra floor tom w/o changing it. So, even when I'm playing with four toms, my basic four piece is a part of that.
Hello, Mr. Riley. I'm sorry if somebody asked you this question already, there's a lot of comments. Do you include in your book Gospel? Thank you and may God the Lord bless you!
Not as an individual genre. I think you would agree that the idea of gospel is more about the message than the actual grooves. For instance the song cannot be a gospel song if it promotes the worship of satin even if it sounds like a Gospel song, right? So having said that there are many feels that I use throughout the book that apply to gospel drumming. particularly in the dance section....

There is a detailed chart but it's not a transcription so no fills. All of the charts (124 of them) are available as a free download for everyone who buys the book.
Thanks Jim. Is the fill at 2:36 six-stroke rolls into 32nd note triplets? It's ridiculously smooth and I love how you get around to the floor tom with it.
That is a Roland Spd-sx. That is where the tracks were triggered from on this performance. Also you can hear a timbale sound that I am also playing on this pad during the Samba track..great piece of equipment!

The definition of a pro/bad-ass. Jim is the man! I can't believe some people don't know about his playing and who he is.
So this guy is my drum teacher and he is just phenomenal in every aspect! Born to be a great teacher.
Wasn't he with rascal flatts I thought I see him on a drum magazine or modern drummer magazine at a Hastings store

the slow rock is so freaking groovy and thick. it is amazing
Georgey Gaming, music, etc. Any clue which song it is 🤔
I love listening to and watching Jim play - such energy - it is just infectious!
I know eh,I went down to my kit and practiced right after the video.Take care every one .
This is just great in a sense! Jim has proven to be a very versatile drummer and musician.

I don't think anyone has as much fun playing as this guy.
Dom the happy drummer is one.Jim is an inspiration.
always a pleasure to see this guy perform....but that snare.....wow
Thank you!!
The snare is a Ludwig Supralite...nice drum and not very expensive!
Do you play the 14 X5.5 ,6.5 or 8?
not 100% sure but looks like 6.5
Κωνσταντίνος Δήμος thanks! I'm really thinking about buying it.
Definitely amongst my top 2 or 3 drummers. Great role model, as I am 14 and plan to play for the rest of my life. I definitely look up to this guy.
that naningo track is bananas... Jim is great!!
By far my favorite one on this channel.
Thank you!!
I liked how he said "BOP" on most every snare hit on the slower rock tune :) Made me smile!
Can't help it! :-)
"...if you don't love playing simple solid time then, ya know, being a professional drummer may not be the thing you wanna do."

This is a great Book, one of my favourites.... really interesting
Jim is quite simply an awesome talent with a tool box that covers everything that matters. If one can play like Jim (you will be prepared to earn money as a working drummer). Personally, I have much work to do regarding diversity in genres. I primarily focus on only my FAVORITE: Modern Country
Definitely this was the lesson I learned the most!!! awesome drummer!
Love this guy. Fun energetic and knows his SHIZZLE!
I've been wokring from this book for a few years now. It's great. CDs are really helpful.
What an amazing musician!

You are welcome...that is my goal :-)
Drumeo is literally my favorite account for drums and I learned a lot of things here but I think that they should teach is how to play songs and stuff like that
They teach songs sometimes on drumeo edge, I had a 30 days trial (was amazing) and i saw some full song lessons
the first song was so gr8 i was dancing all the way!
I don't know why I never thought to play the train beat as 8ths in the right hand like Jim does. Genius!
bought the book :) we had it in sweden thanks jim. naningo is my favourite song
great feel, really blends with the tracks in a satisfying way
I just bought it. Can't wait to get started.
A great drummer who was good friends with two of the best Rock drummers ever.....Jeff Porcaro and Neil Peart.
Jim sure gets around ,this was so needed by me ,I learned a lot today.
Jim Riley, you're my new favorite drummer!!!
Thank you brother!!
Jim Riley is a great teacher i'm sure of that. He plays it right !
My request for one of the next lesson would be to invite Richard Spaven. This would be AMAAZING
Thank you!!
I love this channel, so many awesome drummers giving super helpfull information
Jim is GREAT!!
Very solid and powerful playing!! I really love the first song. This kind of latin groove was that I looked for so long time. WOW
Well that track and 123 others are included with the book. It's an amazing value!!
Solid drummer !
Second tune very much reminds me of that Sting tune St. Augustine in Hell from the top
I should! that was one of my inspiration songs for that tune :-)
Same thing came to my mind haha those ride accents
Reminded me more of "Biplane to Bermuda". Simon Phillips tune on the Symbiosis record.

Cool...I can honestly say that I have actually never hear that Simon tune...maybe great minds really do think alike ! :-p

He's got a Gordon Cole thing going on! "You don't have to yell!" :-) Really great lesson and fantastic playing! I hope the book does really well!
Sorry, I tend to yell with my headphones on! :-)
I and the rest of the drum community forgive you on account of your fine contribution. Looking forward to getting the book!

Semplicemente fantastico!!
Awesome lesson!
Love the samba great job !
The fill for the first song was extremely musical
Great.
Todo indica que esta va a ser una magnifica lección ;)
Good beat
Es bueno y es lo que necesitaba, no soy baterista pero escribir baterias midi igual demanda mucho aprendizaje de bateristas, saludos.
Yes.
Fantastic snare sound. REMO CS? So good!!!
This is why I want to become proficient at Latin drumming, because guys that play that have some of the best fucking chops on the planet.
They play with chop sticks?
Awesome!
Nice Cool!!!
wonderful
dat brazilian song!
made me proud hahaha
would that work if you guys had each your own my at the drum volume so the guests would be able to talk while druming? (just asking) Thanks for inviting Jim, loved it
Very good Mr. Jim!!
Excellent!
Lol Jared's face when he was asked to clap along 😁😂
to the haters, 35:30. "What I'm trying to do with this book is to create really working versions".
I REALLY enjoy listening to this style of music. Not only the drumming but the entire style of music. Does anyone by any chance know any more great songs that are similar to this, that I can check out? I would really appreciate any, thanks in advance!
More so like the first samba, I mean. Fast paced and so nice.
So which track are you referring?
+Jim Riley the Brazilian samba.
I want this book
Amazon/Indigo has the book for way cheaper
Wow, those Ludwigs sound open and fresh!!!

It's very ergonomics and gives proper priority to the ride cymbal positioning .
Richard spaven on drumeo would be amazing
Amazing is low.
Spaven!! Yeah!
Reinis Zariņš Yes!
Reinis Zariņš pretty nice one!
'tis a good one indeed
Gotta love that ludwig sound
The bass drum looks deep
Hi Jim, great lesson..question: were you using the Mozambique bell pattern on the cymbal, the way Gadd does on that samba groove?
Jim Riley: The Rock Lee of drumming
No way as way.
cool
Great Lesson!!, THank You!!
Any chances getting Chris Dave?? Would be really dope!
You don't have a comment about Jim?
This video makes me want a set of Ludwig drums 😛
Acho que está na hora do Kiko Freitas ir no drumeo mostrar o que é samba de vdd haha
Hey Jim,
nice video!
What's your exact cymbal setup? They sound very nice.
Thank you ;)
🙂 TASTY!! 🙂
Track 75 is the half time shuffle
Silly comment really but the White Socks makes it Much easier to see what is happening with both feet.
Awesome. Y'all should do a lesson/video with Chad Butler of Switchfoot.
j'aime bien le son de son Ludwig
Mais oui mon ami ,cest formidable .
Can someone tell me what the unit is under his hihat??

That is because right now I'm concentrated on playing the conga drums, but I enjoy the drum kit and play it when is needed as well. Do you know of a conga player/percussionist that will have a similar book like yours? Do you travel to teach at a clinic/workshop? If you do, when would you be coming to the southern CA area? Thank you, Mr. Riley!
+Cesar De Leon Franco
I will definitely work on a workshop in SoCal!!
+Jim Riley
Thank you, Mr. Riley!
richard spaven or chris dave please :)
What about Jim? No comment on this video ?
Is this a book for evry drummer or just for beginners? I have a feeling that the book is gonna be to simple for me or am i wrong?

Does the Survival Guide contain the complete sheet music for the Brazilian Samba including fills or is it just an overview of the beats?
There is a detailed chart but it's not a transcription so no fills. All of the charts (124 of them) are available as a free download for everyone who buys the book.
Thanks Jim. Is the fill at 2:36 six-stroke rolls into 32nd note triplets? It's ridiculously smooth and I love how you get around to the floor tom with it.
What is the electronic console that is near his Hi Hat? What does that do for him? Is that how he's getting his music?
That is a Roland Spd-sx. That is where the tracks were triggered from on this performance. Also you can hear a timbale sound that I am also playing on this pad during the Samba track..great piece of equipment!
Thank you for the response, Jim. I am expecting delivery on a Roland TD25KV set today that comes with something like it.
