I'm almost 2 years into growing out numerous Tosai. At some point, I do observe growing issues on fish at certain "critical density". There seems to be some behavioral triggers from the Koi when there's too many fish despite good mechanical/biological filtration. No matter how much I feed some fish simply do not grow. I'm talking about large density like 250-300 babies in a 3500 gallon pond.
You probably already know, when there are too many fish, certain female fish despite having eggs, will not mate. Even males will not mate if there are too many fish as they will "perceive" threats of the eggs being eaten.
So there are definitely some environmental factors that trigger behaviors in Koi, from feeding, growing, and breeding.
