My all time favorite ship. Sailed on QE2 three times 1973, 1994 and April 2008.

--Sailed on her in 1983 from New York to Southampton. Passenger count: only 1/3 full, which, as a passenger, was nice.
--Good food, good service. As an American, I enjoyed 4pm tea time. Strange to be out in the middle of nowhere, nothing visible on the horizon, and sitting down to a 5-course meal.
--One of her boilers was lost in mid-Atlantic, so in order to maintain passenger services, they cut her speed. We arrived in Southampton 6 hours late. Boat train to London was cancelled.
--That was my "trans-Atlantic crossing" for this life time.

The 1976 engine room fire also blackened and warped the sheet metal of the original form of the funnel. The warped sheet metal is still visible today in Dubai as part of the rebuilt form of the funnel dating from the 1986/7 re-engining refit. This warping really catches the light at times and is apparent in general amongst her many other scars and signs of a long life at sea.

It's amazing how much ship design progressed between the 40s and 60s. This ship from over 50 years ago still looks modern to me.

even though she is a floating hotel is she still able to possibly head out seabound or is it like Queen Mary where the enignes got removed particulary?
QE2's propulsion plant is inoperable and her propellers were cut off at the ends of the propeller shafts, the shafts then being sealed to reduce the risk of major flooding. Her propulsion plant is still in place for structural integrity and stability reasons, to avoid the same problems Queen Mary has had. Her lifeboats and davits have been removed, not to mention all the other systems she had to be a seagoing ship have either been removed, replaced by systems geared to shore services, or are also long since inoperable like her propulsion plant. She is also long since out of class and long since out of abiding by the multitude of ever stricter regulations that govern seagoing passenger ships. Finally, she has old ship issues which would prevent her ever being seagoing again, at which point you'd be better off time and money wise building a replica. These old ship issues were also factors in her retirement in 2008.
As a former passenger with many happy memories, and QE2 being my all time favourite ship, I would love nothing more for her to be able to sail again and to be able to experience that again, but it will never happen and she has earnt her retirement after sailing a record 5.6 million nautical miles, being pushed harder than most ships for most of that time, and making records that still stand today and will stand for many years to come.
The next Queen would be Queen Anne after Mary 2 I guess.

Just a question I've always had about QE2. From what I've heard, she was never referred to as "RMS Queen Elizabeth 2", only as "SS Queen Elizabeth 2", and then "MS Queen Elizabeth 2" after she was re-engined. Does anyone have a definite answer? It's always bugged me as to whether or not QE2 carried the Royal Mail Ship title.
Well that’s because the QE2 isn’t a fully steamer. Rms stands for royale steamer ship and it was a mini cruise ship. SS stands for steamship that’s because it doesn’t rely on steam that much and MS stands for motor ship because it relays fully on motor

I believe she did carry the RMS title, similar to how the QM2 carries it today; not as a functioning mail ship necessarily, but simply as an honorary title :)

I was crying while watching the video. This ship is full of history! Great decision to sell it to Dubai and turn it into a Hotel and Museum so we can always revisit its history.

Her Majesty actually seemed a bit self-conscious at naming this large ship after herself; I do love QEII.
Being overflown by a large number of ship-killing Buccaneers seemed quite ominous.

The Bloody Falklands were originally Les Malounes, French, so all the fine Argentine work in reducing the RN was, inevitably, misguided, as are all those who advocate a change in sovereignty.
My understanding is that the ship was not named after Queen Elizabeth II (note Roman numerals) but was named as a successor to the previous Queen Elizabeth ship. Hence the Arabic 2. The ships full name is Queen Elizabeth Two. No doubt, experts will be able to ratify or correct this statement

Such a handsome ship! Sadly I had a fairly rotten cruise on her. This was in part because Carnival had just taken Cunard over, and the crew were not a happy bunch, which unfortunately, showed big time! Shame!
