    RIP Chain Casting in patch 1.05 (discussed at 4:32)
    Getting rid of this entirely instead of tweaking it is a mistake, in my opinion. Sometimes "glitches" can enhance the depth of your game, and this was the perfect example of one. Spellcasting is much more bland now.

    • @ineligible2267
      @ineligible2267 Před rokem +114

      I thought it was a feature considering it seemed to follow some kind of rough convention around which type of spell could be chain casted with what (although some 'chains' were outright bugged to not have an animation and/or a tiny hitbox, likely never intended)
      I used to chain Catch Flame into Magma Breath in pvp, which would catch a panic roll but was never by any means a true combo if you timed the roll slightly later - same thing with Swift Glintstone Shard into Comet

      It really is unfortunate. Still, there are some spells and incantations that can be performed immediately after performing an action.
      To add on to the crouch melee, crouching before using the aforementioned spells and incantations is a good way to get the faster spell animations very quickly. Black Flame Blade is great for this since it's a great buff with such a sadly short buff time. Only 9 seconds or so. It's meant to be cast quickly, so crouching before buffing takes almost no time.

    Here is a neat note: Margit's Shackle and Mogh's Shackle have a couple extra uses outside of their boss battles. They reveal illusionary walls within a radius, but also they lower and raise the flamethrower towers you find in catacombs within their radius, and since you need to hit a flamethrower tower in Auriza hero's grave, then you can use a shackle. You can stand in one of the holes beneath the 2 chariots and use it and watch as they get destroyed.

  • @WynterLegend
    @WynterLegend Před 2 lety +842

    I've come to find some effects upon weapons are stronger than others:
    Bloodflame on a weapon with bleed; not only does it count as fire damage, igniting foes vulnerable to fire. But, it increases the bleed stacking phenomenally. Frighteningly potent on the Hook Claws, for reasons described below.
    Any Status Effect ability added to a Weapon (Poison, Rot, Hemorrhage, or Frostbite) will apply to both Fists or Claws when "Two Handing" (dual wielding) them. The fact most attacks hit twice is the fastest way to apply the status effect. Just remember to apply your Status Effect Buff (Frost Armament, Bloodflame, Poison/Rot/Blood Grease) to your Fist/Claws in the Right Hand, then switch to "Two Handing" those.
    When using Ashes of War, some are hit or miss with applying a weapon's special features.
    For example: Great Stars or the Celebrant's Skull. Normally, it *needs* to be *the weapon, itself*, that hits. HOWEVER, certain skills, Golden Land and Gravitas DO APPLY the special effect of the two mentioned weapons. Each hit of Golden Land (slam, burst, darts, after-swing) each will apply the HP restoring effect from Great Stars. Gravitas, used in a mass of enemies, with the Celebrant's Skull, will grant 20 runes for each enemy hit.
    Bleed/Frostbite is a deadly combination that effects anything not made of rock. Spiked Cestus, Star Fist, or Hook Claws. It is surprisingly effective against the Godskin bosses.
    Sleep is a bizarre status effect, but can be used in an absolutely obnoxious tactic for anything that can be put to Sleep, and Critical Hits can be garnered: Sword of St. Trina
    Sure, St. T's sword isn't impressive for damage, but it can trivialize fights with it's Skill: Mists of Slumber. Slap an enemy that can be tranquilized with it, then let it take a quick nap, swap to your high critical weapon, that applies a different effect (Bleed/Frostbite is nasty) and crit with that, applying a higher amount of Bleed/Frostbite on the critical.
    Finally, there's another nasty thing I'm not sure the devs have noticed: the Mimic Tear doesn't run out of FP/Mana. If you want a tank that can also heal itself, give it a weapon with Prayerful Strike, a Shield with no skill, Shabriri's Woe (as you stated), Greatshield Talisman, and 2 Talismans of your choice to fit the situation.
    If you have read all of my ramblings here, I thank you for taking that time to read it, and hope that it is helpful to you. I hope you have a sparkling day.

    About the spell dodge on enemies: since they're just reading your input and not actually reacting to the projectile, you can get them to dodge into your spell with a bit of practice. The longer the windup of your ranged attack, the easier it is to perform. I find it particularly strong on ice spear

    • @GaiaGhost
      @GaiaGhost Před 2 lety +35

      It really annoys me how the enemy reactions in this are immediate button input reads. Makes it so hard to fight intuitively and promotes a sort of bait n cheese playstyle (not saying that's what you're doing) I love the game and everything but it just irks me.

    • @curatedmemes9406
      @curatedmemes9406 Před 2 lety +40

      @@GaiaGhost From a game design perspective, it's a really tricky situation. You want enemies to react to what the player is doing, in order to make combat feel appropriately varied and perhaps more realistic. An intelligent opponent, after all, will not just fire off random sequences of attacks hoping that you'll mess up and walk into one.
      I think a bit of input reading is justified, as long as it's done properly. However, when the effects of input reading occur too soon after the button press, or happen too consistently, it ceases to feel like an adversary noticing what you're doing during battle and responding to it. Instead, it looks and feels robotic and unintuitive.
      The most obvious input reading I've noticed in Elden Ring is how enemies dodge projectiles. This isn't a big deal by any means, as it's incredibly easy to mitigate by using spells that have a delayed effect, or by just going in with a melee weapon. I just don't like how obvious it is that I'm causing the monster I'm fighting to yeet itself to the right every single time I press a button.
      Personally, I think the developers wanted to nerf the effectiveness of ranged attacks against certain enemies, but didn't want to invest a lot of extra time into making a more advanced projectile avoidance AI. Which is understandable, but it does look goofy as fuck when it happens like five times in a row.
      Aside from that, the only other input reading I've seen is how some bosses instantly transition from a "walking" phase (during which they move slowly towards the player to close distance), to a "jogging" or "running" phase (where they move much faster and prime themselves to attack when within range), the moment I start trying to heal. It's something I'm aware of, but it doesn't feel awkward, at least to me.
      I'd be interested to hear the immediate button reads you noticed. It's probably something I just didn't pick up on for whatever reason.

    • @deadlyqueen7858

      Godskin Apostle's fireball and Malenia's thrust are literally bound to your heal button. Malenia's thrust is significantly rarer to be bound but when it happens it's really annoying.
      Obviously projectile dodges
      Whenever fighting a humanoid enemy with the capability to roll you aren't getting any hits, ever. They will roll everything if your attacks come out fast enough or too slow.

    • @pilot3605
      @pilot3605 Před 2 lety +2

      @@GaiaGhost the thing is, I don't do what I described in my post with the intention of dunking on the ai, but when the enemy dodges literally when I press L2 and i can still tilt the stick to hit them with the attack, I will do it.
      You could say that I'm taking advantage of the input reading yes, but I don't see what else to do lol

    • @GaiaGhost
      @GaiaGhost Před 2 lety +10

      @@curatedmemes9406 If anything their projectile dodges feel like they *are* just reacting to the move, not button inputs. Key example is ancient lightning spear, or frenzied burst, you can charge it up and many enemies will not act until the projectile fires.
      However, you can go into most boss fights and after they do their opening combo, will often do nothing if you don't. (Some exceptions like serpent.) And as soon as you press an attack button they generally respond with the worst possible action for you, immediately.
      I've spent a lot of time playing solo, underlevelled, with a melee build. finishing my first rl1 run now. You really pick up on it when every move counts. I got margit to hold his club in upper attack position for like 15 seconds by simply not attacking. You can bait malenia by swinging a melee wpn from far away (even waterfowl ) similar thing with godskin duo and black flame (parry it back, easy cheesy win). The weapon is nowhere near them, they are not reacting to that. The game just reads attack and responds with what's most likely to hit you. And that can be turned against them.
      Just try periodically doing nothing after a fight starts, then try baiting them to you instead of you being the aggressor.

    A note on the weather "affecting spell damage" - it actually affects spell resistance. So rain doesn't make lightning spells stronger and fire spells weaker; it makes lightning resistance weaker, and fire resistance stronger. Also this happens to your character too, so you will be weaker to lightning spells while in the rain, and stronger to fire. Rolling in water does the same.

      Is there a difference?

    • @TheKripox
      @TheKripox Před 2 lety +48

      Clarifying further, it has nothing to do with spells, it is all fire and lightning damage regardless of source, including ashes of war and elemental weapon infusions, thrown pots, perfumes and what have you.
      There are 2 separate and stackable ways to get the effect, standing in water and being wet. You are wet if it is raining, or if you use a dodge roll in water or some kind of attack or effect douses you in it. So, if it is raining OR you stand in water, fire damage goes down and lightning goes up. If you are both standing in water AND it is raining, you get even weaker fire/even stronger lightning. And if it is not raining, but you roll in water and then walk out of the water afterwards, you will still get the fire nerf and lightning buff for as long as you are wet, even after getting back onto dry land.
      Basically, if there's any water of any kind near you it is best to assume that the effect applies. You can also check your status screen to see how much these resitances change.

    another tip rarely mentioned regarding chariots is the ash of war Raptor of the Mists. It's kind of like Mist Raven prosthetic from Sekiro. Basically whenever the chariot comes to you just use it and it'll just pass through you. This has a very short recovery time as well, so you can use it even at instances where the chariot almost immediately turns and comes back. This helps you in passing through the graves without ever needing to go to safety corners even once. This is how I got through most of the hero graves including the Lava one, didn't even need to find the way to ride the chariot or backstep spam. Although backstep is great used in combination with this ash of war at that last lava section, everywhere else you can pretty much keep sprinting and using this AoW whenever the chariot approached.

    I love the content!!! A nice key feature of Elden Ring that most people don’t take note of especially early in the game is the glowing skulls littered across the open world. Every one of them drops a Golden Rune, usually just a Golden Rune(1). And most people will be like “that’s only 200 Runes,” yeah but those add up especially early in the game farming. They’re a lot of them and they always replenish in the world after fast traveling or resting at a site of grace. Torrent instantly breaks them riding over them and simply pressing the Event Action button picks them up. In a span of like twenty minutes while farming enemies and casually riding over any glowing skull I saw, I had easily 35 to 40 Golden Rune(1)’s. And 5,000 to 6,000 runes can make all the difference especially early on building up levels. I know most people probably know this trick already, but I’ve watched a lot of streams where people are completely ignoring the glowing skulls and going about trying to just farm enemies alone. Which breaks my heart cause I’ll jokingly keep track of the glowing skulls I see people completely ignore, and the thousands of runes people ignore just laying around them is sad. So if anyone who doesn’t know this mechanic is reading this, I hope it’ll help with your Elden Ring experience. Please VaatiVidya, never stop creating amazing content. Your lore and storytelling are superb as always. Another awesome video!!!!

    - Bolt of Gransax's special attack, Ancient Lightning Spear, is also too fast to be dodged by Malenia.
    - Black Flame attacks deal % amount of health damage, so they will stay relevant for later NG+ cycles. However, it's still fire damage so enemies who are resistant to it, like Mohg, can be a challenge still. Have a backup.
    - Having high enough poise (close to or 100) means you can walk normally in rot puddles that force slow walk, like the one near the Drainage Chanel grace in Haligtree. Now, this could actually require some confirmation from someone, but my 100 poise heavy character walks normally there.

    8:18 To add to the armor effects, one other armor that gains or loses a skill when altered is Alberich's Robes. Unaltered they have the effect of boosting the damage of Blood sorceries, and altering it makes it lose this effect.
    The special effect is also shared with the hat and the gauntlets and the descriptions on all of them mention that this is because they're imbued with Red Glintstone which were formed via blood sacrifices - thereby strengthening the thorn spells. However, altering the robes removes the decorated cape on them which had all of the Red Glintstones embedded in it. Removing the cape removes the stones which removes their ability to strengthen blood magic. This is also further reinforced by the fact that the hat can ALSO be altered but, since the Red Glintstone is imbued in the headwrappings rather than the hat itself altering it doesn't remove the effect since only the hat is removed when making the alteration but the headwrappings stay.

      You can also charge this spell. This is incredibly useful, as it makes you able to chain this spell with itself. The charged version does more damage, has a faster projectile speed, and takes a lot longer to fire. You can cast 3 charged ones 3 uncharged ones, and they will unleash a barrage of spells hitting close together. Works well for smaller enemies in pve that take 2 hits, as you can chain a charged then noncharged and have them hit at the exact same time, not gaining aggro while casting. You can also use this chaining in pvp, if you get the timing right, you can make them fire at such timing as to hit right after an enemy dodge. Try it, it's one of the main reasons it's one of my favorite spells.

    (Referring to 5:08) Its not just Catch Flame, this trick works with, as far as I can tell, nearly every incantation that can chain together its own attacks; Stone of Qurranq, Bloodflame Talons, even the heavier hitting and slow wind-up attacks, such as Black Blade and Theordorix's Magma (Though some spells make more sense to chain together than others.) This leads to kind of cool combos, such as chaining Black Blade with Theordorix's Magma (Might be useful for pvp?) However, this does not seem to work for spells like Agheel's flame and its ice, scarlet rot, and magic equivalents. (Nor the "Lesser" versions of those spells) (Feel free to test them out though, perhaps I made a mistake.)
    I assume this is possible because the game is being tricked into thinking the two spells in question are part of the same chain, which is the very assumption that lead to me testing this with Bloodflame Talons and Stone of Qurranq, and eventually Black Blade and Theordorix's Magma. This is why you can only cast once when chaining Black Blade or Theordorix's Magma off of Catch Flame/Stone of Qurranq/Bloodflame Talons, you're starting on the second half of their respective combo's, which by necessity are faster than their startups.

  • @uromaki
    @uromaki Před 2 lety +128

    A good way to looking up spells/incantations that can be chained is by looking for descriptions that say "can be cast repeatedly" or "can be cast for a follow up attack".
    For example you can do one cast of Carrion Slicer and chain cast into Gavel of Haima to shortcut into Gavel last hit.
    Same can be done with Honed Bolt and Black Blade for the incantation side of things, or Bestial Sling into Black Blade.
    The far the most funny, yet useless one I discovered was Carian Slicer into Shatter Earth, this one will follow up the Slicer with a small Aoe Explosion around the character, of course it being a stonedigger sorcery it is fairly weak, I call it the Carian Fart.

    Additional tip for everyone who loves their Mimic Tear: Equip the Raw Meat Dumpling on yourself, and the Mimic will be able to use it(them) as a heal that DOES NOT give it the Poison status effect (up to 3 times total for a hefty chunk of HP). You can also equip other items, but unfortunately the A.I. goes full dummy with them and starts using them more than actually fighting, so it CAN be done, but it's not then best of ideas. A good idea, however, is to give the mimic HP-regen Ashes of War weapons because they will absolutely use them (and abuse them, even).

      Again, for me personally. As a single player game, you can decide to play however you want. I like to try to find this super delicate balance between feeling strong but still being challenged. Which, I'm sure some gatekeepers would already deny me entry just for the bloodhound 10 alone.

    @EldestOrion Před 2 lety +120

    There is actually a probably unintended interaction with the chain casting that takes it from useful to broken in some cases. Casting any quick spell i.e Carian Slicer or Catch Flame *twice* into longer spells that are *only* able to be casted twice i.e Magma Breath or Gavel of Haima will make the longer spells completely skip their own animation and adopt the animation of the previously casted spell.
    In Magma Breath's case, it causes you to just immediately launch the projectile from your hand with a flick of your wrist. Its very reminiscent of Forbidden Sun from DS2.
    In Gavel of Haima or Dragonclaw's case, this will result in you slapping the air in front of you with your staff or seal with no spell effect. If you hit an enemy with your staff or seal directly though, they will take the full damage and knockdown of the respective spells. Its a very powerful slap.

    • @gelocide4924
      @gelocide4924 Před 2 lety +2

      i haven't seen anyone else anywhere talk about this, i've pulled off the slap only a couple times in pvp just trying to chain cast. i always feel like a jerk lmao, but i've had no idea how or why it was happening. you're saying if i cast catch flame twice and then dragonclaw it will do the slap?

    • @EldestOrion
      @EldestOrion Před 2 lety +7

      @@gelocide4924 Yes, and its a little weirder than I first thought. I started writing a reply to this and then I remembered that a few more spells with limited casting exist: Briars of Sin and Blade of Death. I decided to test them both and found some weird things.
      For Briars of Sin, I tested how it interacted with Pebble, Carian Slicer, and Gavel of Haima. Casting Briars works mostly as expected actually. If casted 2nd in a chain of quick spells, it will go into the 2nd and 3rd cast of Briars. If casted 3rd, it will only use the final 3rd cast. If casted 4th, it will go back to the 2nd and 3rd casting sequence. I still cant figure out how the game is tracking how many spells in a sequence you've casted, but obviously its not tracking it correctly or applying this information to other spells correctly if it leads to inconsistent or broken interactions like these. Gavel interacts with Briars similarly to other spells. It functions properly if casted 2nd, breaks if casted 3rd, and cant be casted 4th because Briar can only be casted 3 times.
      Blade of Death, or specifically how it interacts with Honed Bolt/Lightning Strike, is where things got weirder. I tested it with Catch Flame, Honed Bolt/Lightning Strike, and Bloodflame Talons. Blade of Death casted in the 3rd sequence after Catch Flame and Bloodflame Talons for some reason doesn't cost any FP, but it has the same property as the other broken spells of applying if your hand hits the enemy. If used 3rd after Honed Bolt, it actually activates ANOTHER bug where the top half of your body's animations desync from your bottom's half. This seems to be a problem with Honed Bolt/Lightning Strike, though. In this case, you actually do the full follow-up animation, swing the sword around, and fire the beam, but you're on the ground the entire time and you break your spine. Dragonclaw functions the same way. This is... almost how it should interact, minus the broken animations. Since it is broken like this though, the only different property I could think of is that you *are* on the ground the entire time, so maybe getting hit out of it early wouldn't result in you being knocked prone. I also dont know how this affects hyper armor startup. Its hard to time an enemy's attack to be after I've hit it twice with Honed Bolt or Lightning Strike but before I would normally get hyper armor during Blade of Death or Dragonclaw.
      Magma Breath also functions the same as the other spells when used with Honed Bolt/Lightning Strike, but its less noticable because you are already grounded while using that spell. Your legs dont move like how they should, but you look mostly the same.
      I'm starting to question whether or not we'd ever get a sorcery and incantation hybrid casting tool, because I do not think the animations would actually be able to function properly in such a case.

      @@EldestOrion damn thank u for the in depth response lol, i've done some similar testing but not nearly as much, i will have to look at those spells tomorrow. do u think the weird slap animation is by any chance an intended feature? seems hard to believe but my friend that i play with is convinced it's just a secret mechanic lol

    • @EldestOrion
      @EldestOrion Před 2 lety +1

      @@gelocide4924 I dont think its intended. The slap can still combo into the second cast of the spell. So instead of skipping the first cast to go into the second faster cast like is probably intended, its attempting to use some faster animation for the first spell cast that doesnt exist, breaking the animation. And these casting phases ARE distinct, as shown by Blade of Death having 2 totally separate animations for its combo. In the best case scenario, they fix the issue but also properly allow you to do the full 2-3 spell casts of a spell while using the faster second-cast variant for the first cast as well. But it would probably end up being that you just skip the first casting animation for spells like that.
      Also, I forgot to mention but Honed Bolt/Lightning Strike is also itself bugged. Casting Catch Flame twice into Honed Bolt will cause you to slap the air and then lightning strikes. So something else weird is going on with the animations for spells that dont even have limitations to their number if casts. I also didnt test Bestial Sling, so I may do that later as well.

    • @EldestOrion
      @EldestOrion Před 2 lety +1

      Final addendum: I tested Beast Sling and Stone of Gurranq. They have the same interactive properties as Catch Flame, meaning they are capable of leading into the hand slap. I also briefly tested a combo of Stone of Gurranq and Theodrix's Magma, where you cast Stone twice, then Magma, and then alternate between Stone and Magma after that. Fun, especially with a Cerulean Hidden Tear, but probably impractical to spend 15 seconds throwing rocks and giant magma balls, especially with the relatively short range of Magma Breath. You are almost like a living volcano though.

      To add to that, Morgott's second phase, where he covers the arena with his "curse", makes lightning attack more powerful too! I figured this out by using the Lightning ash of war you get in Leyndell, it made the second phase way easier, especially as you can use it two to three times during his attack that cuts the arena in quarters with golden swords

    11:25 there's no need to jump onto the rafters from above. Continue on the path as usual and you will eventually get to this area with the riderless chariot. Turn around toward where you came from, but instead of going up, drop down to a small ledge. That ledge leads to the room with bloodhound knight and a ladder that takes you to the window shown in the video. Getting on the rafters that way is much easier.
