      That's the saddest part about Dutch's character. They did a fantastic job writing Dutch in RDR2 to the point where you can tell Dutch is still wracked with grief over Arthur, Hosea and the rest of the gang even though they weren't written in the story at all before RDR2.
      The way he said, "I was." reminded me of how at the end of RDR2, Dutch didn't even reply to John and walked off without all the money. He has nothing to live for except just fighting against the law, especially since everybody he cared about has left him and his last surviving surrogate-son (John) wants him dead or in jail. Leaving Dutch alive in jail would literally be worse to him than dying by a noose since he's truly that wracked with grief. It also helps explain why he recalled his conversation with Arthur as his last words before just killing himself since John didn't have it in him to kill Dutch.

    • @ThexDynastxQueen

      @@callmehanson9466 Yeah, to me RDR1 Dutch showcased a man that people clearly have respect for, learned from and are drawn to but became broken as John says. Yet even so he's still charismatic and there's some truth to his words and that at least to me it was easy to get why John trusted him and even after everything still couldn't shoot him. Then even when John has him cornered he doesn't lash out, he gives a final warning to John that was true.
      Thats really amazing characterization, storytelling and staying power for a guy we only see ~10mins of. Man had me fangirl screaming in my web design class when the 1st RDR2 trailer dropped off of just ~10mins of screen time in 2010 lol.

      @@callmehanson9466 The beauty of Dutch's character with how it was written in RDR2, is that you can't tell if he is driven entirely by grief by the time he gives up the money, or if he has completely lost it to paranoid delusion (because of the betrayals he experienced), and so he has begun to see everything as a trap and a threat to his self-preservation. Keeping the money is just another reason for someone to go after him, but it also the reason he lost everyone who cared about him, so it's tainted in that way as well.

    Rdr1 has that old school spaghetti western grit to it even though it takes place in the future of the universe, terrible people of many classes and an outlook into what once was and what modern civil can do to someone
    Rdr2 has this polished beauty that allures the player into a lifestyle these people love and an environment you can’t but be obsessed with

    i played rdr2 first and when i realised it was dutch in this mission i was like OMG and was waiting for one of his famous speeches, but no. just blatant and transparent violence without a cause, though he still claims there is a bigger picture. it really drove home how bad he had gotten after rdr2.

    • @wisdumcube
      @wisdumcube Před rokem +15

      @@father3dollarbill No, it's amazing writing, because he always "was" weak mentally, is completely self-centered, and driven by self-interest and greed, despite his best efforts to hide it. Dutch abandoned his "sons" for the new guy (Micah) because of how powerful his ideas were to Dutch, and how well he twisted the idea of loyalty into a role of (feigned) blind subservience to protect Dutch's ego, while serving his own interests. Arthur and John were loyal but not able to feed Dutch's ego when he made mistakes or was led astray by Micah, and they basically begged him to see reason, which he saw as a lack of faith and eventually betrayal. And for that "transgression", he abandoned them. Dutch didn't actually like Micah more but the idea of him, especially the idea of him that uplifted Dutch and covered for his insecurities about his leadership. Dutch wanted to believe the lies Micah was telling him about himself, and the ideal no-compromise-outlaw-life that they both supported, of which Dutch deluded himself into thinking was possible to maintain into the modern era. Dutch could not find a way out in a world where the old west was dying, and he was not selfless enough to turn himself in to save the rest of the gang, so he chose to live in a fantasy: one where the next big score would save them and allow them to settle down, while at the same time wanting to continue to indulge in the "free" life of an outlaw and romanticizing it.
      Micah just revealed the Dutch who always was there. He had a silver tongue and a ton of charisma but not much else. He was a grifter and conman: a true emperor with no clothes of the old west. Dutch was always like Micah underneath the surface, but he had been surrounded by competent men who protected him from himself and made a lot of his dreams a reality. And he was lucky they were mostly honorable people who did not manipulate him the same way he tried to manipulate everyone else, that is, until Micah came along and told him what he wanted to hear and then he started to do things against his better judgment. Micah fed into his delusions of grandeur until he eventually succumbed to the same destructive tendencies.

      I was second guessing myself till I did a second playthrough and found "Dutch's speech notes" in Horseshoe. That and his little snide comments about thinking Arthur was going to betray him in the end, the way he continuously treated Molly etc etc. Hosea's death, while it impacted him emotionally, wasn't really his tipping point. Hosea just wasn't around to make him see reason anymore.
      I might even go as far as to say that Dutch is a textbook narcissist. That doesn't make him an incredibly and obviously evil person, but it does mean that he's not as genuine and caring as people seem to think he is. Everything he does that's viewed as "caring" is either planned and premeditated (like his speech at the beginning of the game) or used as a tactic to keep people close to him and viewing him as the only person who is kind enough to give them a chance and a "good life" (calling people son, saying that they're the only one he can trust, calling them a family etc)
      In Guarma, everyone was focused solely on survival. He didnt need to be kind for everyone to follow him. It was either follow him or die, when that wasn't really the case back in America. But I think people are connecting that behaviour with him grieving when in reality, he's always been like that, he was just smart enough to know that no one was going to follow him if he behaved like that.

    Dutch is the perfect example of the saying "Absolute power corrupts absolutely." From the lore prior to the RDR2 mentioned in the RDR games, Dutch was brave, noble, charitable, and basically a Wild West Robinhood, taking from the rich and civilized and giving to and aiding the poor. He killed only when absolutely necessary and usually to directly save innocent lives or that of the people under his protection. In RDR2 for the first few chapters we see him still embody this ideology for the most part aside from what we're told about in the lore about how the Blackwater ferry heist changed him and how he uncharacteristically murdered an innocent woman. This was when his gang was likely at its most powerful. He felt that he had to display his power and take a tighter grip on his authority. When people start to question his capabilities as the story progresses, he becomes more spiteful to those challenging him. He had truly felt a dictators status. Even though he still had people advising him as dictators also had historically, the final say was his and ultimately they would listen to him despite their own judgement. Once the gang in the later story really started almost rebelling and directly questioning his goals, sanity, and motives, he started becoming the RDR1 Dutch. After having such authoritarian-like control, even if he wasn't cruel or brutal during this, he had felt power slipping away. He traded away rationality, morality, and kinship for blind loyalty. (Disconnecting with Arthur, Susan, and Jon in exchange for Micah, Bill, and Javier) Hosea was the only true friend he had that he didn't willingly depart from. Hosea was the last thing keeping his morale compass from pointing completely south. The only voice of reason left and the only thing keeping him from truly limitlessly indulging in his own ambitions at any cost. Once he was killed, the only person he'd let even come close to putting a check on his choices and power was gone where he inevitably fell victim to listening only to his yes-men. The end of RDR2 was when the power starting corrupting at an accelerated pace as there was nothing there to stop it or slow it down. This is the most by-the-book example of the power corruption formula.

      Well put.
      There's the idea that Micah corrupted him, but Micah was like the devil on your shoulder, just speaking your own worst instincts to you. Dutch was in freefall at that point and Micah was telling him to keep going.

    • @cheesypower3282
      @cheesypower3282 Před rokem +5

      Honestly, I prefer the saying "Power doesn't corrupt, but it does reveal."
      Dutch was, at his core, obsessed with control- his talk of ideals might have prettied it up, but the real reason he was so dead-set on continuing to fight against the government and the taming of the West was because it was change he didn't like, but was powerless to stop or control.
      He dressed it up, put on the mantle of the gentleman thief, personified himself as charitable and brave and noble- and he legitimately acted on those trappings. Power didn't corrupt him, it just stripped away all the fancy clothes and lofty ideals to reveal a man, utterly unwilling or unable to accept that the world was changing, and that he couldn't stop it or change the world back.

    This is my favorite Dutch scene from RDR 1 or 2. He just outright admits that he wants to kill Harold and John "for sport." I mean, why the hell not? Dutch is a psychopathic killer, despite all his talk about causes and fighting for others. At least he's honest in this scene, even if he's trying to pretend to be joking.
