- One last video tribute to Bobby Hull. Hull left Chicago in 1973 and his million dollar contract with Winnipeg of the new World Hockey Association was a record at that time - immediately changing sports/hockey contracts. Hull and Gordie Howe became the main attractions of the new WHA. In 1974 the WHA took on the legendary Russian hockey team. This is the first period of game four where Bobby Hull scores three goals in 10 minutes. I’ve included all Team Canada goals that period - 3 by Hull, 1 each for Gordie Howe & Frank
Mahovlich. Btw… Hull lead ALL scorers in this 8 game series with 7 goals & 2 assists for 9 points. - Zábava
I had the privilege to meet Mr. Hull a couple of times. Rest in peace Bobby,,,great memories of a great hockey player.
Dan, I talked to him for an hour tete-a-tete, us enjoying each other's deep knowledge of two different schools of hockey. What a brilliant interlocutor and amazing personality. In the end he gave me his photo and signed on it.
I had the privilege of meeting Bobby Hull. He was my idol when I was a kid.
Mama Mia, what a fantastic 1st period by Team Canada and especially by the one and only legendary Bobby Hull, he's so fast he had the nickname The Golden Jet and he's here with 3 goals a hat trick in the 1st period and where he scored 2 goals in just 1 minute 6 seconds so fast it's beyond belief unless you see it with your own eyes. With his super cat like reflex that is faster than I can see so I gotta rewind it a few times so I can even see it. That is why Bobby Hull was the first hockey player in history to get a 1 Million dollar contract. It is an inspirational event just to watch him in action. His negotiation with the league changed sports contracts forever so that all future hockey greats owe Bobby thanks for finally getting the player to share a decent percentage of the vast amounts that the league was making off the backs of the blood, sweat and tears and a lot of injuries of the hockey players. One of the greatest things about Bobby Hull was that he would stay late after games and sign autographs for his fans. That trumps a lot of players who don't appreciate their fans. Bobby Hull was a top player and usually number 1 when there were only the Legendary Original 6 Teams in the whole NHL hockey league, until they went from 6 team to a mind boggling 12 hockey teams for the 1967-68 season then again to 18 teams by 1974 and now there are 31 teams in the NHL. So talk about watered down talent as compared to getting all the best in just 6 teams when a fan could know all the players, like myself and my 2 brothers did in the 1960's. I got to see Bobby Hull play with Chicago against the Montreal Canadians in Montreal in 1970 and i walked behind the players bench and Bobby was 1 foot away from me. Later I got to met Bobbie and talk with him for 10 minutes in 1990 when he was signing autographs at Legendary Sports Memorabilia in Toronto. I showed Bobby some of our family's collection of pictures, which were taken by a professional photographer in the Hockey league, it was an awesome collection of hundreds of top quality hockey photos a priceless collection of single players and even team photos with the Stanley Cup. Those were the days my friend. I thought they'd never end. Thanks to CZcams we can re-live them again.
Thanks for the story.
Bobby told me that a Soviet D-man Gusev, whom he called Gus, goose in English, pinpointed at the table and it all happened during intermission or before the game. I can't remember exactly when. On the table there was some kind of amount of Russian vodka and a small bowl of red caviar, all hidden by a piece of fabric, like small drapery on top of the stuff, covered. The crux of the matter is that Bobby and the Russians/Soviets had a small party the night before. I am not making it up. Bobby told me this..
Man, these guys would fly in today's skates. Most people don't realize how hard it was to perform well in those steel tube skates. Very heavy, stiff and clunky. Its a wonder how good they are in them, even tho slowish by modern standards. Equipment has really taken a quantum leap
How are modern skates better than the old skates in performance if their respective blades have the same length and same level of sharpness? Would a bit of extra weight (old skates) really hamper performance by that much?
@@msbrownbeast they were harder to skate in. That's why I didn't make the NHL
Great Bobby Hull, RIP.
I'd forgotten how soft Whitey Stapleton's hands were and what a heads up, accurate passer he was. He also had a penchant for picking up historic pucks it appears! He claims to have Henderson's puck from the series winning goal of the Summit Series and here it appears he hands the hat trick puck to the Golden Jet! Pretty cool......
5 Goals...1 by Mr. Hockey...1 by The Big M...and 3 by The Golden Jet...
Hockey heaven
Bobby Hull blew everyone away by not only playing, butalso making every person on the ice or off the ice by showin the class he showed my dad and family. Thank you so much Bobby Hull. AND, i got the pictures! 8:32 8:35
Hull and Howe were in their twilight, but look at how they played. true legends.
Howe was in his twilight. Hull still had a few prime years in him.
The WHA team was a great team especially when their age is considered. The oldest player on the Russian squad was 29, while the WHA had multiple players deep into their 30s and of course Gordie Howe was 46.
That's what I'm amazed is how Gordie was able to play against them. Of course he had the biggest hockey IQ and could adapt to anything.
This is the first time I've seen this since 1974, and it turns out the same. Unfortunately, Canada failed to score in the last 2 periods, the game ended 5-5, and the series declined from there. For those too old or too young to remember, Paul Henderson and Frank Mahovlich were in this series because they had jumped from the NHL to the Toronto Toros.
I remember watching this game. I also remember my grade 11 history teacher commenting on how well Bobby Hull played that game at school the next day.
Это ВЕЛИКИЙ хоккеист ,и это был удивительный хоккей !
you talk about Bobby Hull ?
interestingly, the Soviet coach did not think of pulling Tretiak after allowing five goals in the first period.
A few years later he pulled him after giving up two goals in the first period against a group of American kids😂
... This video sure makes the NHL stupid when they banned Hull from the '72 Summit Series . . .
Wirtz
There would be no Paul Henderson if Hull was on that team
@@buddha7178 .. Maybe Canada would not have won if that rat, Bobby Clarke, deliberately broken Kharlamov's ankle.. I'm sorry to say. .. Clarke, an embarrassment.
@@34Packardphaeton it's hockey, baby, sometimes big angry guys can broke everything. If Bobby Orr was played, may be Canada can win earlier))
Btw, I'm russian, and support our national team. But Canada win Superseries-72 with no dubt
@@buddha7178
…and Canada wouldn’t have needed a late goal to win the series.
Bobby Hull had great hair.
After Hull got his hat trick Pat Stapleton grabbed the puck lol...think he wanted it for his collection like the game winning goal puck he got in the last game in Moscow.
When a player scores three goals in one period it is called a natural hat trick.
🤓nope. When the same player scores 3 goals in a row(in the same game), that is, nobody else from either team scores during that span, that is a natural hat trick. It doesn't necessarily have to happen during a single period.
@@seanbarnes1151 ... exactly. 👍👍
A few more than 1000.
Hull a big missing part of 72 team however this was our C team
Sorry Paul Henderson BUT if Hull had been allowed to play ,no one would have ever heard of you, this was two years after the 72 series and hull had 7 goals in the first 4 games hurt his knee in this game but still played the last 4 games in Russia .He was 35 during this series . He would have played on Espo line and God knows how many goals he would have scored with him.
Is that a mop glued to the Golden Jet's skull?
The only thing missing from this party is moose vasco 😂😂
The Ruskies won the series however unlike in 1972…..
Is that Howie Meeker doing the colour?
Yep.
Yes, and he was brutal. I know, he was so beloved, but ugh...
@@MikeS29 “Now stop it right there, Michael”! Yup, you’re right.
@@MikeS29 I do not think he was brutal ? in what way? Howie was colourful and vert frank .
@@ronmailloux8655 That high pitched shouting. Awful.
jezuss Howie Meeker was annoying....
Some look porky. They sure didnt keep their body in shape during the off season.
They look weird without a helmet and the bad hair styles. And old especially Gordie Howe on this team.
These guys were letting their hair grow after the crew cuts from the 1950's and 60's. We have some bad hai cuts today plus many with ugly tattoos
It was disgusting that Hull was kept off the '72 team. It was called Team Canada NOT Team NHL!
God, this clip reminded me of how annoying Howie Meeker could be.
You would think that with all that WHA money that Hull could have gotten himself a better hairpiece.
Tretiak looks terrible here.
HOF too. Always thought he was really overrated, but for some roast he Canadian media loved him. And before people start the, “his record in world championships and international play” stuff, he would have been average at best in the NHL facing that caliber over an entire season.
Reason, not roast
He shut out the Canadians in the 2nd and 3rd periods in this game in Vancouver. 5 - 5 Final
And he carried The Soviets to victory in this series.
More goals NHL + WHA than only a few I guess. Howe, Gretzky maybe more.🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒🏒
Gretzky 940 total goals NHL and WHA, Bobby Hull 913
@@MrDuds1984 These stats are VERY misleading bc Gretzky was PROTECTED by the NHL/refs his whole career and Bobby Hull was actually TARGETED, (hooked, held, slashed), and shadowed his whole career! The 'stats' do NOT reveal that!
@@MrDuds1984 Pretty darn good
@@mr.blackhawk142 agree Gretzky was off limits and had enforcers to protect him. Hull did it all himself
@@MrDuds1984 I don’t hear many people say what you just said but it’s so true
