  • The "Tour of Cheshire" historic car rally is organised by the Knutsford & District Motor Club, and takes place annually across various different stages hosted both in Cheshire and in neighbouring counties, as was the case this year (2022).
A number of stages took place in neighbouring Shropshire this year, one of which was at the Rednal Karting Centre, a former WW2 RAF airfield. Later in the day the vintage & classic cars taking part headed back to Cheshire for further stages.
We decided to head over to Rednal in the morning and catch the cars there, then we headed across to Oulton Park for their arrival at 3pm for further timed action. The last time we headed over to Rednal was in 2019 for the Rally of the Tests event, so we knew that it'd be an interesting watch given that the same karting track would be used for the Tour of Cheshire.
A large number of classic cars took part (over 70), the oldest pair being a Ford Model A and a Bentley 3-Litre, both of which were driven with great gusto and aplomb, both flying the flag for pre-war cars.
The majority of cars though were from the 1960s, 1970s & 1980s, these included cars such as Volvo PV544 & Amazons, Ford Escort Mk1s & Mk2s, Mini Coopers, Austin A40 Farinas, MGBs, Opel Kadetts, Porsche 911s, Hillman Hunter, Imp & Avenger, Triumph 2000s, VW Golfs, Porsche 924, Triumph GT6 Mk2, TR4s/TR4As, Alfa Romeos, VW Beetle, Reliant Sabre Six, Lancia Fulvia, Datsun Z and many more.
Some drivers and navigators pressed on more than others, but it looked like everyone was enjoying themselves.
It's always neat to see older cars being used competitively, I didn't notice any significant damage on any of the cars and it's better that they're used than left sat in a garage.
Even if classic car rallying isn't really your thing, I hope this video is of interest as - unlike with a static classic car show report - the cars can be heard and seen being driven, and their distinctive engine notes (especially the straight six engines in the big Triumphs) and - in the case of the Minis - their whining straight-cut gearboxes, enjoyed.
Thanks very much for watching, please check out some of the other classic car videos now on the channel (including a few motorsport-related uploads, eg Goodwood, VSCC Loton Park etc) at the following links:

It reminds me of my age, I remember in the late 70s doing pre delivery inspection s on the three or four mk2 rs2000 that we sold in the Ford dealership where I worked. Many thanks. G.

Brilliant...loved it...funny story....in 1979 Knowsley Safari Park was a stage in the RAC Rally...I was selling cars for Heron Liverpool at the time with a company car...as part of a team of eight people we decided to take advantage of a pre race opportunity to take private cars round at race pace....little did we know that it was televised and the sales manager was watching eight of his cars being flung round the track...the Monday morning meeting was erm...not filled with joy..🙄...🤣🤣🤣🤣The message is to all future consumers that think buying a pre registered dealer car may not be a good decision...🙃

Excellent coverage of a great event, thank you. Great to see these lovely cars driven with gusto! (Hope the little Imp's troubles weren't too serious.)

Great to see this. I marshalled on this event for many years in my Mk1 MX-5. Good to see so many familiar cars. 7 VC TR4 is a replica of a works cars. Mercedes Ian Cramond #3 organises the Three Castles Rally in North Wales every June. The spinning GT6 competed in the 2020 Monte Historique in her Spitfire. The gearbox broke, but she managed to finish and get back home. I did the same event in a 1954 Daimler Conquest.

Good stuff 👍👍👍 Nice to see the cars getting a good workout instead of just polished and sat there...

The old 1950s Swedish Volvo is amazing. It can get around the course much easier than the more recent cars in age.

The old PVs handle really well, the Amazons are good too but I always felt that the earlier (narrower) cars had the edge

Lots of thrills and the occasional spill. I was thinking whilst watching the action that some of those cars are quite valuable (Pagoda top, Mercedes, for instance) and yet, they were being thrown around the circuits quite swiftly - good to see!

Yes with rising values seeing many cars pushed into de-humidified storage bags, it's refreshing that some owners still drive their cars with gusto. Thanks for watching

The driver of the Pagoda top runs the annual Three Castles Rally. I feel sorry for that car, he gives it some punishment!

@@peterbonnez Yes, it leaves me in two minds. I like to see classics being driven (Goodwood, for example) but hate to see them being abused.

Not for me thanks. I'm not a fan of motorsport at all. Just my opinion, not a complaint against anyone.

Fair enough, although it's quite mild in comparison to some motorsport, in many cases more like a brisk drive
