  • This is an attempt to explain in clinical and scientific detail the reason why I am opposed to the use of grab bars by seniors who are a falls risk. #fallsprevention #senioradvocate #aginginplace #callbeforemomfalls
We provide front door to back door and every room in-between assessments of the home to help seniors and people with disabilities maintain comfortable accessibility and safe mobility in an effort to prevent falls. Specifically, the first fall, which is most typically a fall unrelated to strength or balance and more about and obstacle that is not properly negotiated. Often times it has never been a problem until suddenly it is. There are simple ways to determine if someone is a falls risk and it's not how well they walk or how many times they can stand up or sit down from a chair. Things like medications, urgency to urinate, living alone and even diet are used as predictors to help identify people who may be at risk for a life-changing fall.
If you are a senior or care about a senior, we can easily be contacted for a consultation. Often times they are covered by insurance, or our affordable private pay rate coupled with a lifetime guarantee make it easy for anyone to ensure their home is safe and accessible.

I only use a suction grab bars in our pre-formed shower unit where we cannot drill holes into it. It is not doe use to get in and out of the shower but rather there to grab in case of slipping on the non-slip matt. What about a metal grab bar installed into the studs next to a toilet to help someone get off the toilet seat? I have a grab bar in my tile walk in shower. I use it when I sit on the shower floor to shave my legs. I lift myself up to standing using the metal grab bar in my walk in shower.

These comments highlight exactly what I was saying. My clients who are a falls risk shouldn’t be hoping the can grab a bar as they are falling. The mat is obviously an issue. Sounds like a bad idea sitting on the shower floor. Grab bars next to the toilet are typically not at the correct height or too far away from the toilet.

I agree, grab bars are horrible, they do not work! I'm having issues getting in and out of my tub, what do you recommend? I like the Mangar Portable Bath Lift Cushion for Adults however they are very expensive for some of us. Thank you for the video 🙂

I’d be interested to know about the product you mentioned. Otherwise a tub transfer bench is a $65 option that still allows for safe showering.
