I've been listening and loving these ladies since 1988. Even got close enough to them that Amy took my hand on her way off stage in Portland Maine. Ive seen them so many times I lost count.During a show at one very small venue a mentally handicapped man became disruptive standing up and walking toward the stage calling out to Amy. The staff began to approach him to remove him. Amy stopped singing and defended the man, speaking directly to him telling him thank you for his words, then asking him to sit back down, telling the staff to leave the man alone. Probably one of the best nights of his life. They are true to their lyrics and their hearts. Their music set me free. So much has changed for those of us of the same heart since 1988. I simply love them both, a lifetime favorite and catalyst for change.... Love you ladies...
Hilarie Ireland when I was little my mom handed me to amy at a show and we danced ...then I freaked out when I couldn't see my mom lol I was like 6 and tgats a grwat story! im sure people all over have great ones about how kind and badass they are is it weird to say they are like church? haha They move me like that
I met them at an album release party and Tower Records in Atlanta when Swamp Ophilia came out. They were so nice and I was so nervous. To this day that autographed CD is one of my prized posessions.
The song is great, but like most music, it's written from a hazy view of a pipe dream of what the world would be like if everyone acted exactly like you. Don't be misguided by a happy tune, there's no truth here.
@@mollycorkle6628 @mollycorkle6628 If only those dirty devils never went over and messed with the mexican people people to start with. We could live together in harmony with each and every one of us respecting the living human heart extractions that brought prosperity to the land because that's their religion, and who are we to impose? And we would be welcomed in with open loving arms. Must be awful to be realistic? To have historical statistics motivate future decisions? That's the attitude of regretless human empowerment far set apart from anarchistic cults devolution to living as animals and hating the human race as a whole out of one side of the mouth while preaching love and acceptance out of the other.
My friends and I are slowly bringing live music back, and so we've been socially-distancing in our friend's driveway - acoustic guitars, small drum kit, and fretless bass all playing with a great singer we've found. She busted out this song, and I'd never heard it before. At the age of 50, I'm now an Indigo Girls fan...
I also became an Indigo Girls fan during this quarantine! I've been recording a different cover (by lots of different artists) every day to stay sane and sharing the videos with my friends, some of whom are also doing this project. Looking for more songs to cover is how I found them, and now I'm devouring all their music.
@@MeSRussell I've been a fan for a long time. Like their Facebook page - they have put on so many livestream concerts over the past few months. It is so good to see them performing live again.
@@scubamage I am here because I just saw that special on Netflix! I have loved the IGs for a long time, so not a new fan, but I just had to see this video again after watching that. What fun it was when they finally came onstage after all that build-up!
Wow, I don't know how I missed this song! I love the Indigo Girls and have listened to them since back in the 90s. This is a perfect song for right now. I wish more people could hear it and be moved the way I was.
Even more relevant today than when this song was written. We still have such a long way to go for equality. We all belong to the same race - the human race. The sooner everyone understands this, the better the world will be.
Most of the recreational spots within a day's drive from here that i recall visiting as child with my folks, now bare evidence of the Mexican population increase, and i say.. GOOD FOR THEM! It's quite refreshing to see the induction and growth of a culture that still places value on family and togetherness. So far, all i've seen is a vibrant and colorful people to which i feel blessed to have been exposed. I for one truly believe "We're better off for all that we let in."
waltark Just look at us in 2018!!! I am grateful to have this wonderful song to share with my daughters at a time when the language of hate is so loud and prevalent.
Was a fan the min my friend and I (who harmonize to anything we hear) heard Closer to Find. 4 concerts in and the girls on their 3rd album, we saw them at The Palace in Albany, THE PERFECT VENUE FOR them. incredible! such an intimate feeling. Standing on chairs, singing. Was best concert I've ever attended in my 51 yrs. IG, thank you for all the joy you've brought to my life. xoxo
I absolutely love the Indigo girls...and I live in Gainesville. Makes me sad that people are so intolerant, but I can't disagree with their assessment. Times are changing though. :)
They're from Georgia ? This was 96? If they played this in California this song would have blown sky high. Even bigger then it did. Just found this song and thought it was about Cali. We all about that Chicano life in the golden state.
Shame on You Indigo Girls Album: Shaming of the Sun My friends they wash the windows And they shine in the sun They tell me wake up early in the morning sometime See what a beautiful job we've done I say let's put on some tunes Sing a long and dolittle all day Go down to the riverside take off our shoes And wash these sins away And the river said La la la it said shame on you And the river said La la la it said shame on you I go down to Chicano City park Cause it makes me feel so fine And when the weeds go down you can see up close In the dead of the winter time But when the summer comes everything's in bloom And you wouldn't know it's there And the white folks like to pretend it's not But their music's in the air And you can hear 'em singing La la la they said shame on you You can feel em dancing La la la they said shame on you My friend Tanner she says you know Me and Jesus we're of the same heart The only thing that keeps us distant Is that I keep fuckin' up I said come on down to Chicano City park And wash your blues away The beautiful ladies walk right by You know i never know what to say And they'll be singing Ooo la la la la la la la la shame on you And they'll be dancing Ooo la la la they said shame on you Shame on you Let's go road block trippin in the middle of the night Up in Gainesville town There'll be blue lights flashin down the long dirt road When they ask me to step out They say we've been looking for illegal immigrants Can we check your car? @mithrildude Ever experienced the process? I have. Anyone else who has would be able to tell you what a ridiculous proposition that is for most middle-to-lower class Mexicans who just want to feed their families.
Here's a funny story. Well, not funny ... I gave up the Indigo Girls because my wife said they were lesbians, and she didn't want me to attracted to lesbians. It made sense at the time. I wanted to get laid. WWIT ( I just made that one up ) What was I thinking? You know. The tragic part is I really am attracted to girls. So girls who like girls? That's off the chart!
Ignorance. "Mexicans" aren't a race, no more than "Canadians" are a race. You'll find that most people who dislike them do so with very little regard to whatever race they happen to be. If they hear speakin' Spanish, it riles up thar' dander! For the record, I have no fear of people from Mexico and actually like that culture a great deal. Both sides of the issue, though, are dogma-chanting, mindless partisans.
Bigotry against immigrants, and profiling people who appear "different" in some way, have only increased since this song was released. In Butler County, OH, where Sheriff Rick Jones presides, this animosity runs particularly rampant. I have been asked by police if I can speak English, when they had no reason to speak to me otherwise. BTW, I am of Italian descent! Just because a person has dark hair and a tan, doesn't mean they are undocumented. Sheriff Jones needs to stop wasting time pandering to bigots, and work on relevant things, like the opioid epidemic!
I'm sorry you're having to go through this. I'm a white woman in WarrenCountyOhio, and it's tRumpkin County here, too. They hate ME for my shaved head, n my refusal to bow down to the GoodOlBoys' club. Shame On Them, Sister. Not on us.-GraceWade.
People will argue, but I will say it anyway: this is their best song.
I never say this sort of thing cos depends on mood...time of day etc...but defo in my top 5, also ghost, leaving, closer to fine... You name it...
I gotta go with Power of Two. That one hits me so hard.@@cjstato
Agree about Shame On You. Amazing song.
I agree!! I never get tired of listening to it and I've been hearing it since it came out.
One of their most fun for sure!

The words are good describe for when people have these feelings
Shame on You
Indigo Girls
Album: Shaming of the Sun
My friends they wash the windows
And they shine in the sun
They tell me wake up early in the morning sometime
See what a beautiful job we've done
I say let's put on some tunes
Sing a long and dolittle all day
Go down to the riverside take off our shoes
And wash these sins away
And the river said
La la la it said shame on you
And the river said
La la la it said shame on you
I go down to Chicano City park
Cause it makes me feel so fine
And when the weeds go down you can see up close
In the dead of the winter time
But when the summer comes everything's in bloom
And you wouldn't know it's there
And the white folks like to pretend it's not
But their music's in the air
And you can hear 'em singing
La la la they said shame on you
You can feel em dancing
La la la they said shame on you
My friend Tanner she says you know
Me and Jesus we're of the same heart
The only thing that keeps us distant
Is that I keep fuckin' up
I said come on down to Chicano City park
And wash your blues away
The beautiful ladies walk right by
You know i never know what to say
And they'll be singing
Ooo la la la la la la la la shame on you
And they'll be dancing
Ooo la la la they said shame on you
Shame on you
Let's go road block trippin in the middle of the night
Up in Gainesville town
There'll be blue lights flashin down the long dirt road
When they ask me to step out
They say we've been looking for illegal immigrants
Can we check your car?
I say you know it's funny
I think we were on the same boat back in 1694
BRILLIANT AND CATCHY SONG :)
