- Exactly 24 years ago, grunge icon Kurt Cobain died. A few years before his death, Studio Brussel got the chance to interview Cobain in 'De Vooruit', in Ghent on november 23rd, 1991. He was there with his band Nirvana after they just released their second album 'Nevermind'. For more than 25 years the interview got lost in the huge archives of the Belgian public television and radio. Until today!
Exact 24 jaar geleden stierf Kurt Cobain. Enkele jaren voordien kon Studio Brussel hem spreken voor het concert van Nirvana in de Vooruit. Al die tijd zat het radiointerview verborgen in het VRT-archief. Tot vandaag.

Kurt’s voice was like so soothing. In an angry, mad way.
He may have been an angry troubled kid, but his voice isn't.
his voice is like honey over gravel. heard that somewhere and it's always stuck with me, its so beautiful
Yes 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
Like turkey tom
“All the other drummers pretty much sucked” ouch Chad😖
I know :( He might have been excluding him though. And he later said Dave sucked too so his standard was pretty high!
Kurt changed his mind a lot on a ton of subjects. He constantly either said he loved his drummers or hated them. When Dan Peters and Dave Grohl were the lasts contenders to be the new drummer they picked Dave but then a few years later Kurt complained that about how Dave should play more like Dan! A lot of people don’t know this but Kurt was kind of an asshole no respect though. He constantly just complained about performances even if they were just fine, always threatening to fire people except for Krist
He could of loosely used the word suck too. Maybe they didn't suck at the skill so to speak but maybe with the commitment they showed on being apart of nirvana. Like Kurt said right after, when Dave joined and stayed a member for a solid year he finally felt like a unit
@@smarkmalark I heard from a homie of mine that Kurt took being in a band very very seriously. I think he read Kurt's journals and mentioned a part where he had wrote something along the lines of if a band can't consistently practice every week then they might as well pack it up.
Ha I was thinking the same thing!
It's strange how when you die young everything is re-evaluated and filtered through the lens of death. This interview is presented as "He died, now here's an interview we chanced into a few years before his death". In reality, almost everyone (myself included) had known about Nirvana for a few weeks when this interview was taped - it's more significant for being taped right in the middle of Nevermind going stratospheric rather than being related to his death in any way.
Same goes for Artemisia Gentileschi, a baroque period painter. She was raped at 17 and her entire body of work gets viewed through that lens even when some artworks were made decades later.
I could listen to this all night long just because of his calm and soothing voice
“Dave and Krist never thought of themselves as songwriters ,”
Kurt dies
Dave hits it big with the foo fighters
Foo Fighters hit big because of drummer of *N* *I* *R* *V* *A* *N* *A*
terrible band btw
@B G dave even said he got pretty intimidated by kurt and had written some songs but just let kurt's view go. cobain probably didn't like when someone was interuppting his vision and thats understandable. foo fighters first album is a compilation of daves songs lol
@@QDRox all those songs were made by grohl himself he played every instrument
he even played the demo for Kurt and Kurt himself was aware and liked it.
This was one year of Dave being in the band guarantee kurt knew his writing and music skills over the time
Kurt Cobain forever! First musician who I really felt connected to when listening to music. RIP
Matias Verbeuren same!!
It's lovely to get a real insight into their relationship as friends and as band mates x x
Melissa Wright About a girl
Je suis québécois.
I like Chad's drumming. It doesn't suck.
André Bernardo I think what he meant by suck, was all the other drummers just didn't click. I've played with several drummers that were great drummers, they just had a hard time picking up what we were putting down. Some work well with what you're playing and some don't. I agree with you though, Chad's a damn fine drummer.
+Gabriel Lemming I don't know what he meant, I just hear what he said. Yes, Chad's damn fine. Have you watched a concert they gave in France, in 12/01/89? It's here, on YT, and remastered. They were so good.
André Bernardo I haven't seen it, but I'll have to check it out. Thanks for letting me know about it, I do appreciate it!
+Gabriel Lemming You're welcome. You'll love it. Enjoy! :)
compared to Dave Grohl, most drummers sound like they "suck", but Chad's style was cool. He nailed those songs on tour.
Thanks for the interview and the lovely animation
Chad was great on the drums...but dave is a BEAST too...but chad on bloom was awsome
i think he had great timing
Yea
Dave hits harder and has near perfect timing.Thst is what I think Kurt meant. But Chad had his own sloppy, cool and unique style. He was very inventive and did alot with what little he knew.
Only the absolute truth with Kurt. This type of pure spirit was the real draw. When confronted with grief I could only listen to Nirvana. It got me through the worst first 12 days of a bereavement leave. After that I had to go back to work and pretend everything was fine. It was tough when friends asked why I wasn't my bubbling giggly self. I just smiled and acted like it didn't bother me.Ten years of agony and lots of therapy finally healed me.Thank you Nirvana, cause I do not think I could have made it through one day without the music.
man, i miss this guy :( thank you so much for this!
aw. were you close?
@@nomenome856 who cares of they weren't close? We miss him and we dont care what anyone says
This made my day! Thank u for releasing this
Bedankt Studio Brussel, mooie opgezet Love you guys
1:16 the thing is Kurt can’t read sheet music
H1 TH3R3 nor does he write with his left hand.
I thought if he played his guitar the other way he wrote with his left hand
H1 TH3R3 nah nah. You can Google pics of him writing in his journal, signing autographs. He's always using his right hand.
Jaber Enizi aww man. I thought he was another lefty like me. I guess thanks for telling me
I think he's ambidextrous
wow thank you so much for uploading this! I love the animation, especially all the band posters that kurt loved!!
juuhuuuuu thhaannk you guys so much for uploading this !! great 4minutes.. 😊☺☺
The audio quality is so shocking amazing😮😮😮
I'm very blessed! Thank you for tharing this! :-)
Listen to Kurt interviews to clear my mind
Thanks for sharing! Lovely animation!!!
Thank you for this
Thanks for sharing this long-lost interview - we are still to this day influenced by Nirvana in our current attitude towards music- as different as it may sound.
Xentrifuge yeah but sadly shifty sexist rappers think they’re like him because of it
Missing you so much,Kurt.
Love his voice so much, miss you Every day Kurt ❤️
Nice interview, good animation too. It's moving to listen to this and think of that time, it really was great.
this is sick man! good work on the animation
The quality is amazing.
Thank you, I've never heard this before 💞
1:08 OOPS. Kurt wrote with his right hand 😱 Otherwise fascinating to hear, the quality is so clear, it's almost as if it was recorded yesterday. we miss u KURT
Uhhhh, no? That's his left!
@@aamshaegar8557 yeah, Kurt played left handed guitar so people assume he was left handed, but actually he wrote with his right hand.
At 0:58, if Kurt could see Dave now!
Julius Mol I was just thinking the same thing!!
This is so cute.... R.I.P Kurt
Interesting. Thank you 🙏
I love his talking voice.
I'm from Belgium! I really like this 😢. Never known Nirvana... I'm too youngh for that but... seeing this makes me happy
Back when they were a "tight unit"....good friends....unaware of the revolution underway back in the US. Way cool that sentiment got captured by Kurt's own voice. Thank you for posting this!
Ahhh the voice ♡
i loved it..keep going on nirvana....
I miss him
3:28 just makin salad
yo this was beautiful. beautiful fucking animation. thanks!
So much hard work put into the visual representation here...I wish they had just taken the time to reference some acoustic guitars so the sound holes would be in the right spot.
just hearing him talk makes me feel at ease
Animation, and Kurt = YES
i love this animation style
Just, wow!
One mistake: Kurt was lefthanded for playing guitar...but was righthanded to write.
Virginie Leroux really?
Homerslot yes.
Homerslot you can see it on a teenage photo and on one photo from Gilbert Blecken's photoshoot ( while Kurt was writing)
Yes, Kurt was right-handed
Virginie Leroux he taught himself to play left-handed on guitar
Would anybody happen to know if there is an actual footage of the interview without this animation? Or did it only have it on audio?
Also Chads style complimented the Bleach album very well.He was more an accompanist style of drummer like Bill Ward. Where Dave was more of a time keeper, like Bonham. I liked them both, for what they do is different.
this is fucking awesome xD want to see more interview with Kurdt as animation
Do it
Do it now
wow ik wist nooit dat studio brussel kurt ooit had geïnterviewd !! i miss him :(
Huh? Is... is that Dutch?
@@jess5427 hahaha yes
I’ve got a Daria “Trent” vibe
Nice gedaan :)
DALE CROVER. Kurt fucking knew he didn't suck. From the start he was always trying to get him on permanently. Melvins were Dale's thing. Melvins and fucking Nirvana both are just incredible.
I agree
Kurt loved Dale and Dan Peters
i don`t miss kurt cobain i can see him on the internet all the time if i wanted to however i do wish he had more time on earth to make new things he was very talented
Legend.
the breeders poster at 1:50 makes me so happy
November 23rd ,1991
I feel like Kurt would've enjoyed my tunes. World Class dude. Thanks for sharing!
I'm counting on you Jesus is a great song, I think he would've covered it even
@@nuao88 I appreciate that! Thanks for listening!
Kurt actually writes, and doing anything except playing guitar, with his right hand
Oh man..:(
Make a nice salad! Miss u kurt! RIP
Freddie Mercury announced he had aids on the day of this interview and died the next day.
Mark W 😰😥
Oh yeah you’re right... he died on November 24th, 1991, right?
He definitely sounds like a young man now than I'm older I feel the difference 😅I will love Kurt until the end ❤❤❤❤
Sometimes i wanna hear his voice
Kurt:
GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC
Knap!
Dave kicks ass
Krist novaselic looks like that guy from the foo fighters in this video 0:24
Dave Grohl???
R.I.P kurt
"we're musicians we like music" idk why that made me lol twice
A lot of “musicians” are in it for the wrong reasons. Money, fame etc, and they could give a fuck less about music. I think that’s what he meant by that.
Interview Kurt Cobain 1991.
Wow hij was dus in België
He sounds sick
I didn't realize how nice he was
...he was a sweet guy, he never belonged in this world...he was lent to us, so we could have experienced something so good w just some few years of,his existance...how could someone be so beautiful to last a lifetime? Then he would not be beautiful anymore...Kurt shall forever be remembered in his prime...handsomely beautiful, charming, full of talents, enigmatic...an IDOL... a LEGEND.
He was nice but an asshole at the same time
Wish Kurt coulda been my homie 🐝 ☀️
C est ce que je lis présentement plusieurs drummer dans avant nirvana
1:16 song notes check
Kurt was right-handed.
“Shot” by The Jesus Lizard came out after Kurt’s Death, but other than that, this was pretty damn dead on. Sorry, not to be pedantic lol thought the addition of The Jesus Lizard was very cool. If it had been Scratch Acid’s First LP, it would have been epic hahaha
1:00 hehehe Dave "Not. a song writer"
Isaiah. - yeah, I chuckled, too. Dave later said that he was putting ideas together in his head, but never came forward to express his songwriting until later. So, Kurt wasn't aware because Dave kept it to himself.
Isaiah. Lol he wasn’t. Remember this is like 1990. So at the time he wasn’t the songwriter as we know him today
@@jarrettthomas4865 Well Actually Dave recorded Pocket Watch late 1990 under the name Late!, but i get what you mean hahahaha
Isaiah. Hahaha yea, well I wrote a song in the fifth grade called toaster strudel :) I’m a songwriter too :)
3:17
😎
This is not "newly emerged" footage. It's been on tape for a while.
but they just found it
blondedcocaine But it was already released, meaning they found it well before now. They're bullshitting to try and get attention
ASMR
Kurt’s voice was a Washington Stoners.
they made him look like a combo of a targaryen meets children of the forest
Does anyone know when he first tried heroin?
Anti Religius Anarchy A.R.A about 1989 I think. Definitely started self-medicating in the late 80s
Anti Religius Anarchy A.R.A
There's an entry in a Journal - it appears in Montage of Heck.
H was either 88 or 89.
I forget.
Idk why but the way Kurt said "divide em up... Make a nice salad" made me laugh my ass off
Kurt cobain would be 5 years younger than my grandma
Beuty and violence
Where the f*ck went the Tabs ?
Dan Peters was and is a good drummer...
He wasn't really a Nirvana drummer though, he only played very briefly. Kurt preferred him to Dave eventually.
Dave never felt himself a songwriter? Lol he never let it be known lol
Not just my opinion?!? Kurt himself called Dave, a baby. Dale Crover. LOL.......
Kurt would have divided the violence of his actions, aka suicide... with a new song/ high, he would displace the anger, mix it up...not shoot himself.
I love you so much it makes me sick.
Chad was/is awesome. I like Chad. But ok whatever.
He sounds like a depressed teen
