I think ae matte have the best for splitting or crop.. to avoid any missed alignment from the previous frame.

How would I apply blur to the sides?

idk if ur still looking for this, but u can apply gaussian blur to the clips that u want to be blurred, i suggest putting the blurriness to around 40 but it depends on what u want
