  • How to surf | Take off & pop up perfectly every single time with this video from H2R Sydney HQ.
    In this video Kale talks through some super important points behind the sometimes intimidating 'take off' in surfing. That 'pop up' that so many beginner surfers struggle with in their early stages of surfing.
    Importantly, in this video Kale offers a 'transitional' technique for beginner surfers to gain confidence with before stepping up to the advanced version.
    What are you struggling with whilst surfing? Let us know in the comments below and we'll make a video about it!

    You really know how to pop up as a pro, but as a beginner I can tell you it is better to position your back foot first and then the forward one.

    Great vids, i was thinking a vid on footwork would be great, covering all aspects of it from tube riding and simple carving but to show how it changes as conditions change and different types of waves. If its already been done i havent been able to find any. Thanks

    At 3:34 this is a perfect smooth and powerfull take off I am looking for but it is not a jumped take off like at 1:15 neither a beginner one like at 1:30 because you would have the back foot in the water on the shortboard. I think there is a first move of the back leg that is not explained, like a first quick step on knees that put the knee of the back leg forward and the back foot on the pad, then you move the front leg like the beginner take off. I am not sure to be right but it is so fast and difficult to see in the white water

    This is more of a how to pop up video. The takeoff is more about positioning and wave reading. When the wave is too flat, when its too late, when to go left or right..what a closeout looks like...paddling to the peak...arching your back on a shortboard to make late takeoffs and make steeper waves.

    Are your feet or toes on the board when you pop in the advanced version for a short board? Or are you popping with hands and knees only (feet/toes dangling off the back of the board)? The side view in the video cuts off the feet. Great videos!!!

    All good stuff, but it would help a great deal to see some examples of popping up without using your toes (i.e., as you would on a shorter board). It's hard to tell whether you're using your toes in this video.

    But are you pressing down on the rails or on the sides when you’re popping up from the board?

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 6 lety

      Side of the board generally. The fingers may curl over the side a little

    • @cwr8618
      @cwr8618 Před 6 lety

      probably not the best habit. when your fingers curl around the board they catch in the water and slow you down

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 6 lety +2

      Not really because the board should be planing enough to not be sinking that much. The top half of the board should easily be riding high.

  • @Otokage007
    @Otokage007 Před 5 lety +1

    ty for the video. I wonder if you raise your chest mostly using your arms, or mostly by arching your lower back, or mix of both. Because I feel that if I use too much arms then I'm going to sink the front of the board into the water...

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  Před 5 lety +1

      Mixture of both but board should be moving fast enough to not sink

    Thank you for making this video! I have two questions: 1. A lot of times, right before I pop up, my board gets flushed away and leaves me behind boardless 😂 do you have any suggestions to prevent this from happening? 2. After I pop up on a short board, I’d surf for 2 - 3 seconds on the wave, but then I’d notice that I’m getting slower and slower and eventually end up having to jump off. I try to get my center of mass forwards. Sometimes I don’t even have my back foot on the stomp pad. Do you have any suggestions for not losing the wave after popping up (btw I take off on green waves and ride the white water to shore, my board is about 35L and the waves are about 1 meter tall)?

    • @teresagarcia3670
      @teresagarcia3670 Před 2 lety

      I think I am a little late but I can help you hahahhaha. I have the answer for the second thing you mentioned, when you are riding the white water with a shortboard is normal to lose speed, so what you have to do is ride the "wall" of the wave in its highest part. Im sorry if I wrote smth bad but I am not english so hahahha

    Better to walk up. Back foot lands then on front. Always lean forward and stack on front foot. I'm not going lie not many pro surfer pop up. They walk up. Back foot always first and be like a sprinter then pull front foot forward

    If you teach beginners to take off using their knee you'll create a terrible habit that they'll struggle to correct in the future. So better teach the 3 steps take off or chicken wing technique.
    When you take off jumping on a short board you can't use your toes in the water, you push from your knees.
