The video with my driving impressions of towing this trailer with my truck including a timed 0-60 run will be out soon on Hitched to Horsepower!!
Hey i have a 2019 450 king ranch for sale.
One of your best reviews.
Nice Ford!
Love my RAM dually, but seeing this F-450 in action is impressive. 👍
Yup I’m hoping RAM will put the trucks on a diet so we can get a 4500 👍🏾
Grinning ear to ear taking off in that f450, love it!
😁
I love it too!!
The PowerStroke and 10 speed TorqShift transmission is a beast. Even with that load it pulls up hill with ease. If he would’ve kept his foot down it would easily accelerate pass 80. Effortless power down low and at high speeds. Amazing engineering.
Yup I had to let off because of traffic
Duallies are definitely awesome.
There towards the end you all talked about exactly what I say and tell people about towing with 1/2 ton trucks. It’s not so much the weight (to a point) that matters as it is the type of trailer you’re towing. Big enclosed trailers will push a half ton around loaded or not. In fact other than pure acceleration or pulling a grade they pull the same loaded or empty. And these manufacturers are a little reckless I believe in advertising these huge numbers (13,000 plus pounds in some cases) for half tons.
On open trailers, 9,000 or even 10,000 pounds is probably OK but you got plenty of videos showing what that does to most half tons in an enclosed trailer at that weight and on some cases your 9000 or 9500 pound trailer is only about 70% of their rated capacity!
Good video.
Really good info! Sometimes I think the manufactures are vague on purpose because like I always say, “they make bigger trucks for a reason”. When you told me to pull with a 1/2 empty, it was clear that big enclosed trailer are better suited for HD’s. Thanks brother 🙏🏽
No problem man. I really enjoy your videos.
These videos with you and Robert are pretty cool too. Nice addition to your content.
Great detail! Nicely done.
Thanks Clint!
Thank you for all the comments about safety! I'm looking at towing a tiny home (gooseneck) and it's right at the top end of the Ram 2500 capacity. Everyone is telling me a 2500 "should be" fine. Um no. I don't want to be towing through the Rockies telling myself 'it should be fine!' I'll buy a one ton and never lose a night's sleep over the extra money. 👍🏻
💯
This one as a ton-and-a-quarter is even better!
JB; if you go cab & chassis watch your GCW. Cab & chassis's are rated for more carrying weight but the combined truck & trailer may be lower the the Super Duty pickup. The Cab- Chassis mounts are heavier weight truck when you add the after market bed reducing the amount you can tow.
Very true, but I would go aluminum bed if I went that route!
The only difference between the F350 DRW and F450 is the front frame section, axle(width), and the calipers and rotors. The rear spring pack is identical because the two trucks are very similar. The F450 has the mechanical advantage(4.30 vs 4.10) and more braking capacity(slightly larger, thicker rotors) so it has an GCWR advantage of 1800lbs(F350 w/4.10 is 43500lbs vs F450 45300lbs). The F450 has a payload disadvantage because the larger front frame section and wider axle makes the truck heavier, and both are limited to 14000lbs GVWR. Funny how that Dana M300 is the same axle on the F550 has a RGSWR 14709lbs.
I looked at the Ford and Ram for 2021. Rented both and pulled my trailer with them. Ford was nice, and clearly pulls like a champ. What was the deal killer was the CP4 and the Ram exhaust brake. I went with the 2021 RAM for the CP3 and the interior is just best in class between the three. The Ram is not a hole shot winner, but just a towing beast with the HO and Aisin. All three truck manufacturers are making great HD diesel options. The CP3 over teh CP4 was my final deciding factor along with access to the engine. Ford and GM just make is so hard to work on the truck without lifting the can.
I did this also. Ford was a beast but the Ram won me over when hauling. The CP3 was a HUGE deciding factor for me.
The CP4.2 is a piece of junk, no idea why Ford sticks with it 🤔.
@chris Salsberry 😊thanks for sharing 👍🏾
@David Brown thanks for sharing bro 👍🏾
I consider the CP4 issue when buying this and after talking to a few diesel mechanics I just don't think it's a big deal. The major problems were in 17 and 18. Also I only use high quality fuel, change my fuel filters often, and run some diesel additive every 3 to5 fill ups. When getting to the end of my warranty I will install a disaster prevention kit to be on the safe side. It's just not a deal breaker for me. 🤷♂️ Hopefully I'm not wrong haha
Great video JB. The Ford 10 speed is way more refined with the PowerStroke than the GM IMO. THAT 450 is a beast for sure. The one big thing that I hate about a Ford is the damn truck dings for everything. You do anything in that truck and it dings at you. Keep up the good work.
Lol, now that you mention it does have a warning or a chime for a lot of its features but otherwise a great truck! Thanks David 👍🏾
Yes the dings get annoying! I might have to start pulling some fuses haha
@@hitchedtohorsepower my buddies Ford does the same thing. He said there is a way to program the truck thru a ForScan tool of some kind. I don't know much about it but that would drive me crazy. That's a beautiful truck you have. You guys do some really good videos.
That would be the least of my worries ding ding ding
I have an 2017 F450 and even with the 6 speed transmission its a beast. The key to towing even the smaller trailers is the wheel base of the towing vehicle. I recommend at a minimum 3/4 ton with a V8.
Full timer and loving it.
Towing a gooseneck behind a f-150 is night and day difference between towing a bumper pull. I am not surprised that f150 did not tow your enclosed trailer as well. I really only use my f150 if I need to tow my gooseneck. I can not afford a new truck but I have never felt unsafe in it. I can tell what is going to be to much for it or not. Just need to make sure the trailer has decent brakes. Hoping to get a f250 with the new 7.3 godzilla one of these days. Diesels are ridiculously overpriced and repairs are expensive.
The powerstroke is a beast. Now if they could build an anti-rust platform around it? That would be great. Down with Ford.
Thank you for a wonderful review.
F450 with drw
Is the truck....
You made a great point discussing learning to drive with a trailer.
Been towing over 40 years, and can tell you 1st hand towing over or at weight limit SUCKS.
I wonder if anyone has a simulator for trucks and trailers??
Again thank you
Glad you are taking about responsible towing. Manufactures give people a false sense of ability. Just because you can doesn’t mean it is safe.
💯
I've been spoiled by doing most of my towing with a dually since I was 16 but last fall I did some long distance towing of my 22 foot enclosed car trailer with a friend's 2018 Sierra 2500 Duramax and yes it was fine but the stability and convenience for all day and especially several days in a row just isn't there. Thanks for watching!!
Boy, if you were full timing that would be a very strong contender. Impressive rig
Yup, I think a dually is the way to go if you are traveling cross country especially in the middle of summer!
I'm deciding between the f450 or ram 3500 HO. My concern is reliability of motor after warranty. Ram replaced the injector pump to the more reliable cp3 for 2021. But your stuck with 17 on the ram vs 19.5 on the Ford. I'll be towing a grand design momentum 395ms. 20k wet. I would want to replace the 17" wheels to 19.5 so that's a added cost. But ram has the air bags on the rear axles. Is the Cummings better than the power stroker? Aisin 6 speed vs 10 speed torque shift. Anyone got any input on these two trucks?
Yeah that’s a nice truck for sure! Another positive is he can upgrade his trailers without worrying about capacity.
Very very good point, in some cases Toy hauler fifth wheels almost always require a dually over 15000# 👍🏾
Exactly right now I mostly pull a 22 foot enclosed trailer which just isn't that heavy but I used to tow a 48 foot enclosed 2 car gooseneck with triple 7k axles. This truck will give me everything I need if I decide to get another trailer like that. I will say that if you're towing any sort of 20+ foot enclosed or RV trailer and are going to spend over 8 hours or so driving in a day on a regular basis I highly recommend a dually for the stability.
Go with the F-450. I have one and love it. The differences are the wide-track front axle, 19.5" Alcoa rims with commercial tires, bigger rear axle, bigger brakes, and the 4.30 rear end. The F-450 doesn't have TPMS because the Ford TPMS sensors aren't compatible with the Alcoa rims and the 4.30 is a little tall when running empty. The cost is not much different. The tires will last longer. The wide-track axle cuts to a full 45 degrees. My '18 F-450 is easier to park than my '15 F250 short bed.
I have 20 F350 Dually Diesel Lariat with 3.55 axle and get about 17 mpg for normal driving and up to about 1500 lbs payload. What do you get on your 18 F450 for mpg? Did you install after market TPMS? How many miles have you driven? Have you changed the tires out yet? Where do you go for the tire check up or air fill up? For me, I have been going to either discount tire but Ford dealers are more skillful on finding a slow leak where I had to change out the valve stem on one of the rear rim.
You might wanna correct this statement, Dennis. Ford is not using Alcoa rims. They’ve been caught using cheap Chinese knock-offs which is why there is dissimilar metal corrosion where the valve stem and rim meets. It’s actually a class action lawsuit against Ford right now.
The big difference between the F350 vs F450 is when you get the f450 with the adaptive steering. It has a much tighter and smooth turn. The F350 dually will have a larger payload capacity. Pick which you need.
Yup I mostly tow so the F-450 was an easy choice. I will say even with the 350 having a better payload the benefits of the wide track front axle are unbelievable. I know I keep talking about it but the more I drive this truck even without a trailer I'm constantly blown away buy how maneuverable it is. Even if you're never going to tow but are going to haul, especially in tight spots, I'd suggest taking the 450 for a test drive!
@@hitchedtohorsepower I currently have 2020 F350 Dually with 6.7 Diesel Lariat. I wish I would gotten Platinum or Limited. I do not tow but do like hearing about tight turning. Did you install the after market TMS? How many miles have you driven so far? What is the maintenance cost comparison to F350 to F450? Lastly, I like the wide front axil look. Perhaps I drive what I have for couple more years and trade it in for 2023 or 2024 F450 Platinum or Limited. Do you have adaptive cruise control? What else is there that Lariat doesn't have already? Thank you!
@W J I actually sold my 450 back to the dealer in July because they offered me more than I paid with about 19k miles on it. I bought a 09 Silverado 3500 out of Montana with only 46k miles on it and no rust. I plan on getting a 23 F-450 Platinum when it comes out. I looked into aftermarket TPMS and most likely would have gone with the ARB system if I had kept it. Maintenance wise the really only difference is the tires. The 19.5s are more expensive on average but tend to last longer so I expected it even out. The tight turning is amazing. As soon as I left the dealer's lot on my test drive I knew it's wanted it over any other truck. Yes it does look a lot better too!! Towing or just driving around it makes it feel so much smaller. I've driven duallies since I was 16 so I'm used to what I have to do and think ahead as far as getting around a tight parking lot or making u-turns. With the 450 it was more like driving my Grand Cherokee than a big pickup. I have a few videos on my decision to sell my truck along with what I saw as the main differences between a 350 and 450 but the main reason I decided to get rid of it was I kept having a minor problem with the DEF system. I'm sure the dealer would have fixed it but the emissions system was what worried me before buying it in the first place so when I had an issue and could get out of it and make a little I jumped at the chance. I really like my current Silverado but it doesn't compare to a F-450 overall. There was a little part of me that wanted the bigger infotainment screen of the 22 but now with the redesign coming out I think I'll wait for that. It would be amazing if someone would pair the wide track front axle with a SRW or even a short bed 250 haha. Talk about maneuverability!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Jb have you had a chance to do a towing run with a ram 3500 with the 4.10 yet? Was curious if you felt it made much difference over the 3.73 in yours
I drove a 2021 vs a 2020 dually with a 3.73 and noticed the grunt was gone in comparison with the truck with a 4.10, however it did have less power. Hopefully some used trucks come available 👍🏾
Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
I’m nearing retirement. I’m looking at the Lux brand 45’ - 48’ with GVW around 26,000. Still struggling to understand if the F-350 - f-450 meets the legal requirements. Truthfully, I wish I could get a Ram 3500 mega cab dually similar to the Ford F-450.
I go back and forth with this size trailer vs 32’-35’ for more flexibility.
The issue is, we plan on living in the home 8 months of the year and eventually we may live on it full time.
We are also considering a 45’ class A Tiffin, Newmar and American Coach or a used 8-10 year old Provost or Newell Coach.
These are difficult tradeoffs and ultimately decisions to make.
Thanks for sharing, the only issue with te 450 is it has a low payload because of the heavier front end and wheel/tire setup. To be honest I would almost recommend a cab/chassis or a Volvo Semi for a 26k GVWR trailer but that’s just to stay within truck GVWR.
Not to verse with the Class A’s but sounds like most of the rigs you listed are great brands. If you’re a home body, I would consider a larger rig so you can spread out more especially on those rainy days 👍🏾
Are you going to park it in one place?
@@SLICKW1993 no. We would want to pull it to different places every 10-15 days. Then park for winter in barn
If you want a rig that will look good sitting in the Ford service bay, get the Powerstroke....If you want a rig that will provide a reliable 300k, go with the Cummins.
@@jordangarrick703 lol…. Your may be right. My Chevys have always been far more reliable than my Fords. But… darn-it… my Fords have always pulled better.
If I were buying today, I’d probably get the 1-ton GMC Denali. I just love the looks.
Please do a video on stopping your trailer with various trucks.
The F450 is the way to go. The only down side is the front tires seem to wear faster. I've gotten this from 4 or 5 F450 truck owners. What they have found out from Ford is when towing with the weight being moved to the rear the front tire scuff more. That is why a lot the F450 truck owners have heavy Duty bumpers and guards on the from for counter weight to plant the front tires to the road better.
I've heard about the front tire wear and I had lots of weird wear on my F-350. I have a good friend that owns a tire shop and he's going to pull the tires off the wheels to rotate the tires every 10k miles or so. I'm hoping that helps even the wear out. Thanks for watching!
@@hitchedtohorsepower I sure hope that works. That would be a big savings and not having to get a heavy Duty front bumper even though it is a 1 time expense.
@@ricwestdoesitwork My tire guy seems pretty confident it will work but I also keep a close eye on the wear so if I start to notice anything I'll go ahead and get the heavy duty bumper. At $300-$350 each for those tires I sure hope they last quite a bit longer than the 16" or 17" on a standard 1-ton 🤞. I thought about putting one of those bumpers on my 06 Silverado 3500 but couldn't bring myself to spend the money but if I'm getting more miles out of my tires then I could justify it. Thanks for the info and thanks for watching 👀🙂
@@hitchedtohorsepower I'm with you on that. Take care and good luck. Have a great day and I look forward to more collaboration videos with you and JB.
Question out there, best insurance company to insured that kind of set up? F450 and 40' feet wheel. Thank you. I really appreciate.
Never too much truck, sometimes too little truck! 😎🇺🇸🛻
At what speed does the governor kick in?
I noticed my bed camera doesn’t give me that depth perception that I’d like. It’s great for lining up left to right, but not so much front to back
Yea, I did a Chevy today actually with fifth wheel similar to yours and it was too dark 👍🏾
black and white guys make for such great friends!
Put a camera on the bed side wall across from the goose neck. Then when you back up you can see both views....side to side and for n aft.
My 2022 f450 left me stranded after a steering wheel and brake failure at 50.4 miles. Ford roadside told me with a paid off brand new Ford it was an out of pocket cost.
I need some advice!!! I’m buying a new truck this summer. Ford F-250 Tremor or Ram 2500? I love both of them!
You plan on towing anything heavy?
@@JB_WhoWork A small camper or trailer with camping gear. I have a family of five and I love these two trucks (kinda like tanks) safety for the family. Thanks for the reply!
Since ur a truck guy, what would you recommend? A big live-in trailer that needs to be towed, or a big rv with its own engine
I like having the truck to tow other stuff so I'd probably go with a trailer but if I wasn't towing any else or money didn't matter I'd have either some sort of diesel pusher especially one of the bus based ones or a big rig based RV. My 2 dream RVs are a bus type motor home made by Newell or a Featherlite Totorhome. But since I already have a way too expensive tow vehicle if another RV is in my near future, used to have a motor home, it would be a fifth wheel. Thanks for watching!
I prefer a truck/fiver because the class a/b are pretty expensive and you still need a vehicle to tow behind it. Great question 👍🏾
It depends who you are travelling with. If you are travelling with one or more women, go for the class A since you won't be stopping every ten minutes for them to piss.
Outstanding video as always JB! God Bless!
Bruce.
Thanks Bruce, Blessings to your as well 👍🏾
Is that nice Ford starting to rub off on You? Are You gunna jump ship and become a Ford Guy? Hey I've test drove them both, they are both so much nicer than anything that was available 2 years ago. I just ordered a 2021 RAM and the decision for me came down to the engine braking on the RAM. Its the real deal.. I loved the Ford especially running empty. So snappy and responsive. But the RAM got Me when it came to stopping or maintaining speed on a steep long grade. Really looking forward to the trip up to Bud Clary Dodge at the end of June to pick up my dream truck. RAM 3500 HO, Limited, 6'4" bed with RAM Boxes, Granite Crystal Met,, Night Edition. Before I pick it up it its going over to HID Kit Pros to have the Carli Suspension Dominator kit 3.5 King Shocks, progressive rear leaf springs and the long travel air bags with All the bells and whistles, Fuel Mavericks 37"x20" installed with Ridge Grappers. Then we're going on a road trip, then back home.
Ha, I’m like you and really appreciate the RAM. Wow congrats and you’re gonna have to send me some pics when it’s all done up, congrats 👍🏾
If Ford could make an exhaust break half as good as Ram trucks I would consider a F450 for my next truck.
They can't, cummins is a solid cast iron block and heads. Fords and chevy are aluminum heads and they can't handle the backpressure like the cummins can. I'm a ford guy and it sucks
Thank you for another great video JB! I’m curious as to which truck you would prefer to pull a 25,000 pound DRV toy hauler. The F450 Dually or a Dodge Ram 3500 HD Dually High Output 6.7L CumminsTurbo Diesel I6 Engine with 410 air ride rear end. I like what you had to say about the engine braking aspect of the ram. I’m more concerned about stopping than I am with acceleration. What say you sir?
In that case the RAM is the way to go if you want the strongest exhaust brake. The RAM will have higher payload for something that big too and the factory air suspension gives better feedback going down the road since it adjust the bags automatically 👍🏾
@@JB_WhoWork Thank you JB. I appreciate you!😎
@James Paolilli Good points. Thank you.
Would you buy a 2021 ram 3500 mega cab dually with 410 rear axle or would you buy a 2021f-450 with 430 rear axle.
My biggest problem with the mega cab is you can't get a long bed. For me that's a complete deal breaker because I'm going to install a 100 gallon auxiliary fuel tank. I wonder how much more of a hit fuel economy takes in the Ram with the 4.10 with the 6 speed 🤔. I give up about 2 mpg over a F-350 running ths 3.73 and that's with the 10 speed which really helps on the highway. The other big advantage of the F-450 is the wide track front axle, which we filmed a turning radius test and the results are well.... stay tuned 😉
It depends on your needs. The shorter bed is an issue if you are concerned about clearance and there is no wife trac available like on the Ford.
I do like the idea of the powertrain on the Cummins but the Ford checks more boxes in comparison
Just spec out a 2022 F350 DRW, said goodbye to my Ram 2500 6.4L.
I just done the same
To much truck is never a problem!
💯
This why we loving our F350 now and our fifth wheel is heavier and we’re amazed how much power it have (remember it’s our first 350 and dually)
It's amazing how much more pleasant towing becomes with a 1 ton dually! I'm glad you are enjoying your truck 😁
Nice did you guys unveil yet?
@@JB_WhoWork for the truck and the new RV we did during our Livestream on the 15th. Will do a more in depth video later.
Need to use both hands on steering wheel never know with that death wobble will occur
😆😆😆
Wish my 7.3 E450 had this power.... 200hp doesn't do so well at 23k lbs
what rear end is the 450? 4.10 or 4.30?
It comes with 4.30
So you telling me when ford say you can pull 14000 lbs with a f150 ecoboost it means you could tow that fifthwheel? Scary!!
Lol😂
I know where that Circut City is!
😎👍
This weight ain't nothing for this F450. I pulled over 30k pounds in load weight only with a 2017 F350 dually for years and I can say that it delivered nothing but stability on the road and an amazing performance.
Trailer and truck weight a little over 22 k
Not to be a douche here, but am I the only one that noticed the tuner on the windshield? That could very well make a difference over stock vs. Tuned. Not saying it's deleted, but having a tuner change HP and torque ratings would and will make a difference.
Great point but his CTS isn’t a tuner, it’s a monitor for temps, RPM’s and a lot of other futures 👍🏾
I would tow that with my Titan Cummins and get better fuel mileage.....the Titan is so under rated as far as weight and tow capacity.
You would be over rated capacity (12,710 lbs max) of the Titan XD with a 14k lb trailer. You have to go with the lesser of what the truck is capable of and what it is rated for.
How does it ride compared to the ram SW
The 450 rides a little stiffer with the stiffer sidewalls but it’s not much different until you ride on really bad paved roads
@@JB_WhoWork Thanks a bunch for the info.
Best diesel truck out there
I agree!! I'm not a fan of one brand over another so I really judge each truck over a few months before picking this. We are spoiled right now with quality diesel trucks, if you don't count DEF and the other emissions junk, from all 3 manufacturers but for the moment I'd say Ford has it!! I really hope Ram and GM step up and put out a 4500 with a bed and full power as a regular production model 🤞. Competition just keeps making the trucks better and if they would compete in this category everyone would have to put out even better trucks!!!
Can chassis are not designed with a 5th wheel towing in mind. Do not do it. Also cab chassis have power derated.
The rated is ok since you get a higher gear ratio 👍🏾
Never to much truck no matter what camper you have
💯
Yes but why spec out what you don't need? I say thats short man complex....or small mind...
I think they went backwards with there towing. The 99 to 00 f450 do not squat as much as this one dose with this fifth wheel.
This is the cost of better riding trucks 👍🏾
I’d still rather have my Cummins. It won’t last as long as a Cummins, I’ve got over 200900 on mine and it’s still a beast at towing my fifth wheel at 17,000 plus lbs.
200k miles isn't anything to gloat about
This is form her son
F450 engineering stronger than Ram but derated for Class 3
He has an F450 and he only bumper pulls? Ya, he has truck overkill...
Lol! He will most likely have a 20k+ trailer behind that truck in the future. He used to tow a 48ft trailer in the past so it won’t surprise me if he jumps back into it 👍🏾
Yeah I haven't done much heavy towing so far but I will be before too long. Also who doesn't love overkill!!!
I’m a subscriber to the philosophy of “Too much is just enough”.
@@VegasGuy1975 I almost went with a Freightliner M2 112 Sportchassis but decided there's a limit to how much $$ I'm willing to spend to have overkill haha
@@hitchedtohorsepower Yeah, my limit is my F-250. Its got enough power and big enough brakes to tow anything I ever plan open towing :) Sweet setup that you have though. I admit that for a hot minute, I did consider a dually F-350......then I remembered that my wife and kids like doing drive throughs on road trips. :)
