    March 2024 here. Just charged up the battery and am planning to play with this bad boy today. It's been with me all over Southern Africa about 14 years ago and served me well. I have all the latest Nikon gear and computer tech, but this camera is always on my mind. I've traveled so much of the world with this heavy (compared to today's stuff) thing and have so many good memories with it, that I probably will never sell it.

      Dad bought this in 2005. And he used it till 2011. Then kept in the box and forgot about it. I recently discovered a bunch of mini dv tapes. Used another camera to play them and found out that more than half of them are hdv. Then i remembered we got another camera in the storage bunk..
      Even though is was kept very well preserved. After 14 years of no use..there is massive fungus growth on the lens. But very surprisingly both npf 970 still had a charge and even the original npf 570. The original charger was outputting 9.5v , fortunately i checked that before plugging it in.& I had another perfectly working 8.4v powersupply off another Sony camera that had different connector at the end so i spliced the one from the bad powersupply to the good one.
      Everything ran fine..at first the tape was not ejecting. After trying like 50 times closing and opening the door. It ejected. Then it was not going in. After trying another 50 times and following the service manual, adding lithium grease to all the grease points mentioned in the manual. I got it to open and close properly. Then when it came to playback or record..the camera would make a clicking sound and won't spin the tape..i looked carefully through the manual. Figured out it had a belt so i thought that must have gone bad. So again following the service manual, took the camera apart which requires the top handle and side panel to be removed. Then i found gave it a quick inspection and saw a set of gear tooth missing from the supply wheel.
      Took the retaining bracket off the mechanism. And found broken pieces of gear from the supply reel assembly. Figured out the part number from service manual. And the wheel is 20$. Outof stock from sony. So i went on ebay and they are selling the supply reel assembly for over 50$.. old broken mechanisms are going for 20-30$. And working ones on aliexpress are going for 40$. So i am kinda stuck on which one to buy.
      Tomorrow i will run the camera with the missing gear and the supply reel gear should only be necessary for rewinding. So i think i can get away with one missing gear. The take up wheel is spinning fine so it shouldn't eat tapes. I hope. I can always rewind the tape on another dv camera and swap it in here to record the hdv tape..

    I love this camera! I got it early this year to join my other HDV pro cameras and it still holds up very well in 2018! Fun fact this was the exact camera model used to film the original paranormal activity movie! If it’s good enough for a feature film it’s good enough for CZcams content lol

    I like your overview of this baby. I'm going to shoot quite a few projects with it. I've already done one using the HDV standard in low light settings and it turned out pretty good. It can be a pain filming fast action motion, but if you film in a lower standard it keeps up with the recorded frame rate. But this is a beautiful cheap procam and you're really lucky to buy this baby under 1,000 dollars. I even named her Eva, after the actress Eva Mendez. When I get my second one she's going to be Carmen.

    One of the best camcorders Sony ever made! Their consumer-grade Handycams used to have many of the same manual controls, but which eventually got buried in the menu or eliminated entirely. I would just take the accessory shoe off of a cheap film camera and glue it on top of where the adapter goes. BTW, which camcorder did you use to record this?

      @DrCassette  Před 9 lety +1

    Very nice camera. I've looked on eBay to find out the price of this thing, and I was shocked that it still sells for 750 to 950€ (although that was the HDR-FX1E model). I still find it quite expensive for an at least 10 years old semi-pro equipment, considering that the tape mechanism can quit at any time. It would be nice to have something similar, but I'll have to stick with my Nikon D3100 as a video camera :) I paid 150€ for the body, and I had my 18-70mm lens from my D70, so it for that money I couldn't get anything better :)

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  Před 9 lety

      ***** I have the FX1E, that's the PAL version for (primarily) the European market. I got this for little over 600€ and it came in a huge massive Sony flightcase. When I first wanted one of these a few years ago they went for over 1500€! The tape mechanisms generally are very reliable if you treat them carefully. In fact some professionals still prefer the tape over SD card as the SD card can fail without you even noticing. You may be able to still salvage some material from a broken tape, but what do you do if there are no files to be found on the SD card?

    • @AttilaSVK
      @AttilaSVK Před 9 lety

      DrCassette That's absolutely true. This is the reason why I prefer vinyl and open reel analog tape instead of other digital media. Regarding the miniDV/HDV cassette mechanism, I had a cheap Handycam back in 2006, where the mechanism broke a month after the warranty expired and the service wanted me to charge half of the price of the camera for repair. I know that in the more professional camcorders there is a better tape mechanism, but I'd get very angry if my 600-900€ camcorder's tape mechanism would quit in five years after I bought it. (when I would be using it two hours a week maximum)
      For comparison, I have a Studer A807 reel to reel made in 1991. Everything to the last screw is original on the machine, and looks like I won't be needing to replace anything on it in the near future. The parameters of the machine are still better than the factory specification.

    • @cocusar
      @cocusar Před 9 lety +1

      DrCassette It's still possible to recover portions of files or a huge file in a non-working SD card. You only have to "dump" the whole disk (i.e. in linux that can be done with the program dd, or in windows with any data recovery software), and recover almost anything lost. Most of the time SD cards fails, its because the FAT or NTFS file table gets corrupted and the OS doesn't know where files are. However, they're still there. But, if some part of the recording is lost, for example the header of the file, you can still read the video if you know which encoder and properties were used. It might sound hard, but its totally doable. Also, recovering a broken tape also requieres some kind of knowledge to really recover data and minimize the loss.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  Před 9 lety

      Oh please, don't get me started... let's just say, I'd have more success properly recovering a broken tape than I'd have recovering lost data.

    • @cocusar
      @cocusar Před 9 lety

      No problem! I was saying that its possible to recover files on SD card failures. It's not impossible, but there might be less chances than with the tape. Dont get mad, it was my point of view! :P

  • @fgtujhxf85
    @fgtujhxf85 Před 9 lety +3

    The bad thing for these cameras are that they record interlaced video only and if there is a lot motion the video gets pretty distorted. But still it is an awesome camera!

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  Před 9 lety +3

      Борис Борисов That's why the HDV format is outdated at this point - Sony equipment will only do 1080i25, most JVC equipment will only do 720p50. But Blue Ray discs are no better. They don't officially support 1080p50 either. So if you output to Blue Ray this camcorder is as good as it can be.

    • @fgtujhxf85

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  Před 9 lety +2

      Most modern camcorders will do 1080p50 (PAL) or 1080p60 (NTSC). Much better for internet video. But of course at this point technology moves on to 4K which luckily is not interlaced anymore.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  Před 8 lety

      Deinterlacing may remove the image distortion - but in most cases it also cuts the video resolution in half! Progressive is the way to go.

    • @DrCassette
      @DrCassette  Před 10 měsíci

      Yes and no. This camcorder uses Sony's large NP-F type batteries, the high capacity versions should give decent recording time even in very cold weather. The problem is that this is still a tape-based camcorder, which are prone to condensation issues. When bringing the camcorder from the cold outdoors back into a warm building, condensation can form on the head drum. Usually this is detected by a sensor, which will lock out all tape transport operations until any moisture has evaporated. But if this fails, the tape can stick to the head drum, which would cause much damage.
