- On a sunny weekend in People’s Park in Shanghai, parents gather to arrange potential dates for their children.
By interviewing professional matchmakers and parents at what is perhaps Shanghai’s biggest dating market, this short film reveals how age, height and education provide an insight into the importance of a "good" marriage in Chinese society.
"Looking China" is a short film series made by a group of young film directors from over 20 countries. They traveled to various places across China, making films and exploring Chinese culture with the help of students from local universities.

no matter what is the difference between India and China, but one of the things that we share match maker, it is worked for us for millions years.
Parents are the same everywhere no one wants a daughter to marry poor or someone with no accomplishments or ambition. They sound like every lecture I ever received about how to marry a good provider!
My parents never gave me that kind of speech. They always talked to me about looking for someone who respects me and treats me well. A good person.
That is how the speech begins with lots of example of all your flaws, how you as a person to need to be true and faithful, by the end of it your nervous wanting to leave home and get a job and never never have to hear it again.
To be fair I was considered to smart and out spoken as a daughter so maybe they were trying to soften me up as I also got the impression my parents thought I would grab my husbands pant wear them, and run him ragged.
I would always end up screaming red faced " I have my own clothes why would I want my husbands clothing !"
I am still not sure how they meant it.
You can be your own provider, you dont need a husband for that.

In India it is newspaper ad or matrimonial sites. You directly call parents,speak about things, enquire, visit their house and meet girl. No dating allowed. Parents negotiate about the dowry. The woman parents should give dowry on the day of marriage. It is mostly gold,cash,bike.

Despite money and house important for Chinese community,we broke all those nonsense, and driving happy family as a mixed couple looking forward government’s policy relaxing for 3 rd or multiple kids ! it's time for my annual rant i always come to videos like this to rant about how hard it is to date even for men in the usa
im 29 now and have desided if i can't find a willing partner who loves me for me i will simply give up block off all my secondary social media and be done with it
any time i see or talk to my parents they expect i already have a family mostly because of where we live with most men simply getting a woman pregnant without marrying them
way back on the first and last time i ever actually dated someone my mom assumed i had already gotten a girl pregnant when i was barely 17 again simply because of were we live
i'd hate to inform my mom but that's not how it works at least not for men of below average looks like myself
the reality is women really only care about how much money you have where you live and what car you drive while i do live on my own and can muddle my way past money needs i still don't have a job
it's a lot harder for someone like me to get a job here because of minorities and over educated older people crowding the market for jobs they never wanted or needed before and wile members of the government will lie and say that the economy and job rates are improving ... they are all still lies
that and the world focus in superficial things like appearance and wealth simply means that now im too old and too ugly to find a wife and will likely simply die alone one day
as you can guess this is not from lack of trying in any case iv done every job available in the local economy and am loth to take any type of social service help despite growing pressure from friends and pears
on the dating side of things i have done everything from fringe personalities online to dating by recommendations from friends and family
women in the usa seem to follow one of 3 paths in life i hate men or men are there for me to use or i dont need men
the first path seems should i say most likely to happen trapped in relationship that hurt them in some way shape or form they now hate the fact that they were born women and hate men as oppressors and believe that all men are violent and evil and willing to hurt them for any reason
there is no way to talk these women out of there mind set as even a man who has never committed a crime is just waiting for the chanced to do so men hurt women by their very nature and the only way to fix this problem is to kill all men yes as you can tell radical feminism has left its scars but this goes beyond the approach even most of them would say is real or sane with many of them suffering some form of abuse or trauma that they cant or wont let go of even if the bother to try at all
the second path is born out of greed and seen as a practical thing men only exist to answer every whim of women this means paying for anything and everything expensive regardless of the quality of the product or if the product is even something useful or needed men must work at a range of jobs and positions within companies earn X or Y amount of money a year or month some extreme cases dictating that they should have a set amount of money to spend per day regardless of if the man or woman ever even see each other during the day or even at all
these women consider relationships a form of business deal the ultimate goal of which is to get as much as you can for as little as possible you may instantly compare them to trophy wives but to an even more extreme version as trophy wives will eventually form some type of emotional bond with men and might even have children if there standards can be met meanwhile the type of women i refuse to here will never bother to do such humane things as everyone is replaceable and they can always find men that are willing to pay a higher price then the last
the third path is by far the most friendly and open but consider marriage and relationships as stifling they could never marry a man because they love being free too much and consider a relationship a sign of weakness that makes them less of a person and people who hang around them too often are pareisates trying to feed of of them in one way or the other
if you've met a woman and one day she simply stopped talking to you with no cause or provocation that is the calm version of this type she is her own being and should not have to tier herself down to a man she is happy independent and would prefer to stay that way even tho many of them claim they are lonely or at least want a friend they are unable to keep this obligation except in the most light and casual of circumstances as trying to communicate with them too often in anyway is too much of a hassle for them to deal with
frankly this is why i don't think i will ever find a woman who will marry me im too ugly too poor and too clingy and that is simply not ok in today's world
