How to Install a Dehumidifier Pump | This Old House
/ thisoldhouse
I enjoyed how the homeowner got really shocked that the pump worked at the end.
lol, love how they were like 'let's follow the pipe' - but the cameraman already knew where to go
I got sick of failing condensation pumps on the A/C furnace... they are small and constantly running in our basement (High humidity in Nashville). I took a 5 gallon bucket and put a sump pump in it then ran 1" line to the outside of the house. It runs once every few hours and is VERY durable. I clipped an alarm near the top of the bucket to alert me of failure. Six years now... no problems.
Porsche924Tim that's an interesting concept, no smell or issues with water sitting in a bucket though? I've only had the condensation pump fail once in the entire decade we had a new HVAC system
Nice. Another common method is to run the drain line to the well of an existing basement sump pump.
When I had my old furnace replaced in 2007, it was from the 80s and the condensate pump was original to it. So that pump was for sure 20 years old. The condensate pump on my newer 2007 furnace has never had an issue. Maybe some brands are better than others but they seem to be engineered to run constantly, for at least 20 years with zero problems.
The nice part about the submersible pump he shows is that it will not effect the shut off on the dehumidifier if it fails
. If one of the external pumps fail the humidifier will continue to pump and dump water all over your floor.
Appreciate the video.. let me know mini pumps exist to fit inside the dehumidifer. I like the idea other people had of raising the DH and letting gravity drain it into the AC condensate pump. If you add a separate pump like you did with a Tee, I would think you should also add one-way flow valve in each tee, so you're not pumping a percentage of the water from one condensate bucket into the other (instead of outside where you want it).
I love how excited she sounds 🙂
What happens when you go to replace the water basin into the dehumidifier, now with a hose sticking out? Wish this was part of the video. On a lot of units, if the bin is not fully in place, the unit will not kick on.
Cut a little divot in bin for hose to to exit. Really not that hard....
' @tuckerjamison7442 No, not 'difficult', just looks like you forgot to do it. ;)
Sorry if someone has already asked this because I can't see the other comments, but why not raise the dehumidifier and drain using the dehumidifier's hose port into the existing condensate pump?
you are very clever!
You don't really want to over tax the a/c condensate pump, also you'd basically need to just have it drain into the condensate drain pan of the HVAC unit
@@851995STARGATE
I'm not seeing how that would overtax it. They both just trickle into the reservoir and the existing pump is more than capable of handling it. Also, the more a pump flows, the cleaner the lines are kept.
Shouldn’t it be dumping water away from the foundation
Beautiful not used basement! I WISH mine could be that empty!
I have a finished basement. Kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, not much "free" space, but no clutter either.
Richard sounded like he was about to cry at the end.
This is a Little Hero pump LH-1 They're out of business and this pump isn't available anymore. Can you recommend a replacement for this small size?
She was shocked that it worked at the end. 😂
Why not drain the water into the ac condensation pump? No need for all these extra piping.
That's what I said
Now you have two pumps pushing the same water twice as much work?😮😅
What stops the water from one pump running back down the line and into the the other pump?? Shouldn't it have 2 check valves?
I was wondering the same thing. My guess is the pvc was mounted at a slight angle for the water to flow out. However, he did say he wanted to keep the pipe as flat as possible... maybe he meant he wanted to keep it at the same angle
check valves built into both pumps to keep the water from flooding back once both pumps shut off. otherwise they would be running 24/7.
@@liskaerik not running constantly just inefficient because you have to repump the water that's was up in the pipe
why not just drop a line into the ac condensate pump from the dehumidifier raised on a little bench?
Moved the T right up next to an outlet?
I have a commercial grade based AIRE dehumidifier a 90 X and the pump is shot so I cannot get the water to expel out into the hose and into the washout for the laundry. I cannot find another Pump the main website doesn’t have any available is there a way to bypass that pump into another pump that’s easier to replace when it goes to laundry runoff runoff!????? I need help please suggestions and show me videos you got
so this pump will be able to pump the water up through the hose and into the pcv pipe against gravity? I want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly before I buy it.
Yes, the pump will send water up against gravity. She already has a similar pump for the AC condensate. I have one for my basement utility sink. I also have sump pumps that do similar things.
I think there’s still some PVC cement left in the bottle
Please tell us the brand of pump. Can't find one that submerges.
+Brian Haley Just look up small sump pumps, same thing.
this is great will the pvc pipe not freeze over and block it during the winter. This is the issue I had will just sticking the plastic one out the wall.
Thanks for stating this. I'm going to be using a condensate pump and was thinking about piping it out of my crawl space vent but if it's going to freeze up I'd better put it down my drain pipe.
Or into a sink or into the washing machine hose drain pipe….
Why not just elevate the dehumidifier then use the clear hose running to the condensate receiver from your ac/heater. Would that not pump the water out using the same pipe being used to divert the condensation from the AC or would it be to much volume for the receiver? in my opinion the less holes in a pipe the better
ive never seen a pump like that..where u buy one in ottawa canada
And where can ;you buy in the US.
Richard I need your expertise for my crawlspace. I think I need a condensate pump to get the water out of my crawlspace? Crawlspace is lower than then the first floor.
Someone please tell me why they couldn't just run a drain line from the dehumidifier to the condensate receiver on the central AC that was a few feet away from it.
They could, but that might keep running and burn that out prematurely
Anyone have a link for that pump or one like it?
No one asked that question for some reason 😂
AC pumps water into the dehumidifier and vise versa.
I thought it was this old house not this new house how about showing me how to do it in an old basement
I'd like to know the make of that pump
Couldn’t you just put the output into the AC pump?
there is gunk where the hose feed is need to know how to clean it out
Flush it with "Yellow Death".

I thought this was how to install a dehumidifier pump to get the water out it is not you’re showing the external parts of that you’re not showing how to replace that pump with an external pump or how to get another pump when you can’t find one available
Where can I buy this exact pump?
Someone previously stated the company went out of business and this pump is no longer made.
It looks like a little giant pump to me.
That gentleman is so fast and eficiente he looks almost Hispanic
Probably smells better.
