Ofc once or twice isn’t that bad but constantly is very harmful. I’ll get to more comments later but I just want to clear something up:
This is strictly my experience and I have a bad rap for using music for negative reasons and not positives. I have found it very beneficial by using it less and I’ve seen a lot of positive effects.
I should have mentioned this in the video -> Music is not the problem, why you use it is the problem. And that’s the same for many other bad habits like video games.
But this is just me and you may be different, music may help you tremendously, and if it does, keep listening to it, just being honest here bois and sharing from my own experiences ❤️

Me personally, I don't excessively listen to music, mostly I just listen to the Minecraft 1.18 soundtrack when I do my work, and I know that it can have these effects on people. That's why I don't look for a good sound system in my first car (preferably a 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible). I use it mostly because it calms me, and that is how it can be to many people. While this specific one doesn't really apply as much as the others to me, it still really helps. It helps me understand why my older brother blasts the loudest, most irritating songs at level 25 on his car's speakers. I used to judge him for this, and now, I understand why. Next time I ride somewhere with him, I'll try to understand that that's just how he deals with stuff. Thank you, Jak, and don't stop making these videos.

I'm a high school teacher and I'm here on your channel hoping to gain some perspective or insight regarding the lives of my own students. I usually take what you say at face value and consider that my own students might be experiencing something similar. But I feel motivated to respond to this video because it's the first time my own experience was so vastly different from yours. In my mid teens, I remember the voice in my head - not voices in a crazy way, but my own voice, my own inner anxiety - would get loud enough that it interfered with my waking train of thought. I listened to loud music (RUSH, primarily) to drown out what was basically the incessant screaming of my adolescent mind adjusting to the noise of world filled with extrinsic stimulation - it saved my sanity and even my life... and for many years, I thought my experience was normal.

Dude, the timing is so exact. I’m still surprised how you experienced the same thing as me. For me, I listen to rock music on the bus ride to school and home every single day ever since the school year has started, and only recently have I started to notice that it’s acting like a drug for me (I also thought of it as a drug, just like you). Whenever my earphones are out of battery, I instantly get very mad. I literally cannot ride on the bus without music. Then, today, your video popped up and changed my perspective. I have learned today that it’s not about the music itself, it’s about HOW and WHY you use music, and let’s just say I don’t use it as motivation when I’m on the bus. This video has only supported my ongoing thought of quitting listening to music every single day on the bus for no reason, to stop getting the dopamine I seek every morning and afternoon, so that whenever I do listen to music, it’s for a good and productive purpose. If I can’t quit listening entirely, then I’ll probably set schedule at least so it will save my ears too. Now I know you have experienced a similar thing too, so I am ready to put an end to this and use music as a tool and use it for the good and not the bad. I have only recently discovered your videos, but you have no idea how implementing the things you include in your videos is starting to help change my life. Thank you so much Jak, keep up the great work, sharing your experiences and changing lives, and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. I’ll be awaiting for your next video ❤️🙏.

It really just depends on why ur doing it. Sometimes its actually a lot more motivational (my run times can drop by 2 minutes with music) but other times it can be a huge bane esp if its distracting.
As for school work, now that i think about it, you could try listening to just one song that makes u most motivated. and listen to it on youtube without the autoplay. i've done it a couple of times and often the initial music helps you accidentally slip into that flow state and after that since there's no music playing, ur in a sustained flow state.

I've started only listening to game soundtracks. I've got a playlist of a bunch of my favorites, and its really nice background music. It doesn't take away focus and adds a little bit of flavor to what I'm doing. I've also noticed that because I almost exclusively listen to songs without lyrics now, I haven't had a lot of temptation to just drown myself in music for hours. I will say though, it does kind of make me want to play some old games.

(Also a little thing that could help if you don't want to ruin the re-play ability of a song you like while doing any of these things is, just listen to some Dixon rave music... It's dope and is always changing so you don't have to worry about re-play ability fatigue, love you guys and always work towards being your best!)

I came across this realisation recently.
So I'm sixteen and a writer (and I often use music when I'm writing.) It helps me slip into the mindframe of where my character/s is (or are) at. I have specific playlist that just help my writing flow better. Whether my character is going through a hard and deep depression or is happy being with friends or in love.
Anyways, recently I misplaced my mp3 player and was like, Oh well, it'll turn up. But when I was writing I couldn't exactly capture the emotions and actions that were happening in the moment. And I realised it's because I don't have music that normally slips me into that routine.
Thanks, for another inspirational video Jak! 🙏❤

I listen to music for like 10 minutes in the morning while I am brushing my teeth and dressing up and these things. It helps me to do them faster, so I won’t come late to school. Instead of depressing rap you should try stuff like metalcore or any other rock genre. It pumps you up without these deep feelings of loneliness. I used to listen to rap too, so I know what you are talking about, so I think changing the genre helps too and also not listening to music when you don’t need to. I don’t need music much while working out because I can still push to failure and I don’t listen to music earlier than 7 PM

I have not finished the video, only two minutes in but I’m gonna write this. Music is just like anything else. It’s just like drugs or alcohol or anything like that, a huge dopamine rush. Which you basically said towards the end, not the exact wording something similar. I have noticed what it does for me personally, I listen to all types of music but I’ve pulled off. With the car though, if I don’t have my AirPods in or music on, it’s constant dissociation, honestly without even music. The car is just, being able to hear everything on these new cars… I seriously can’t explain the constant dissociation in my life it’s scary. I definitely listen to rap or the modern pop and such, way less than like country or rock/metal or even EDM. With those three genres, I notice a difference in my mood. It’s a sedative. But see, with no real family other than my mom (all abusive and toxic and narcissistic it has just never worked with any of them, I’ve had to be the mature one being younger) I’d rather not be around those people. I haven’t seen a single friend in over two years, one who I hardly talk to now at 19 years old. I don’t even know if we’re friends anymore, but he’s one of the reasons I just want to work and work and work, wanting to better myself and shit.
All of my interactions are online, despite most of them being in my area or even family friends who I get along with way more, and are more family like than my own family. Things like that, it’s enough to keep anyone up at night or constantly dissociated.
I share all this because I use music as a jack of all trades basically. Sometimes it’s motivation, other times it’s to escape, it’s also to just better understand myself.
edit: my comment is long, but I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work and thank you

Well, every mornings and every night, I come home from school after spending an hour in common transport, and music is really helpful to make the time go faster. I listen to music every time I work or draw, and it mostly fade in the background after a bit because of how concentrated I am. Sometimes it doesn't because I don't want to work so it gets all my attention, but in the end it just helps me get things done. I don't listent to music to sleep or to wake myself up, those time must be quiet. Sometimes I drown myself in when I feel really bad but it's not too often so it's okay. Life is funny in a way, everything you do, or anything you don't do becomes a problem. Eventually, you can never find that peace we all are craving for. But in those shallow moments you feel like you solved it. You were happy, you felt fulfilled and most of all you didn't need anything, and the weirdest part is you didn't get the feeling by doing, nor not doing anything. The feeling I'm talking about can't be obtained by anymeans, the feeling can't be a reward for a task. It's just something that comes and goes.
Never can you find the perfect balance or avoid every "bad habit" afterall, what truly matters is the next step you take. Don't be afraid to miss it.

People listen to rap because of how good the beat sounds, it’s the generic crappy lyrics about drugs money and sex that make it bad and corrupt your mind over time.

I used to use music for the wrong reasons and I noticed my mood was the worst it could be and it was really hard to wake up and do anything at all. At first listening to these depressing songs made me feel like I wasn’t alone but over time is consumed me and just keep me at that same lonely numb state every single day. It wasn’t until I started listening to different music that I noticed my mood changing. Of course I’m still depressed, that hasn’t changed, but the way I deal with life has certainly been for the better. I still have unproductive days that I end up just listening to music I relate to because there isn’t anything else I can do, but i feel most days have been a lot better. I’ve been waking up at 3am and going to sleep early so I can do work that I was too tired to do the previous day. I settled down for hours doing tons of work. Right now I’m handling 6 classes in school and 3 online. I’m sometimes going to the gym (working on a schedule lol) and I’m spending a lot less time on my phone and playing games or reading comics that take up most of my day. Just glad I’ve found a medium where I just listen to music most of the time because it sounds hella good.

I've always had trouble focusing when doing homework, just naturally, I don't scroll on shorts or tiktok or reels or anything I just have trouble focusing when doing homework. But when I tried listening to calm music (for example: lofi, minecraft music, really anything peaceful) I find myself able to focus on and enjoy doing the work much more.

This is probably one the most recent realization I've had, and also one of the biggest. I'm only 13, I hope what I say is still somewhat understandable and relatable. Last year I was addicted to music, I think that's the best thing to call it. At school most work was on the computer, I would use earbuds and use them every minute throughout the school day, at home, when I went outside to walk I listened to music, when I was in the car I would use my mom's phone to listen to music. I used my airpods and earbuds I got an ear infection twice. In my opinion, it was the reason I lost so many friendships. I didn't interact with anyone in my class, I didn't interact with my family. This year I when to a different school, this was a school I went two years ago, I'm glad some people still bothered to remember me. In this school most of the work was on a computer and at this time I didn't have a phone. I feel like some sort of God made this happen, there were so many people suddenly trying to talk to me. I felt like there was nothing that needed to be filled with music. A few months later I got my phone, I went straight to listening like I did before, but it just didn't feel the same anymore, it felt like music was annoying.
I don't hate music now, I play piano. To me, the piano is the greatest gift I could ever get, it might sound weird to say, but I feel saved by it and I'm glad I didn't give up on it last year. From my piano I met my music teacher; who talks too much and ends up giving me life advice, I was able to go to a church to be an accompanist, from that I met so many other musicians, from that I could perform for others; the thing that I probably wished for the most from last year. I didn't reread and I have bad english (please correct my english if I'm wrong) so sorry for the bad writing!
Short answer: this is a good thing to tell teens, I have a lot of friends who listen to music everyday, one of them told me they listen to it even while they sleep; result: they all procrastinate. Saying music is like a drug is accurate.

Your videos are incredible, man. I’m wondering, how are you able to get these video ideas everyday and how do you keep up the dialogue going in your videos? I’m making CZcams videos and want to eventually make a living posting music and sound design but I have a second CZcams channel doing gaming and having fun, but I’ve always struggled to come up with ideas that aren’t boring or repetitive and I have a hard time to keep the dialogue going in the vids but to make it seems authentic. I’m genuinely curious and also asking for help.

i was going to the gym actively for the past 2 years and was always listening to music. Recently I also started bouldering. And only once used headphones. The climbing culture is to talk to with everyone there no matter if you know them and it feels so much better than in the gym where everyone has their earbuds in only ask you how many sets you have left.

Hmmm this is something I've never even thought of. Music has been an escape for me, but I think it's more constructive than destructive as it has been for you. When I feel sad and I listen to sad songs, it helps me process the feelings and then let them go. I don't get stuck in there. And then when I feel great, I'll listen to hype songs, often ones that I've written myself. Simply because I enjoy it and it doesn't damage my ability to appreciate the life I live. It's about the experience and the moment and being in love with the art. I am a music producer too, been writing for 10 years.

I once took a 6 month long break from music, I couldn't find a genre or songs that I liked and just found other stuff to do, I personally find it easier to get through work and similar without it as theres nothing to distract me.
After getting back to music it hasn't been as important to me and I completley agree, using it as a tool is the most efficent but also the occasional song to relax you I'd say is good, it can also be really helpful in hard times but listen to happier songs rather than sad ones and not too much, don't let it become an addiction just something to relax you too, and of course as described well in this video, as a tool.

I’m a high school student athlete who does cross country running and track I think coming into my junior year i think going into some of my races and studying for tests next year I’ll instead use no music to focus harder and preform at my absolute best at meets and tests. The times I do use to music is to feel good after tests and after meets as a way to celebrate rather than using it as an escape. Use it more as a way of accomplishment and the good vibes when I have no work to do. After seeing your video I’ll plan to implement this into summer training and get used to it slowly overtime

Music can make you so powerful and you don’t even realize it. I run A LOT and I don’t listen to music most of the time, but whenever I do, I can completely ignore the pain and fatigue that comes with running.

Im addicted to music too, i sleep with the radio on but i find it easier to focus with music, without music i actually get very distracted and get bored easily, music helps me with everything, though a lot of people say music is bad and a distraction and has no use, i highly disagree with them cuz i wouldn't get anything done without music, though i thank you for making this video and the others like this, this video just isnt for me😊thank u though❤❤
