    I been loving the show. Jacob Anderson has been phenomenal as Louis. His church scene in episode 1 alone was Emmy worthy. I think all the changes has enriched Louis' character. His racial identity adds a complexity to everything that happens now (Ex his actions that lead to the storyville race riots and his reactions to it) and it makes his dynamic with Lestat even more messy now.

    Louis in the tv series talks about his grandfather owning a plantation which his father ran into the ground before passing away and leaving Louis as the sole provider for his family. Black Creole families did in fact own plantations and had enslaved people that worked for them. During the time in which the tv series is set, the only (legal, if not respectable) way for Louis to make enough money to keep his family in the comfort to which they were accustomed was to be a pimp in Storyville. He had to be so many things to so many people, and Jacob Anderson's performance of Louis' code switching is remarkable. Even his physicality changes in many subtle ways, depending on who he talks to and the situation.

    • @jordanparker657
      @jordanparker657 Před rokem +3

      I only want to add that also Black people owned slaves as well not just Creole people. It's the quiet part of slavery people don't mention. Was looking into family in North Carolina and found an entire community of Black plantation owners.

    I’m sorry but Louis is definitely gay in this adaptation. The scene with Lily she says they usually “just talk” and in a later episode with Claudia he confirms he doesn’t like women but “used to pretend to”. Just don’t want people to think Lestat seduced him into being gay or something like that, he always was and that was a big aspect of his feelings of alienation from his family, brother, and society. Absolutely love this adaptation and this Louis much more than movie Louis and even more than book Louis tbh.

    So I'm guessing that this anaylsis is based only on ep 1 (since that's the only footage you used) but I can't see how you'd come away from the premier believing that Louis' queerness is a result of vampiric seduction. Before he even meets Lestat we see him checking out a man on the street, and it's paired with conversation about how he had to beat back these latencies in his nature with lies and delusions. That's what Lily is, a cover, a delusion.
    Lily herself mentions how they mostly just talk, and when Louis tries to maintain the facade of straightness by rejecting Lestat during their 3sum, she tells him "That's okay love," implying that she's known this about him and is giving him permission to just be himself here.
    There are other, more subtle, instances in ep 1 that imply that this is a terribly kept secret: Paul's inquries about the nature of their relationship, his insistence that Louis marry a woman, and his mentioning of mortal sins needing to be confessed. This one is more open to interpretation, sure, but given everything that surrounds it you can easily come away with the understanding that Paul knows Louis is gay and disapproves of Lestat because he is a temptation to give up the facade (among other things).
    Louis is seduced by Lestat, but not because he is weak, but because he is conflicted and at odds with his society because of his nature. In Lestat he sees power sure, but more importantly he sees someone who moves through the world unashamed and self-possesed, he sees freedom.
    Taking away Louis' already existing sexual orientation doesn't allow you to see why the alter pitch would be so enticing to him. Lestat is promising him love and acceptance, and enough power to be free. To be all the beautiful things that he is without apology.

    One of the better adaptions in regard to changing things but holding to the spirit of the original medium.
    I've read the first 5 novels many times as well as a few others. I really like the idea of starting Interview with the Lestat we see in the later novels.
    I don't like the vampires engaging in sex but I understand how it makes the LGBT aspects of the novels easier to portray on screen.
    Very impressed overall and hoping we get many seasons and a complete arc.

    Louis was a Creole, a man of African and French descent in New Orleans. As mixed race people, they had had privileges dating back to before the Civil War and the French culture that existed prior to the American government taking over the Louisiana Territory. Numbers of them had been wealthy because of their connections to the white French speaking elite. Louis had latent gay tendencies he talked about. These were awakened by his interactions with Lestat.

    I like how the opening is of a vampire's mouth opening, but it was of a city right side and upside down, with 2 buildings that looks like the Empire State being the fangs. It was said that Paul believed that God was communicating with him through birds in his head, which means he was mentally unhinged. Had he never jumped, he would've been sent to a psych ward, and who knows what it was really like for black people then.
    Next on the series; my advice Dean. Wait till the season ends so u have more of insight. But make a list of what to make, do so but don't post, incase u might want to change things. When the season is done, then add the finishing touches to post.

    Why didn't you just say you made this before the other even though it's still not too heavily focused on Louis' character arc for the show or Jacob's portrayal of Louis. That's the racial undertone I spoke of. You may not see it, but the entire fandom was in an uproar over him being black when they didn't even watch one damn episode. Like I said. It's a continuation, not a retelling. Though they are telling it from a more modern lens. It still brings different troubles for Louis. He's always been gay. I don't know when you made this. He just hid it. He's gay. A gay black man in the south dealing with the fact that being a vampire doesn't change the world around him. I think it's a point because Lestat doesn't see Louis' entire struggle. It's almost as if he ignores that his lover is not the same race as him and does not deal with what he does. It makes their relationship a lot more complex, volatile, and almost true to the sentiment a lot of people think. You can't love someone and pretend things will change because they are a vampire. He's still gay and black. I hold no malice. It's just a frustrating part to portray and be understood by those that don't see the entirety of the show. Not saying you are one of them. It's a conversation I'm not sure if you would have with me without bypassing what I said and just reading the racist undertone.

      For me personally, it was more about being completely book accurate without considering that the beauty of the story itself is that it can be changed for the purpose of a continuation.. in my opinion, Jacob is better than Brad at playing Louis, ok given he’s got more screen time to actually connect with the audience but I’m blown away by the series, I cannot get over its brilliance.. I think a lot of fans were questioning the racial profile of Louis but what I think so many people missed (including me) is that being a black vampire in those times opens up a whole different alley to further develop Louis character, it’s absolute creative brilliance.

I knew that the interest would be different and I knew that a lot of people would look at Jacob as Louis and not want to watch it due to the book. But the story has so much potential and different angles they can go. It really is an amazing portrayal of a prized book that isn't trying to compete with the movie. It's including the movie. If you don't agree I respect that but you come to me saying "that's the thing you never read the book you don't understand anything about the vampire Chronicles " your just being arrogant (saying such thing is not opinion) I'll care for others tho.

    I always had the impression louis is in the closet as a gay man. Remember back then it was seen as a bad thing. Religion and fear was prominant back then. Gay men were shunned in the bible. Only recently the lgbtq+ community is embraced in america. My impression was solidified at his desire to be with Armand when he met him. Claudia even sensed it. We also know Armand is bisexual. I never once thought louis was straight but "playing the part" society expected him. How many times have we hear of gay men raising families, hating their lives going to men in secret on the down low. Even today men still do this.

  • @achocolatebiscuit5087
    @achocolatebiscuit5087 Před rokem +3

    I love you videos but this one I'll have to disagree. I think it's trash .I understand that AMC wanted to make a huge change because they didn't want to just make another remake, but that's the issue. There's already one out there that already told the story beautifully. Another one would just be unnecessary. The changes are so altered, that you're better off making something entirely from scratch. Also this forced representation is so lazy and disrespectful to creators. If you have to alter Louis, and the settings ,and the overall plot so much just to put a black man its place, then that's your cue that you shouldn't. One thing a I like is that they show the homosexuality more freely. If this was an original series and not some heavily altered novel adaption, it would be alright. Not amazing, but good.
    In conclusion: Just give the poor brat prince, Lestat his time to shine by making instead a movie or series on "the vampire Lestat"

    • @_notmyproblem_
      @_notmyproblem_ Před rokem +4

      i respect that you don't really like it, but i want to say they didn't alter the time just to place a black man there. the writers wanted to set the story during another time in New Orleans that was exciting, which they thought the early jazz age. so from there, it kinda makes sense to have a Creole character. New Orleans is also majority Black. his family is from the lineage of gens des couleurs libres. his ancestors were free people of color who owned the original plantation and slaves as explained in the pilot. this also in a way ties it to Anne Rice's book Feast Of All Saints. AMC behind the scenes video explains the reasons of the changes well. Anne Rice was also aware of the revisions. yes, she died before full execution, but she was okay with the race change. I also read an interview with her where she says she doesn't mind creative liberties in adaptations. you can google it and find it somewhere.

      @@_notmyproblem_ Thanks for telling me a bit of extra info. I have the tendency to be more negative on race swapping characters because of the whole trend that's going on rn ( HBO max Scooby Doo for example). That is the main reason I have negative feelings towards the series- it's just too different. I respect that you may not agree with my take

    • @_notmyproblem_
      @_notmyproblem_ Před rokem

      @@achocolatebiscuit5087 that's totally understandable. some people really love the original story. the TV series is definitely it's own venture that's heavily inspired by, but not totally accurate to the books. not surprised loyal book fans have issues with the show. I just don't agree with some people (not you) who don't even know about the books, want to reject it as another "woke" hollywood type of thing without giving it a chance. as a TV show, it's actually very well written, acted and executed. The issues with race presented in the show are very nuanced, layered which adds to Louis' character. it's also just historically accurate to that time period. I agree the "place minority here" just because is annoying as a minority myself.

      they didn't just swap races, the story was adapted to mesh with the racial relations of the times. instead of a white man owning slaves on a plantation, he's a black man living in a post-slavery, segregated time-line. they didn't just swap his race to win brownie points or whatnot, with nothing more to it, the complexities of who he is and his race are intertwined and offer a lot of good commentary. the way they did it was actually extremely creative.
