The Amandebele people originated from the Nguni-speaking Bantu people who migrated southwards from Central Africa. They are closely related to the Zulu people and share linguistic and cultural ties.
In the early 19th century, under the leadership of Mzilikazi, a military commander who had served under the Zulu king Shaka, the Amandebele established the Mthwakazi Kingdom. Mzilikazi led his followers on a migration known as the "Great Trek" to escape conflicts with Shaka.
