Why are Manga Artists Dying So Young?

  • Hi, CZcams.
This one is more depressing than I thought, considering we're talking about manga artists dying and all that. I've got links below from some articles covering manga, the industry and Japanese work culture, but there's much more to be read about this controversial topic.
Remember that the creators of your favourite comics and manga are people and they need our support. Not just from a financial standpoint, but they need understanding from us, too. Most of us do, I'm sure, but spend some time out of your day to reach out and show appreciation to the artists you admire. I sure do appreciate it but then again I'm a glutton for validation so I may not be the best example out there.
    Have fun drawing, everyone.

It sucks that it's probably not anything new for Japan. Hopefully one day there can be a change.
Edit: Also, it sucks that so many can seemingly never get a break. It's wake up, eat, work, with maybe a toilet break, work, eat and shower then back to bed before repeating it all over again.

Let's hope it improves faster. Signs are good, but slow!

Most Manga and Anime art now being produced in Phillapjnes for roughly pennies on the dollar. It really the same with comics in the west. Really well done page takes an 8 plus hours per page. To meet impossible deadlines and keep profits up manga/comix book artists are work to death.
Yu-Gi-Oh Kuzuki Takeshi died a couple years ago outside of the work environment. His death was the exception of the norm meaning he drowned by trying to rescue couple people. At the time he wasn't producing much. Years back I was watching my favorite series Yu Yu Hakesho and the work schedule nearly killed the Author and Artists. The more recent problem health wise is Tite Kubo and Bleach.

Let's hope the Japanese government does something drastic to protect their citizens sooner than later, especially since the birth rate is so low. Losing almost three quarters of a million people per year who are under 60 is mindboggling.

I’ve read about one manga artist who slipped a disk in her spine from being hunched over a drawing table.

That's grim, and not surprising unfortunately.

That happened to me, although mine happened from lifting. I can tell you it can lead to some seriously bad things. I had to eventually get surgery

I’m an artist, and I see so many artists neglect their health for the sake of drawing.
It’s a silly-romanticized notion that an artists should suffer for their art, because why would you speed-run into life altering issues that will make it so much harder for you to keep on creating?
It will not make you a better artist; quite the contrary.
It’s not that hard nor expensive to make your work space more ergonomic (without those fancy chairs, tablets, tables, etc), and it’s definitely not hard to take even 5-10 minute breaks every hour to stretch out, walk around or rest.

@NanaTheDwarf yep, just a simple 5-10 minute break every now and then can make a massive difference.

As a weight trainer I can’t think of drawing art upon hours and hours to then workout. It’s a quick way to burn out in a month or two at best
