Fun fact: the reason Schumi ended up driving this (and pretending to be the Stig for a day) was because he was the only person that Ferrari trusted to drive it around the track. Talk about a compliment.
And also because Ferrari is extremely controlling of their image.

By FAR, the smoothest run around that track in the history of the show. I remember the first time I saw this, I instantly knew that wasn't the actual Stig driving.

It was 7 second faster than the ex-fastest car... I think 4 seconds has been gained by the car, but all of those 3 seconds more, were all coming by Schumi's foot
I adored schumi as much as everyone else but gaining 3 seconds a lap with an equal car in such a short track is astronomical. Ben collins is not a 7 times F1 wdc but he still a pro racing driver, i'd say schumi gain 1 sec at most from his skill

For what it’s worth too, they removed this from the list as it’s not a road legal car, so doesn’t count, the Gumpert apollo it dethroned would get a faster time with slicks etc!
Schumacher is one heck of a driver no doubt, but I don’t think there’d be much in it between him and the stig on this track as the stig will know every bump and crack on the whole track, I wonder if they let the stig have a go behind the scenes or not?
No disrespect to F1 drivers, but the chances of them being the actual best in the world is slim, in the sense that the chances of even being in a position to race in F1 is limited to a very small percentage of rich well connected people who also clearly have an amazing driving skill, however really if everyone was given an equal shot at racing F1 and given the same training and practice etc, what are the chances of the current F1 drivers all still being there! That said, people like Schumacher I believe would genuinely still be one of the top, even if everyone was tested to see, he and a few others are the rare cases where an actual best driver on the planet contender, also had the means and connections to get into that sport!

Aside from there being "no real" Stig, there's a reason for that: You can't cut that corner with a car like that. More prominent example today would be the "Karrussel" on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Somewhat available to the public cars go on the inner line. Anything starting it GT3 LM, or maybe even some "lesser" race classes will skip it. The suspension wouldn't survive it.

Schumacher's car Schumacher driving it, no wonder it was such a fast lap. Miss him a lot, hope he'll be ok, was the best ever driver imo.
It's awkwardly silent around him. That only means he isn't dying, he may even be in a good recovery. But all things considered, he is practically dead, his legacy never will die but I hope if he does make a full recovery somehow he doesn't try to go on the track.

@Hey Tex nope, from 2003 to about 2010 the Stig was Ben Collins. You can search him up, he does a lot of the stunts for Bond films these days
no, the only person with a black fxx was schumacher, the only person ferrari trusted to drive their fxx around that track was schumacher, he was only stig for that day though.
Damn, that must've been an awesome day for the Stig. Not only you get a visit from Schumi himself but you get to see him tear down the track live and with presumably a small amount of audience so you can also really hear that car roars too.
When you consider the fact that an actual F1 car lapped that track at 59 seconds really shows how amazing Schumi was behind the wheel. Hope he is recovering as well as he can. ❤️

The best lines I have ever seen of that track. I was not a Schumacher fan, but this lap shows a great driver getting the most from the car on that track. Apex perfection, fantastic how he gets the car under control on the big corners and how he manages the traction. Look past the time, look at the sheer control at pace he has from the car. Superb to watch.

I remember this episode all too well! Basically the most iconic moment in Top Gear history!!! The season 13 premiere with the Train, car, and bike race and the “reveal” of the Stig with Michael Schumacher was the best episode in my opinion!

Michael Schumacher, you are missed beyond words. I truly enjoyed Formula 1 racing but fell in love with it when you arrived on the scene. For me it will never be the same without your presence in the sport.

• #23 black and red
• #99 with white "bumper" (under the nose) and side stripes on fenders and doors
• #30 with white side stripes on doors
• Another black FXX with white side stripes on fenders and doors
Plus other FXXs painted in red, yellow, blue, white and many other color combinations.
His car was #30 (which he sold some years ago).
We can clearly see the difference between the excellent Stig and Michael Schumacher F1 (7 time champion). The throttle is maxed out and the position of the car in within inches of the exterior line constantly. The braking is impressive. Yes, the Champ is driving.
Slick tires. All race car. But yes, Schumi's talent was on another level. He only did a few laps to get familiar with it and then did the hot lap right away.

They only post cars you can drive on the road. That's been their motto from day one. No front turn indicators/bumper height. Plus, Ferrari only allows certain tracks. It's on MSN internet news today about Sleek, Expensive, & Terrible Cars. Article has the details
I think the reason was, it had race slicks on it.
thig is alot of the car at te top of the bord were prototypes that never ended up going into production. thats hardly fair ither, a10 or gumpit has never really seen the light of day as far as I know. or some of the other ones, and if thay have there never as hight powered and race speced like the oness that were sent on the show. in all the top 6 or 7 cars on there the enzo and zonda is the only ones that ahve truly been in production to buy with the same spec thay were tested with on top gear.

I used to got this car as a toy when i was young and i thought it was pretty sick looking than i saw it on top gear and im mind bugged. This car is a real art. Even 0.5 second is a mile in racing and you know its hard to improve even 0.1 second your best lap time, it gapped nearest competetor 7 seconds its a totally brilliant car
I'm glad I got to watch this in my early teens every Sunday, I got blessed

What a lap... see the Michael hands and glows on the steering is sad but still incredible emotional. The his could blod .. the total thrust in his ability. Just amazing ...
Say what you like but that car went around that track like no other on this show. And I'm not talking about the time. It handled every corner and turn with so much guile and elegance. Pure perfection.
In the hand of a "professional driver"..., pure skills!. What strike me every time i see that video, is the totally relaxing drive of Michael... in my personal opinion the best of all time!!
The real reason they took it down. Was that it was actually Schumacker driving it dressed as the Stig. He was the only person allowed to drive it and use it outside of a ferrari test track. You bought one you had to ring ferrari up and book where and when you wanted to drive it. That was the whole reason they did the Schumacker taking off the Stigs helmet bit.

johnny prothero I don't think that's the real reason, the Stig changed a few times and they didn't clear the board. And, well, it's not the first time they took a car down (although they usually do it immediately after putting it up). They have rules, it must clear a speed bump, be available to buy, fully road legal and have non-slick tyres. But yeah, the reason Schumacher was the Stig in this episode was because it was his FXX.

The first description I ever heard of Ferrari's signature engine sound was "ripping canvas" and it still holds today. Fantastic.

I remember seeing this on TV. I was absolutely amazed with the sheer speed of that thing. We've seen a lot of fast cars on the Top Gear track, but you could actually see how much faster this one was.

FXX is a racing car and it's all tuned and set for slicks on dry tarmak.
Mounting any legal street tire would just result in it spinning out of the track at the first bend...and being the car not street legal there is no reason it should mount street legal tyres.
It's like saying "oh look, the McLaren F1 just turned at Monza in 1.23s!"...."yeah but with street legal tyres it wouldn't do that" (duuuuh...). :-)
Ferrari just builds the world's fastest cars in general, it's not such a hard thing to swallow, mate.

The point is for the cars they put on the top gear lap time board the standards have always been that each car must be street legal from head to toe. Not talking about anything else or any other track or super car ya jackass. If we're gonna talk the Nurburgring you can look up lap times with that and Porche 918 is incredible

You know if Schumi had a hand in its development, it's going to have phenomenal handling.
He loved his cars to be pointy. I think he preferred to have just a tiny bit of understeer if the car wasn't as balanced as it could be.

Strider Sky I feel like this reply was meant for the CEO of Ferrari, not me. But anyways, once you start producing machines known worldwide and appreciated worldwide and ones that broke numerous records and have a mindblowing heritage, you're exempted for possibly not treating all your clients in the same manner... One that buys a Ferrari California will obviously be less special for Ferrari as a firm than one that purchases an FXXK.. It's the same with every automotive company - buying an M5 will assure you a better customer service than buying a 530d.

blacksukhoi I guess you missed the episode of Top Gear where Schumacher revealed he was the Stig. Until then it had been a very tightly kept secret surrounded by much speculation. There is no way Ben Collins could drive this car, therefore he is not the Stig. The Stig drove this car here.

Top Gear intentionally made Schumacher revealed that he's The Stig but actually only for this FXX lap, as mentioned before FXX only could be driven by the owner. Ben Collins is the actual The Stig, you can Google it. He revealed his identity and that terminated his contract with Top Gear.

The only black edition FXX out of the 30 produced, the stig driving is almost certainly Schumacher himself, about the same Liana lap, I think Top Gear is just complicating the speculation that the stig is schumacher. I think the stig is never the same person in all the different cars
My theory is that the stig, for these expensive specialty cars, is always the company test driver sent with the car.
aliGyo My thoughts exactly. The stig should be the best in that specific car. And perhaps with guidance from "the stig" who's the expert of the Top Gear track. Probably why we're able to see much faster laps since the last sacked stig.
