Probably the best ending to a Minami song I have ever heard.
The best ending to a song in general as far as I know. It's absolutely brilliant

I think this song is a perfect example of how a good song transcends language barriers. You don't need to understand a shred of a Japanese to feel the emotion in it. Seriously great music!

It's sad, because when somebody became a lier, her words lose all the weight and truth, even if they say "you have my word"; there words have no value anymore.
I know it because I'm one of them.
This song is so beautiful not just Minami's vocals which are also beautiful but the story that the song tells, and the animation. This song can only be called a masterpiece and nothing else, this song is 10/10 and you cant say otherwise

0:34 You said to me,
"Finally you can live comfortably"
0:40 Looking back on it now, I realize
what you said was a sweet trap.
0:48 Today I am still shaped
by people's ideals.
0:55 For example, I am formed
by fiction, false words,
false images, false minds.
1:02 Someone who looks like honest
is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
1:07 The liar will now pretend to be
the victim and start crying.
1:17 Oh, I want to escape from
this miserable world of 3D.
*You think so too, don't you?*
1:25 To virtualize a lie
1:27 It doesn't matter if it's
an unscientific current situation
or a fictitious statement,
1:33 give me love, love me.
1:37 Truth-telling words can
no longer heal me.
1:41 Just stay by my side for a little
while longer. I don't have enough
love. The proof of my life is
1:45 wounds, wounds.
1:47 Doppelganger in the mirror,
please take my place.
2:12 There was no more ephemeral
word than "forever ."
2:16 If it hurts my heart this much,
I don't care if it's fiction.
2:19 Of course I want to close
my eyes.
*You think so too, don't you?*
2:26 La La La...
2:44 You laughed at me next to
the tilted balance and said,
"There is no place for
you anymore."
2:51 I wanted to go back to reality,
but I can't go back anymore.
2:54 I didn't even know the weight
of a single word.
3:01 You said to me,
"Be my sacrifice."
and
I said to you,
"Be my sacrifice."
3:06 My utopia has disappeared
somewhere.
and
My ideal mirror has disappeared
somewhere.
3:12 You revealed your true
personality and gave me
a fake smile.
3:23 You suck in lies over and
over again, and then come up
with new lies, right?
3:31 I can't become you who is
just a vessel.
3:35 All of place is created
by my ideal.
and
My current situation is
all because of my ideal mirror.
3:52 I wanted to break this situation,
but I couldn't.
3:56 Because my utopia was
only here.
and
Because my ideal mirror was
only here.
4:00 I reached out my hand
for no reason,
4:07 *into the mirror.*
4:10 To virtualize a lie
4:12 An unrealistic reality and
a non-existent mirror image.
Give me back the fading
boundaries.
Please give me back.
4:22 Please give me a chance
to try again.
4:26 The real me is here!
4:28 _that's not me that's my fake._
4:30 Don't love the fake me.
Please don't forget the real me.
4:36 I swear.
4:41 “I won't lie to you again.

Lemon Tea? Haha my initial thoughts exactly. However there’s been studies done about how people who deal with depression often find comfort in melancholic/dark music, movies, books, etc. It can be cathartic for them because their internal struggles are perhaps validated and they feel less alone in their inner world. I'd been listening to this song for years and I know that people tend to say "this song has saved me" a lot when it's not actually like that. But this one really did. The lyrics and powerful melody, your emotional voice, had shaken my soul up. Made me realise I'd been miserable because I tried to become that "perfect reflection". And I took the pledge "I won't lie to you again". It wasn't easy at first, of course. But now, years later, I've come very close to living as my true self, to becoming aware of what it is that I truly want, not what other people want me to be like. And I feel so much happier, the future seems bright. Thank you so much!

This song is so deep. We kill ourselves to fit in with others, satisfy others, and this process starts to create a new me.
My understanding of this song.
The girl in the white one-piece is the original girl. In order to fit in with others, she started to act differently, which created the new her; the girl in the black one-piece. This led her to create two personalities: The real her(white one-piece) and the fake her(black one-piece).
Slowly, she loses her understanding of herself. She doesn't know if she was the "real" her or not. The "fake" girl took over and became the "original". The "real" girl was then trapped inside the "fake" girl. She attempts to gain herself back by killing the other "her", as shown towards the end. However, the image changes to the "real" girl getting choked by someone(probably the "fake"). Then, it switches back and forth until the "real" and "fake" girls are shown choking themselves.
The "real" girl thought that by "killing" the "fake" girl, she can become herself again. But in the end, she ended up killing herself.
Though we try to act differently to superficially satisfy others and blend into a larger group, it is only killing our true emotions and hiding them away, deep inside ourselves. What an accurate representation of society. This was very sad yet it was so relatable and beautiful. I love Minami san.
Edit: Thank you all for all the likes. I didn't know so many people would like my comment.
I just wanted to add something. To everybody reading this, I love you. And I promise you, more people out there love you too. You may think not, but you matter.
Please be who you are. Please be who you want to be. Because that's what makes us unique individuals. It is never, ever wrong to be different. People shouldn't tell you who you have to be. That is for you to decide. No matter where you're from, who you used to be, who you are right now, or who you want to be, I love you. From the bottom of my heart, I hope that all of you have a happy day tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and forever on. Even though I'm a complete stranger, and you don't know who I am, please know that I deeply care about you. I hope this comment was able to make you smile and give you hope. :)

in my opinion, the black and white version of them is the real one.
Why you create those new personality? coz your current personality created it and thus, it's also considered your real personality.
LIke, when your personality changed when something happen. some people may say that you're not ur usual self and told you to be what you used to be.
Because in your new personality, you tend to lie so you can blend in to the community.
But in truth, those personality is actually your 'True' self.
Coz your previous personality have met a certain condition that trigger the creation of this new personality.
Why get confused at both of your personality? In the end, both of them are 'You'.
'We are what we are'. Even if your personality change, the one who trigger that change is your previous personality.
Why should you get so confused thinking about it?
sorry if i'm wrong.
@@Vorltzs dont be sorry bro everyone has hes own vision, for me what you said is true but when the condition that made you changed is very trivial and dont deserve to change then its a problem.
4 me if i changed for real reason then there is no fake side of me i just improved but if i have 2 of me, one is the real that i act when am home and with my self and another i act when I'm with fake friends or people i dont like so i do everything to make them dont go away from me because i need, want friends this is the problem so when i try to dont go with these guys or something like that i cant cause i did this for years so i cant go back now to my real one and if i did, ill lose a lot of good things cause my fake side has a good things even if its 2 or 3 it still that ill lose them.

that hiccup thing at 1:45 makes the music itself beyond masterpiece. it's like the singer herself dedicated her life and breath into this music
great attention to detail, that's something that they could've easily edited out but chose to leave.
Many people comments about the lyrics of the music, but besides it, the way that it's sung is really a masterpiece, and it's a pattern in every Minami's musical production.
"When our image never goes hand in hand with reality, then how can we find our true selves, how can we find something genuine?"
-Hikigaya Hachiman
This song really reminded me of that phrase immediately
I'm sad Oregairu got postponed
@Ken Mettier Oregairu hits way different from any of those tho ;_;
Honestly it feels like an idol's quote
I find it kind of funny how most other people freak out when their voice cracks when they sing, but for Minami it actually makes her song better.
I agree
I guess it's the emotion she puts into it.

I've seen and heard cover after cover of this song but not one of them even approaches the sheer raw emotion and perfection of voice that Minami displays, genuinely captivated and bewildered.

Hinakichu, is that you Hina? It's mon from tbhk discord!

You don't need to know the meaning of the lyrics to understand that she's hurt, she's mad and she also want to live..but it's so hard huh, being your true self, with out being judge. Guess we're all waiting for someone to see the true us. To see the real us and still accept. That is, if there's still someone out there.
bruv
That really does hit the spot......
That's just how powerful her voice is i guess.
stop waiting for someone to accept you and just go make money and self improvement, sure you might be hurt and dead inside, but its better to be hurt and dead inside and having money than being broke
why do these japanese songs feel like the singer is always going through something depressing
This song as well as crying for rain are my absolute favorite minami songs. She makes every emotion in me surface with her beautiful lyrics and voice
4年程前に聴いたのを最後に、どう調べても見つけられなくなって、半分諦め、半分ヤケになっていました。今日偶然再会して今年一すっきりした心持ちです。
I have to admit this one really affects me deeply. When I listen to this I can really start to understand why people love Minami so much. Every single thing about this song from the message to the music to the video itself to, naturally, the amazing singing is just so powerful. Even the guitar playing is just amazing.
Normally I can't listen to the same song so much in a single day, but this one just gets me.
Could you maybe explain what you think the message is? I feel like I'm very close to understanding it, something about the fear of becoming a false persona and forgetting who you really are, I think, but I'm not quite sure. Whatever way I try to look at it it feels like a few pieces don't quite fit. I can feel the emotion and the song's well-sung, but I feel like this could really be one of my favorites if I could better understand what the lyrics are about.
@@FanZ2626 Well, I could be entirely wrong. I'm just saying how it feels to me. It may even be somewhat up to interpretation, though this one seems much more direct and clear than most.
What you said is pretty close. This one speaks to me because it's something I've dealt with in life and seen so many others *not* deal with. We feel disliked or even hated by others because they expect certain things. So we build a persona -- a doppelganger to replace us in public (or I like the metaphor of a mask a bit better) -- to make these people like us. In so doing we create a version of ourselves that must lie and do things we hate just to try to be liked.
Rather than just simply forgetting though, I think most people ultimately are simply taken over by that doppelganger. They *become* the image of themselves with all the lies, even sometimes hate. Not just forgetting that it's supposed to be in image, but actually truly starting to believe all the stuff they said and did. (But then to some extent I suppose some may still know deep down inside it's wrong, however, they can't admit it at this point.) I believe this is the danger inherent to the entire process.
Now, I did this too. I probably wasn't as good at is as many people, but I always hated my doppelganger -- or mask or whatever. And this, to me, speaks to the way at the end of the song and video she's screaming that she doesn't want this. Not to mention the obvious self-loathing and self-destruction at the end. I think that is the fight in having to eliminate only one and the difficulty in actually doing so.
@@NazoKiyoubinbou I see. You’re probably about right, I was thinking it was probably something like that, although I still can’t quite seem to fit the lyrics and/or visuals into a very cohesive narrative. That may just be partly the imperfections of translation and partly the fact that most song lyrics don’t make much literal sense. But I think I, in particular, have a hard time identifying with that message, and am thrown off by what this song seems to mean by “my ideal reflection”, because I have my own personal anxieties and doubts related to imposter syndrome, but in my case it’s more about feeling like I fail to live up to the confidence and competence I try to present myself with than like I’m acting like a different person than my true self. That is, I often feel like a stupid child who’s trying his best to pretend to be a competent adult. Both issues have a sense of guilt that you’re deceiving others with a mask that’s different than the truth, but in my case the “ideal self” that I try to act like is the kind of person I really want to be, still me but just better and stronger and more mature, and I would consider my internal perception changing to match that persona to be a good thing. But the feeling this song seems to portray and that you’ve talked about seems to be more about acting like someone sideways of yourself, different enough that becoming that act would feel like betraying and/or abandoning who you previously were, and without necessarily being an overall improvement. I don’t know whether either issue is better or worse to be dealing with than the other; but it is interesting to think about how many different ways there are to be dissatisfied with yourself. On the other hand, you could argue that that dissatisfaction reflects a drive for self-improvement that pushes you to understand yourself better and grow as a person, so maybe it’s not all bad.
@@FanZ2626 Perhaps I can help on clarifying at least what it means to me by the "ideal reflection." We don't just create these masks or images of ourselves. The whole goal is to not be hated -- even to be loved (because deep down inside even the most antisocial hermit still hates to be hated and wants to be loved, just has probably basically given up.) The image must reflect what seems "perfect" to these others. That can include some really bad tendencies out of necessity however. For example, it seems to me that the singer is upset that the image presented to not be hated by others must gossip in the worst sorts of ways -- promoting oneself by putting others down. No doubt recognizing this for the horrible and hateful thing that it is, they want this to stop but can't escape the situation. Though there are a number of different directions this could go, the basic gist of it is that the image created is to try to please others but isn't really you, so I don't think that specific part should be taken entirely too literally as I think it is meant to reference this entire sort of thing instead of one exactly specific instance.
I've had my own share of anxieties in no small part arising from never being as good at creating that fake image as many are. Not conforming in anything and everything makes one automatically hated. As should be clear even just by the music I listen to, I never was very good at conforming sufficiently. But it isn't just a matter of accepting yourself. A sort of balance has to be reached. For most this is, perhaps, a little easier since they don't have as far to reach, but for those of us who are this far out it is a constant struggle. It would be all too easy to go too far one way or the other and either become a shut-in or to have the "ideal reflection" take over and not really even be able to live your own life anymore.
@@NazoKiyoubinbou That all makes sense. In my own case, I've never been willing to do anything I thought was wrong or completely fake for the sake of fitting in, although I've also never faced much pressure to do so; probably partly because I seem to have been lucky enough to grow up mainly around nice people, and partly because I've always been a shy introvert who kept to a very small social circle and was mostly content with that. I don't know if I would have acted differently if I'd encountered more actual rejection; I've never believed that I SHOULD care what other people think of me, but I've realized that despite that a large part of me DOES care a lot. That seems to be a deeply ingrained instinct for most of humanity, and for sensible evolutionary reasons, since many early humans lived in small tribes wherein social rejection could literally get you killed; check out the "Wait but why" article "Taming the Mammoth" for an interesting discussion of the topic of the human social insecurity instinct and possible strategies for dealing with it.
In any case, although I'm hardly an expert, I think humanity is big and diverse enough today for anyone to find people who will accept them without needing to try to conform, so it's just a matter of finding them. Easier said than done, sure; but the modern world, especially the internet, DOES at least make it easier for people to connect with one another than ever before.

I had forgotten the blessing of having official translations of japanese songs.
I've always love/hated this song, due to the melodic progression, and feels like it drags, with the tempo changes.
Yet, the lyrics are some of the heaviest hitting I've ever read.
Minami's voice and delivery, brimming with emotion, delivers the song as raw and painful as it can be.
And the animation makes it even better.
