  • Pioneer DJ's DJM-V10 digital DJ mixer is the first in a new series of products, aimed at audiophile DJs and those with more complex mixing, routing and performing needs than average; the kind of DJs for whom the DJM-900NXS2, for instance, may seem a limiting choice, capable though that mixer is.
    As such, it is Pioneer's answer to the mixers of Allen & Heath, and especially to the PlayDifferently ModelOne, offering a large array of inputs, outputs and routing options, giving an unprecedented level of control and myriad options for workflow customisation.
    We take a deep dive into the DJM-V10 in this review.

    I had the Pioneer DJM-1000: Pioneer's first 6 channel 24/32Bit Mixer that was $4,200.00, back in 2004. I worked double shifts for 6 months to purchase it. It was massive and the build quality has yet to be rivaled. The level of detail that went into the mixer was beyond impressive, the resistance channel faders, switchable channels, solidness of the mixer build, the isolator section... dear all that is unholy... talk about control with a great fee. For me, the mixer has always been my center point. The last decade of DJM's hasn't really impressed me. When I saw the V10, it got my attention immediately. I reluctantly traded in my DJM-1000 for the V10. The first few days, I felt I made a mistake waiting for the V10. Upon opening and playing the mixer... let's say, I have no regrets. Initially, I was completely overwhelmed. However, the layout with how everything is interlaced with the graphical squares separating each section, in matter of days, become intuitive. No, I haven't mastered the mixer. I just know what the buttons do "in theory".
    Beyond happy with my purchase. I will add, this does not look or feel like other Pioneer mixers.

    I love the "NO CLICK IN THE CENTER" style filter! That's why I'm still rocking the DJM2000-Nexus. When useing a ''CENTER ZERO POSITION'' style encoder, it's so easy to be slighty off center "especially if the mixer has had alot of use, because the center notch becomes week & less accurate over time''

  • @babaenver06
    @babaenver06 Před 4 lety +1

    I don't know if you have noticed it Phil, but the reason that the moment you turn on the filter and it starts to be in effect regardless of your turning the channel filter knob is because you have left the filter knob on the master channel open. I could sense your inner reaction that says "there is definitely something wrong but I will slide into the skid because I don't want to shoot this again" :)

Technically it's a brilliant feature and for people that know how to use it right it'll give them a lot more freedom and make their life easier. I called up my one millionaire DJ friend (that I don't know) to check this out. After searching for his keys for 15 minutes in his 10 room mansion, we hopped in his Bugatti and drove to our local Guitar Center to pre-order this Mixing desk. incredibly, they laughed at us and told us..1. It's for DJ's and 2. No, we won't have this on the showroom floor or maybe never. I know, I couldn't believe it either. They also said no, we don't carry Rooters here. Unbelievable.

    I'm digging the beat FX buttons. I typically run my fx in one channel and this looks nicer than the knob for toggling channels especially compared to a 900 nxs or older trying to see what channel you on in a dark club. Compressor would be nice for playing old tunes to compared to just trimming them up.

    The send FX is great, but the filter doesn't seems really intuitive, as I heard, there's is no "0" point on it, so once it's on, it's on and you ear it, you can't let it on and play with it when needed (on A&H mixer it's the same but seems more light on the 0% position so it's still playable - but not really intuitive too).
    Also, it's great to have the possibility to put some pedal and FX and all that kind of external stuff, but it's sad that the crossfader part is limited in the setting. Those kind of mixer never have the same function as the S9, with crossfader/fader precise curve and tension adjust, they could put it on the front like on the S9, on in the screen menu, and that would open lot of possibility for turntable and live performance.
    Also not having a router build in, on that kind of high end level, especially on a 6 channel mixer... Hope they plan to have something with their future CDJ/XDJ line to compensate that, like a link in/link out to put player in serie and have your usb accesible on all player.

      The zero point changes depending if you’re using hp or lp. They really should have on/off switches per channel because it looks like whatever you do on the filter is going to affect every channel so you really have to be careful especially if you’re playing on more than two channels. The problem is they’re copying the model one only halfway; if you want to encourage filter mixing you should implement it right.

    i mix stuff from many time periods and getting all the various tunes to sound ok together is tricky especially on my small system.I sometimes notice the lack of oomph when i try and mix and old tune fro the 60s next to something really modern.I might match beats ok but the 60s track can sometimes sound a bit weak.When recording a mix i can fix this a bit in post but its even more of a challenge live and its not just a case of volume but a duller less bright sound like the 60s tune is 480p and the up to date is 1080p or worse 4k if you get my meaning.

Although I would miss the ability to route my external FX units through eachother (Delay>Reverb), I'd imagine just pairing one of my outboard units with the build-in Beat-FX would accomplish the same task. Definitely curious to try one of these out.

    What I like about Denon/Pioneer is they manage to lower the cost of gear across the board. A&H (and PLAYDifferently) are very much innovators, Pioneer comes in and works out how to lower the price. This is progress and good for everyone. If you only need 2 channels then there are loads of awesome/cheap mixers out there just for you! This is a new category of mixers for artists that are running loads of gear onstage or performing with Ableton. Very cool stuff. Anyone that doesnt want a Model 1 + external audio interface, then this is a great option for you.

    The Mid's here are called "Swept Mid's" what this does Is, If You are playing a Motown Track, through the Compressor, The High's (Treble) are effected and sound Thin and Harsh (like some Sixties Music), So with the "Swept Mid's" You can now Tone down just the Vocals, So more control over the Middle, Vocal range without touching the main Treble Knob. and killing the High Hats with It. Something all controller's should have by Now. One Gripe other than the Mic's are overlooked as a Secondary thing. Is the lack of a Mono Button next to the Fader. Playing some Tracks from the 50's and sixties that are Electronically Stereo-ed (Horrible) This gives You the Option of Going Mono on them ones. Formula Sound were the only ones to address this. "Unity" just means same out level at some point as input level at another point in signal flow. I think you meant to just say 'get your average loudness similar between the tracks'.
    What would have been even better than the Comp control would have been a Dyn control with 12 o'clock off, compressor on one side, and expander on the other. Lots of Utility settings tweaks you could also allow the adjustment on for those possible, too... ratios, levels, thresholds, etc.
    They probably used the plastic touch screen so it could be pressure sensitive instead of capacitive, which is less prone to interference and accidental presses. Quite a smart idea with making part of the control over the master effects a touch screen like that, IMO, as it allows changes later.
    Definitely going after A&H and Playdifferently with that, especially the Xone 96 and DB4. Maybe also the Formula Sound FF6.2 and Rane MP2015. I assume the Rotarykits.com crew will be out with a mod. It’s lacking simultaneous high and low pass filters, full effects sections per channel, and full matrix inputs of the DB4. The Playdifferently, FF6.2 and MP2015 also have the ability to double up on both high and low pass on the same channel. Pioneer probably would have been better off replacing the treble with a dedicated LP and the low tone knob with a dedicated HP and lose their shared knob. That said, it looks like they went with normal EQs and not fixed or optional isolators on the channels, which is a good idea in and of itself even compared to the MP2015’s current use of only reduced-group-delay quasi-FIR 2nd-order isos on the channels without any bypass or optional EQ mode possible considering it's already got a master IIR 4th-order master iso.

    Pioneer may have changed the ADC architecture, as it appears to be the first major Pioneer digital DJM to have fixed-gain analog inputs with the lack of the DJM900NXS2 and Tour "clip" channel LED indicators for the true analog trimming. Not really necessary to have done it this way, but everyone else does digital DJ mixers this fixed way. I’m curious about the DSP and audio processing code library they went with, because the particular TI one they've been using since the DJM-800/1000 on has used very similar coding even with each new model, including the newest with double float, with kind of a bloated low-end, among other things. Their master out section is still kind of wanky, though, with boost over unity, a different metering scale, and an extra red. As a definite first for Pioneer, they did finally mark the unity with a specific zero on the master knob, but I doubt they’re giving a -10dB option in the Utility settings like Denon gives you. Really no reason for it to have boost over unity on the master.
    6 SPDIF inputs is a first and welcome. The AES/EBU master digital out from the Tour is also welcome.
    Not quite sure how you persuade the Xone analog, Playdifferently, or Formula Sound crowd to come over to digital. Certainly X1700, DB4, MP2015, and even the PPD9000 (that had channel compressors, by the way) proved you can get digital sound that meets or exceeds even the best analog DJ mixers, so perhaps this is just a matter of getting audiophile DJs to listen to the V10 or the other top digital boards.
    And may I just finally point out those meters? I guess meant to help people with color blindness. Lots of indications of Pioneer trying to play catch up with other brands on the V10.
    Nonetheless, this is a very exciting mixer.

      Thanks for your very detailed addition to our analysis, Reticuli.

    • @dsquareddan
      @dsquareddan Před 4 lety

      There’s a -12dB master attenuation setting.
      Also I suspect they did away with the channel Clip, because they have “64bit processing” now, so the headroom is probably well and above what the VU shows.

    • @Reticuli
      @Reticuli Před 4 lety

      @@dsquareddan Is the -12dB master attenuation before or after the master knob, though? They only need a digital domain -10dB attenuation before the master knob (or I guess -5dB according to the knob labeling) and then a mic/line setting for the analog out itself for people who don't know how to properly use studio boards :-)
      The only reason to get rid of the channel "Clip" word LEDs would be if the gain/trim stages are now purely digital domain and the ADC stages are fixed gain... i.e. the trim knobs now don't do anything to analog inputs going into the converters as on prior Pioneer digital DJMs. The double precision float DSP has nothing to do with this and was also present on the NXS2 and Tour mixers. From the DJM-800/1000-on, though, their ADC gain/trim architecture has been different than other digital DJ mixer designs, so I'm wondering if they've changed that now. I never really considered it an issue except from the standpoint of metering prior to the "Clip" LEDs, as there are pluses and minuses to each approach.
      So since the "Clip" word LEDs are gone, are the ADC stages fixed gain/trim now like most other digital DJ mixers?
      Still wondering why they decided to do the LP filter with a dry/wet left-to-right knob and why the HP filter isn't on the lower Send knob so you could double them up. The filter selection and resonance is also shared on all the channel filters. I'm curious who they actually had test run this design, because it's got some goofy choices.
      It honestly looks like a copy-paste job from MS Paint. If you wanna see a really useable copy-paste job, do a search for my 3CH matrix version of the PlayDifferently.

    It is curious that there are these instruments, certainly excellent, with so many buttons and controls that perhaps a DJ will only use 10% of them in a console made up of 6 CDJs, 1 or 2 mixers, 2 laptops with traktor or serato, an FX, a groove box, all controlled via MIDI, USB cable, LAN cable and never before in this historical period has the music been so minimal, I would say spartan, it's just percussion with the bass at the limit of saturation, loop effects, some synthesizer with a few very low notes. But how did Tony Humpries, David Morales, Marshall Jefferson, Frankie Knuckles, Danny Tenaglia do it? All you needed was a 2-channel mixer with the microphone channel used as the third channel, a Roland TB 808, a couple of turntables, some chalk to mark the cue points, for the more technological DJs a simple Amiga PC or an 80386 with card Roland MPU-401 audio and this was enough to create unforgettable melodies! I don't think David Morales used a virtual DJ to create the space cowboy remix, he only had jamiroquai's voice and some analogue instruments

      @@digitaldjtips No not at the moment but the being able to have the same input on different channels with seperate effects, eq, filters, etc. Is a detail that seems very appealing to me because it adds the possibility to get into creating whole new compositions as opposed to just mixing records.

    Usual question : is this class compliant on the A/B USB ports ? Wouldn't spend 3K and depend on Pioneers' willing to update the drivers.

      We don;t have the answer to that at hand, there were no specs with it as it was a pre-release model.

    Hello Mate. I enjoy your videos and have a lot of respect for what you guys do. I was wondering how's the sound coming out from an Analog source (Vinyl), while I know the sound quality is subjective but we can all agree (or not but doesn't change the fact) that the recent Pioneer mixers were terrible on Analog source (Including the NX2 and S9) I was hoping this compressor would create a decent balance even though I've lost faith on Pioneer especially since this seems to be a fully digital mixer... That's exactly why pioneer isn't competing with most A&H, because they care about Analog... let's not even mention the Mastersound. Since this is a game changer (in theory) and for the price tag, I was hoping they would have done something about that. How does it sound on vinyl?

      We only had the mixer for a few hours, and didn't get to test the vinyl performance, but as they are selling it as an "audiophile mixer" I would guess that they'll have upgraded the phono preamps.

      @@digitaldjtips Please let me know when u get a chance to test it with record vinyl, the definition of "Audiophile" for Pioneer is flexible. Many thanks

    Now we need a 4 channel version and a more affordable price and this could become an industry standard mixer
