This video is one of the best I've seen come along in years. The way the story unfolds in brilliant. Hardy and Lainey's voices just complement each other so perfectly.
Love that you caught that about the gun! A lot of people don't get the double meaning, that her day of justice did come from a 'judge under the seat' and I have to say I love that line so much.
There was a case near where I live a few months ago, where a woman went into the parking lot and a man was beating on his girlfriend; the woman who comes up on the scene, she had a permit to carry and she pulled out the gun and told the man to stop and once he saw a gun aimed at him, he ran like the coward he was.
The cops were called and one cop sort of lectured the woman with the gun, saying she should have called them first before pulling the weapon and she pointed out that in the time it would have taken her to call, he would have caused his victim more damage and she reminded him that she had her permit.
Cop asked her, "What would you do if he had come towards you rather than run off?" and she said as calmly as possible, "If he had taken two steps in my direction, you would be at a very different crime scene because I would have put at least three in his chest."

I appreciate your reactions. Having said that where i grew up we were taught at a young age if your dad, mom, uncle, cousin, friend gave you that look and said "wait in the truck" or "get in the car" , you dont ask questions, you dont argue you just do it. I get not wanting to see a life taken, but the justice system does not protect these women. Ive seen survivors say the police stood in their living room looking at the marks on her neck and telling her there was nothing they could do. She looked up the laws in her state later to find out that according to the law he was supposed to be arrested and removed from the home, and they had done nothing. Everyone, even her family knew what was happening and they did nothing. And how many times you watch the news to see the man makes bail just to go home and kill her. Its not so cut and dry and sometimes this is what it takes and we need more men like this one. She got the only justice she would ever see, thanks to him.

I love your reactions to this video. Hardy is one of the most prolific song writers of this decade and his songs are lyrical gold. This particular song hits all three sides of the issue with DV. He addresses the victim, the rescuer, and the abuser. The victim is in the middle of a back woods road walking away from the abuser but knowing that in small town America many times it is impossible to get away. You have the people who absolutely can not stand an abuser and instinctively wants to put him in his place. He also addresses the abuser in the song who is in his home drunk off his rocker, threatening her with his shot gun and happens to be passed out at that moment. This scene happens way to much in real life. He has been in prison for 60 months = 5 years and she is still waiting in the truck for him and visits on visitation days. Lyrical GOLD!

Along with all the other comments, everybody has their own moral code ‘two wrongs don’t make a right’ that’s for sure but I think this video was particularly made to bring out awareness of abuse and in all aspects of it due to the fact that we’re talking about it right now and that’s something very important because there’s so many men out there they don’t know how to be in a relationship and there’s a lot of women out there that will take it because they don’t know either it’s just the way of the system of things. And the way that the laws are now there not strict enough for domestic abuse in my opinion, and that’s the reason why people in general get away with this kind of abuse along with child abuse but anyways, I really enjoyed y’all’s reaction. Thank you for sharing. Take care and be safe. ❤️🫶🏻🤠

I have seen comments such as, he had never been there and did not know her. He should have driven her to the police station.
I will say this then leave the subject alone.
There are adults out there who were once too young or weak to defend a sibling from an abusive father. Several attempts for the siblings to run away resulted(rightly or wrongly) in them being returned to a home more like Hell that only got worse then. Young boys have been beaten and tossed to the side and had to watch through the blood running into their eyes as their older sister is beaten to death. They are helpless to save their sister then but grow up and become adults. The principal in this song may not have seen a stranger at midnight in a driving thunderstorm. He may not have been able to save his sister but he is not going to trust the system to save this girl. He had a decision to make....

Both Hardy and Lainey are amazing singers though and Hardy is great at story telling, which is probably why he wins song writer of the year awards lol

@@jcsreactions5735 It's funny because I didn't notice it at first since it was spelled correctly everywhere else you typed it... I even thought I was just hungry for a second and scrolled to make sure LOL. Yes, I agree. It would be much better if the topic didn't exist at all and it's great it's doing so well, but I don't know if it's because people are just so used to it now and it's more talked about that it's "okay" (if that makes sense). It should never be okay, more victims die by their ex partners when they try to get away and the system doesn't really help them (they just catch and release). I've even seen/heard a few stories where the cops said 'it was out of their hands' until something happened. There's a movie called 'Telling Amy's Story' where the detective said they actually use her case as a way to NOT handle the issues. It was on PBS channels and you can find it on here. For it to get to a point where it's used as a case study, means the system is broken.

Catchy and compelling song/story. Civilized society involves a social contract that protects the weak. Our laws seek to ensure this -- but they and our justice system too often fall short. There are times when the right thing to do is illegal. Some (many) of those times are the result of someone going outside the social contract and preying on others. The protagonist taking limited information, making a life-altering decision and then acting on it may have been what I'd consider rash and short-sighted, but I won't say his actions were wrong or that he is a bad man for acting in the way he did. A good man is not a harmless man, but rather a man capable of great violence who voluntarily keeps that violence restrained.

The pistol is a 357 magnum not a Judge. The judge under the seat is a metaphor for the judge under the seat is the jury and sentence of the guys crime of beating her. This song has so much resonance because for what ever reason, maybe his mother was abused by an alcoholic, he felt it was worth it to fix a wrong that he couldn't when he was a boy. He knew he could survive prison but she wouldn't survive living with that guy. He traded his life for hers.

A mans honor is what he is. He knew he couldn't walk away and leave her to more torment and possible death. He told her to "wait in the truck" because it was in his hands now. This is his choice, his sacrifice, his consequence and he wanted her to have no part of that. He made that choice with his honor intact, he was sentenced with his honor intact, he is doing his time with his honor intact. And he still knew his God. He released her from her prison, her hell and he is at peace with that. And if you read the bible you know that Angels, even Jesus and God himself will raise their hands to protect "us" or even send someone to intervene. Great song. Great topic for discussion. For instance, would anyone's negative opinion on this man killing another man change if this woman were a child? Men who act on honor are a rare thing today. Very rare.

Some people have a problem with him shooting the abuser. If you look at the window you see the barrel of the shogun the man was going for. You look at the expression on Hardy’s face immediately after the shot and you can tell he does not take it lightly.

I agree that his character doesn't take it lightly. However, from a legal aspect.. he may not have entered with the intention to kill, but the moment he kicked in the door, he lost any chance of being able to claim self defence. That is why he still ended up in jail. That said, he still chose to trade his freedom for hers and did what he felt in his heart was right. And the abuser deserved it.
I believe the song was inspired by a real situation where a guy found an abused woman then went and beat the guy with a tire iron, but didn't kill him. The guy got something like 20 months for assault. Some people say he was a friend of Hardy's others say he just wrote the song after hearing the story.
