If you take a look at a los angeles version of their performance, it'll tell you that the drums are really the soul of this piece. All complexity comes from the irregularity of the drums.
There is a studio version it's on the album For Long Tomorrow though it doesn't feature 土岐麻子 and there's an MV though I don't remember much about that at all. toe are a post rock sometimes math rock band and post rock tends to veer away from song structure to focus more on tone and feeling or texture than anything else. Though the genre is so big now I'm not sure how well that fits today. toe themselves were also mostly instrumental that changed a little with Hear You, which to me sounds like a Japanese math rock band covering Tony Conrad covering Nue! (and no, I have no better way of explaining it.)
It's nice to get a perspective on a band that's coming from a very different place. I like the band and I like post rock and a lot of the related genres and influences but I tend to put it on when I'm focusing in on something else, its good music to work too, or when I just need to relax. It can be repetitive and single grove oriented in the extreme which over 7 minutes or more can drive people insane. I think toe's first ep is named beautifully to illustrate what they are "songs, ideas we forgot"

EDIT: So I guess he's only heard of post-rock now, where the main concept is have a repetitive idea and build over it with varying things.

I really like this song. I can understand your critic but for me the guitar riff is really like. I really like the drum beat and the emotion in this song. It is interesting to see the comments on this video, it looks like there some people who connect something with this song.

Very chill song. I'm not opposed to less structured songs, that aim for a specific mood, like this one. Ling Tosite Sigure have similar songs like that. Am 3:45 might be a good example. Although they have these energy outbursts in certain parts of the song, which is a bit missing for me here. Not sure if that is the best way to describe it lol.
So a bit too chill for me but I don't dislike it. Don't think I have much desire to listen to it again, though.
While I really appreciate the musicianship shown in this number (loved the drums and electric piano) BUT I have to admit that I found this rather long and just a bit boring.....the vocalist was excellent and I would probably like to hear more from her...maybe you had to be there really get into the mood for a piece like this...sometimes the position of a song in a concert can set the mood for the following song....but just by itself (in this video) this song's mood just did not work with me. I'm not saying this was a bad number...just that it did not strike any cord with me...

Its a good sound, but im not a big fan of songs that are only really 1 part. I would enjoy it live, but its not the kind of thing i would ever put on. Similar to improv jazz, i like it live, not not recorded so much.
No. Don't see the appeal of this, even after a few drinks (I'd probably start hackling the band).
Part of the melody was very similar to Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My". Maybe not plagiarism, but very very similar given the limited chord pattern.
When I was a teenager, playing keys in a rock cover band, we played some classic rock jam thing, and (no joke) a very old man with a cane slowly walked up to us and asked "can you play anything with more than two chords in it?".
I'm that old man now (in spirit, not in chronological age).
