Sailing by Charybdis risked the possibility that the entire ship would be lost to the whirlpool. He made the decision to sacrifice 6 men for the assured passage of the rest of the crew.
To be fair Odysseus had a very unreliable crew. On two separate occasions they damned the voyage home. The first occasion forced to elongate their trip for years due to unraveling the bag of winds given to them pushing them away from home. And the second occasion lead to the deaths of everyone except for Odysseus.
